We've got a '58 Chevy Viking 1 1/2 Ton 6 cylinder, is it a 292? Were debating on swapping it into a 70's Hercules Log Skidder if it is.

Is there any flaws or weaknesses to look out for in these 6's?

DEFINATELY KILLER STUFF FELLAS!!!! i'm way excited that i'm not the only one wanting to dump all of my money into a sixer... lol
they just have that cool factor when done right!!! nice work guys!!!

my I6 223 is far from that... but i've been gearing up for the rebuild/hopup on it for a while now. there's a thread in the Inline motors group that explains a lot of stuff about it...

  4. WOW!!!!! I'm currently deployed to Iraq for my 5th time, and I'm having my 250 rebuild. It's good to see that I'm not the only one. I just want a 6 cyl. hop'D up like I would have if I was 18 and growing up in a great time the 50's.
My C.C. buddies say, "get a V8." I just tell them I will when I retire.

LONELY KNIGHTS C.C. Colorado Springs. BABY.......

What you have is probably a Chevy 261" six; its a nice stout engine, but not quite up to the '63 and later 292" or the '50's GMC 270" and 302" sixes. The 261 can be built up very nicely, and is a favorite, but somewhat rare replacement engine for rodding Chevy coupes, sedans and 1/2 ton pickups.

Look for a cast # on the driver's side of the head, above the #2-3 cylinder area, if it ends in ---850, that most likely is what you have.

    Later, Kinky6

I've said this before, so, I'll say it again; you're all a bunch of SIX MANIACS and REGISTERED SIX OFFENDERS!!!!! Now, that being said, I too built a 250 Chevy six once, stock block with a cam change, the small chamber 194 head milled .060, a flat tappet .510 lift cam (forget the duration) (this was way before factory roller cams), Clifford intake and headers, Holley 2 barrel carb, Judson ignition, with a BW 4-speed behind it. It was in my 74 Nova "fleet car". The thing would fly, and surprise just about everyone. Cliffords 6=8 slogan really is true. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Alright, about how much horsepower/torque did this motors put out? The skidder probably needs about 80 or so to function right. I figure with a 2-bbl and a split manifold that it wouldn't have a problem right?

You just got to love an inline six.

Since we got ours running it has been to many events and run a bunch of miles on the street.

It got photographed in a studio for a magazine feature...... Drag raced........ Shown it....... Got down and dirty on a race track...... and just plain had FUN...........

Now sitting in the shed waiting for summer to come around again.

How did you find tuning the webbers? Hear both sides on the net like "very hard to get right" or "the easiest carb I have ever tuned" how do they work out for you?

Great thread keep it going. Just got a Chevy 250, Can you say free......split exhaust and two singles, other then that I don't know anything about it. The previous owner wanted it out for a Chevy V-8, Now it's mine, can't wait to dig into it.

    Here's my favourite inline 6. She's only little, 2500cc or 155 ci.

You blokes would know them from Triumph TR6's in the US, we got them here in sedans as well, the early ones, 69-73 had the Lucas mechanical fuel injection that's shown on this pic.

And what's she sound like? At about 6500 rpm she's buzzing like an angry bee, and a good, well modified-for-street one will make around 175 hp.

    Cheers, Glen.
