IMG_1321.JPG Gotta love it when guys are honest. When I bought the engine and trans for my truck years ago the old guy said it was freshly rebuilt. I took him at his word because I got it cheap and didn't care either way. Pulled the side covers today and found the paint pen marks from setting the valvelash and what appear to be new oversized valve springs! Score. I wonder what other goodies it holds?

Cutting and grinding header flanges today. 1/2" thick! To match the intake thickness of course. IMG_1457.JPG

  4. Did you find any other Belond pictures?

No not much. Nothing for a six cylinder other than Chevy 235 headers which only have four ports.

I think I have a plan for what I am building. But am still torn on what to do after the header. It is a toss up between 1 3/4" dual or single 2.5" torque tube style.

Didn't wanna butcher my rather nice 34 throttle pedal to mate up to the Plymouth dual carb set up. So I used some junk I had laying around. A 34 tailgate hinge, a cheap Chinese 5/16 socket and a bent 40's something truck pedal. Pedal still needs a little grinding for shape.

Scabricating at its finest. Thanks @Runnin shine for that one!

Hey Matt, just spotted this build thread and sat through all 17 pages. I really like the stance, lots of good work , I'll tell Tony what your up to, he's got his six back on the road with a 4bbl and dual exhaust. Also I love those air cleaner tops. I'll be watching the rest of this.I'll try make it over to see you on one of my next trips to the isle.

  12. Hi Matt, in keeping with the cheapass vibe, I have some 2.5" stainless straights and bends if it helps.

Thank! But I have enough 2.5" as it is. I would love to go dual 2", but we shall see.

Maybe I can go steal some pool ladder handles or something. Lol

IMG_1348.JPG Fooling with my 54 Plymouth head today. I need to change out the head studs for the special bolts with provions for the throttle linkage to bolt to. A rare 54 "Eater" head.

The 54 is 100hp and has the updated combustion chamber shape and is 85cc's as I recall. I am getting it decked .060 in a couple of weeks then will get to work with some more chamber mods and I am grinding all of the markings off the top and smoothing the surface in prep for paint as well.

I would like to see a picture of the combustion chambers on that head to compare with the one on my '34 Dodge.

I posted a picture in a thread about the fact that the earlier heads are the same cc's I will see if I can link it.

    Plymouth flatty fact!

Hope this works. The early flathead plymouths had the common flathead dodge, ford heart combustion chamber shape. The 54 is smaller around the exhaust valve, has more transfer area and small "shelf" areas over the valves.

This head design is very similar to the best of the Harley flatheads and even similar to the Navarro and the Briggs dragster heads produced today. They are rough cast and could use some polishing and refinement but still way better than the early heads. Probably why these little engines made over 100 horsepower with the worlds worst exhaust system and only 230 inches.

My '34 Dodge is the shorter stroke 218. First year for the 218/230 design and parts interchange down through the years. Just curious if I should look for a later head or stay with what I have and just clean it up.

A 34 head would be a large chamber head like the 35 head I measured at 88cc's. A

The later sixes had a lot of improvements. Oil pump, head etc.

That's what I thought. I'll have to find a late model head like something from the '50s. Either that or mill it down a bit more. ;)

Fitting header tubes today. A lot of fiddling around. But the result should look ok. I also mocked up my exhaust. 2.5" single exiting just in front should be nice and loud!

I am going to weld the two pipes together then blend the lower tubes into that with a small triangular shaped piece. Older style.
