Here's some great footage of Clark Gable's 1935 Duesy driving along. The engine sounds awesome!

Wow! How did I miss that post! Anyway, the reason the car came to my attention is that it's going up for auction this weekend at Pebble Beach.

  9. Carole Lombard bought that for him in '35- the year before, she bought him a Packard , bodied by the same company (I think it's Weyman, but can't rememeber) and with the same paint scheme. I saw them last year at the High Museum in Atlanta, and they are GORGEOUS automobiles!!!

Actually, I think it was Rollston who did all the JNs and then restyled by B&S.

  15. Gable had an SSJ also. Beautiful cars all of them.

Gables is on the right and his buddy Gary Cooper's is the red one on the left.

ok, now I'm more depressed. The era from 29-33 is what I always wished I could have lived....the best cars and the best homes, as far as classy.

yes, i know the title is 1935, but the J came out in 29, and was a bit dated by 35

can you imagine what it was like..

Man, that thing sounds wicked as all get out. If I win the lotto I'm buying one!

  19. Boy, those movie actors must have been as mega rich back then as Gates is now. Imagine owning stuff like that back when most people couldn't even afford food during the depression.

There's a true account of a race set up between Gable's Model J and one of the Marx Bros who owned a Supercharged Mercedes Benz. This was in California on a dry lake I believe? Gable had a hot rod Model T before he was famous.
    Anyone else remember the details?

  21. There is a shot around of the A one he came to Calif in from Ohio with a very hot flathead eight hr as I have read was a car guy before his time.

In a depression? Or during one? Just like today, despite the hard times, I bet Luxo / Exotic car sales are still going strong.

Back to reality... I wonder, re-adjusted for inflation, what those cars cost back in the day compared to say a Caddy or Lincoln in the same years? Gary

Heres Clark with his Jag in which he had a Glen Houser top made. Couldn't find a photo the car with the top but R&C did a article about Glen Houser and there was a picture of Clark with the Jag (with the top).

My mother pulled up next to Clark Gable as he was driving that car in L.A. back around 1940.

He smiled and winked at her and it still gives her chills @ 92.

Model J. The Mercedes got out to a lead but eventually slowed and was passed by the Duesenberg. The MB has a on demand supercharger and the theory is that in the haste to get out a big lead it was over used and screwed up the fuel pressure.
