I usually drag home bits of an old Ford carcass and try to build a hot rod, but this time I bought damn near a whole car. It is a new experience for me and so far, I like it except for whoever did the work thought 1991 was the pinnacle of car building.

Here she is on day 1. Not a bad little car, the chop is OK, stupid wheels, but not bad.

But it gets really uncool in a hurry.

Not only is it a candy assed Chevvie motor, it has some kind of weird alien looking shit on the intake manifold. Plus, you can stuff almost another whole Chevvie motor between the engine and the firewall. That shit has to go.

The history of the little Chevvie motor is unknown, so I scraped off some of the uncoolness and cranked her up.

I chopped up bits of the 90's firewall and made some new stuff that looked a little more Henry. Just tacked for the moment, but you get the idea.

Check out how goddamn big the trans tunnel was.

Fixed the big tranny tunnel, made some new toe boards, now there is plenty of room to put my footses.

Installed the correct wheel/tire combination. Notice how the front wheels are sticking out too much?

Ditched the too wide tube axle for an I beam, modified the front crossmember to get her down a little bit.

No Pontiac motor or shiny black paint for this one. Just a quick project to take to the HAMB Drags.

    See ya, -Abone.

    huge improvement....well done :)

  3. Love it - I think these "salvaged" 80's and 90's builds can be a great way to get a cool car on the road more quickly with a few key changes.

Great thread, scrub the Boyd off that thing. The alien top end will sell, Jeep guys love TPI.

I think we'll see more and more de-street-rod builds. The cars are out there, just covered in graphics, billet, and tweed.

Great approach to making it right. I agree, there are a lot of old "street" rods out there that just need the touch of someone that has their "hot rod" credentials and can get the job done righteously.

  22. Very nice detoxification.

Prewar Fords really don't need much to make 'em cool. Less is more.

  23. So you're rich now and can start with most of a car. Mixed emotions here my friend, I am glad you scored a whole car this time and but sad that I don't get to see another turd get polished. ;)

Well you wouldn't call it a candy ass motor if it was one of mine, well maybe you would. :D

Movin right along, I'll be glad to catch a ride with you @ Joplin. Good one ya my friend.

Simple, tasteful changes make a BIG difference. Has the potential to be a really cool rod now!
    Good save!

A more accurate title would have been, " Making a street rod look more traditional". Many street rods have been built with Halibrand wheels and carburetors. Your hot rod does look way better now.....sort of like the traditional street rods built buy Barry Lobeck way back in the 70's.
