I picked this one up last fall. The car has been sitting around since the early seventies when the owner had a Carson top done by a noted top man up here in Mn.named Mel Dahl.He procedes to build a fixture to hang it in his garage and disasemble part of the car and send the rest out back.Fast forward almost 40 years And decides he better pay bills instead so it came up for sale.Im not a big Carson guy but after I got going on some metal repair and had to start fitting things I had to put the top on.Sure changes the look especially with a correct chop it sure looks more streamline and sleak. So now I just need to find someone who wants to have this become there dream after 40 years.Dan

for those readers in Northern New England, anyone have pics of a '32 Ford Phaeton with a one piece lift off aluminum frame top? Was built in the 80s.

In the early days, Hall Top Shop of Oakland did most of the padded tops in Northern California , I always thought they had a great profile , here are a few examples......

I'd swear this is my friend "One Eye" Jack MacNeill who lives near me. He was a member of the LA Roadsters and upholstered many of the customs and hot rods being built before moving to Hawaii. Deuce Daddy Don was also in the LA Roadsters and was Jack's friend, and he may know for sure.

Yep!---Thats ol' "Hawaiin Eye" Jack McNeil!--Before he & Eli moved to Hawaii, Jack covered my '32 irons with an off white color which went well with an all black roadster. That top lasted for 200,000 miles of line chasin', then I did a upgrade with an all black nylon convertible material in 1996, along with new paint, upholstery, disc brakes, etc.

These are pics of a '48 Ford ,basic work done by Bill Roark. Two pics as it looked when I bought it, two pics as finished. Carson style top was a bit tall in the rear to allow room for rear passengers. Hope Rikster views this .

My friend's Merc that we drove to Oklahoma City in 1958 looks a lot like this famous car.

  18. My father-in-law had one of those wide group pictures from a gypsy bike run he did in '47, my kid scanned it and noticed a car in the background. Made a blow up of that section and found a nice '41 with a Carson type top in the background. 41 ford.jpg

I love these tops. I think someone out there should be making them in fiberglass for 49-51 Mercurys. IMG_4957.jpeg

Gene Winfield more than likely still has the molds. As he started selling fiberglass tops in the late 90`s.

I’ve sent messages. I should try and call. I would like to manufacture those top myself, if I could get a mold. I used to make my own molds for small parts. These two four doors have glass padded tops. That’s what I want. IMG_4847.jpeg IMG_4642.jpeg
