History Auto racing 1894-1942

I believe the thinking at that time had the king pin line centered on the center spot of the tire were in met the pavement. Must be something to it, Bugatti clained to win 2,000 races with their GP cars. Bob

 

This is Roy La Plante at the Canadian National Exhibition in 1920 and his Wisconsin Special. There is a good possibility this may be either the Fiat Cyclone or one of the other early small Fiat racing cars after it was rebuilt.
Does anyone know anything more about this car or Roy La Plante? See enlargements of this photo and comparisons with the Cyclone on The Old Motor.

Not to drag this thread too far off topic; I too have noticed the odd camber angle of many per 1930's land speed record cars. I had thought it might have been a photo issue but I've seen many different pictures with these settings.
Thoughts?

 

Thanks for posting this - I bought the photo below at a flea-market just because it was such an interesting looking race car and I have been trying to work out what it was.

The wierd thing is that it looks like it was taken at pretty much the same time and place as the one you posted!

1931 Bugatti Type 51 Dubos Coupé

 

^^^^^Kurtis, Is this the maroon coupe that is now in the Nethercutt Collection? If so it has had a fantastic restoration, saw it last June. Bob

 

This is Macoco Alzaga Unzue again, this time next to the driver. Buenos Aires no doubt. We belive this picture is of the car just arrived from USA. We also suspect this Hudson was specially built in USA.

Yes Bob!! It was eventually reunited with its original Grand Prix chassis.

I liked it better when it was black although I suspect it would be an oven in the cockpit on a warm sunny day.

I like the petcock on the pump - probably there to keep tank pressure from leaking back by the primitive pump seal?

What does the round knob in the cockpit do?

Frank Brisko in his Miller '91' chassis (presumably ex-Sampson) with a Miller Marine engine (presumably a 220 CID "Brisko Big Block") at what looks like Langhorne Speedway. #36 and Elgin Piston Pin sponsorship in a "Boyle" triangle should mean 1934, possibly '33, but I don't have any info on Brisko at Langhorne for either year


EDIT: CORRECTION, that's not Langhorne. Could be Milwaukee, where Frank was entered August 26 and 30 during the State Fair, but didn't figure in the results.

 

I wonder if it might be a 122 chassis instead of a 91 do to the location of the steering output shaft it also looks to have been turned into a 3 springer by this point. That is if it is a Miller at all, but sure fits the profile I think. What sanctioning body would that have been?

 

No, it's clearly a '91' - I can tell, trust me! Not sure about the rear suspension, I don't see any radius rods, and no spring hangers either. Later, the car was fitted with a Hisso engine, and did have radius rods. AAA event, no doubt.

 

And the original 91 engine was pulled by Sampson for his 16 cylinder ---
