I want to get involved. has there been any rule changes or additions? What is the venue and schedule? pictures of chassis and engine/trans combo would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Todd
Rules've been pretty well settled for awhile now, but you will need to pick one of the three class variations. HA/GR, SDRA, or NWVD. Here're some quick comparisons, but check out their rules links for the rest of it. HA/GR rules here. Original concept. Main differences; no 4 bbl carbs, no slush pumps, no slicks, no radials, limited engine choices. For folks who want to enjoy building and racing in the ways the early post-war boys did it. Dirt floor garage not required, but a bonus. SDRA rules here. First variation. Main differences; newer engine choices, slush pumps allowed, more modern carbs, radials. For HAMBster lovers who want to go faster, and don't mind more modern equipment & practices to do it. NWVD rules here. Second variation. Main differences; SDRA rules plus slicks. For SDRA minded folks who just plain gotta have'em some slicks. Venues presently are mostly "ad-ins" into other existing classes, usually brackets. It's typically easier to get in at actual nostalgia meets locally. Once you manage to get a few cars to show up at a given strip regularly, they'll be more amenable to considering a dedicated class of some structure you & they can agree on. So, as the Aussies did, perhaps you can get a few builds going together, and show up as a group right off. It may take awhile for it to catch on where you are, as most folks aren't too ballsy about breaking new ground. Most of'em only want to slide into something someone else has already established. My car was the first on the left coast (in '07, and I didn't get to actually race it 'til '08), and we just had our first 9 car meet late last year. And that was at a small "true-stalgia" meet put on at an old Army Air Corp base strip by a very dedicated man & group up in MidCal. But it's been eminently worth it. Yeah, we had to run in bracket classes for the first couple years (and still do, but now just because it's fun), but that's what it took to get here.
The 'Brick's a bit off the beaten path for HA/GR these days, as I now run a tub body, but here's the basic layout anyway. You can hit'er sig link below for more of'er on Flick'r (and there's a shot of the 9 of us in there as well). Once there you can also punch up "albums" for "Barn Job #18" and "Flyin' Brick" (the predecessors to the "Flyin' Brick II") for'er complete history if you like.
