  4. Just got this in the mail.

  5. Please note the following news release was pilfered from a radio site;
But, it applies to aluminum manifold, heads and any other parts not made from steel.........

Termite Mutation Threatens Aircraft and Ham Antennas:

Ham Radio BEWARE of aluminum antenna failures!

The revelation (below) about 'Animites' has now been linked to numerous Ham Radio aluminum antenna failures. High winds and weather related element loading can cause antenna failures. Only mitigation known is to annually apply anti-Animite mitigation coatings that will preserve your aluminum antennas. Elements have been known to break off elevated antennas becoming fatal to ground persons and radio communications.

    "Termite Mutation Threatens Aircraft"
Recently-Declassified Documents Reveal The Existence Of Aluminum-Eating Termites:

Recently-declassified government documents and photos reveal the rumors of aluminum eating termites (aka almites) are true. The aluminum termite is a mutation of a common termite seen all around the world. Bacteria in the digestive tract of the almite live off of aluminum oxides and secrete enzymes and nutrients essential to the almites survival.

Almites were first discovered in the 1920's as aircraft manufacturers were changing from the venerable 4130 chromoly tubing to the 20 series aluminum. Quick to discover the problem, scientists at the NACA and industry quickly developed coated aluminum (Alclad) that was resistant to almite attack. The development of alclad would prove essential to the Allied success in WWII.

During WW II, Germany was working on a Large Strategic Bomber (LSB) similar in size to the B-29. British commandos, working with the French Resistance, were able to places amites in the tails of the two LSB prototypes. The resulting unexplained crashes caused Hitler to kill the program (along with the company's chief engineer). Almites were also placed on several HE-111's, to devastatingly good effect.

In the US, fears that the almites would mutate further and attack alclad caused the military to consider the development of a large transport to be made completely out of wood. Contrary to popular belief, the Spruce Goose was not built because of a lack of aluminum, but because of the fear of contaminated aluminum. Only Howard Hughes and a small number of chief engineers were fully aware of the REAL reason behind the HK-1 project.

Almites appear to have a sinister side in industrial espionage. Some of the US servicemen that worked with the British were rumored to be working for Boeing at the time that the two early Comets crashed. Rather than admit to the existence of the almites, the British agreed to drop the issue in exchange for US propulsion technologies.

In practice almites are easily taken care of. The feared mutation of alclad-almites has never happened, and in fact, there is DNA evidence that it never will. While almites can provide a source of common corrosion, it is typically found during the required annual inspection. On the rare occasion that almites are discovered, they are dismissed as harmless bugs. The FAA is reportedly about to publish an INFO to address the issue.

That is pretty! One day I will get a Thomas and have it polished, if only just to look at it. How does the Thomas compare to the Lion head 3 in performance?

I am reassembling my A cabriolet after painting and, yesterday, I fired up the banger after not running since November. It feels good to have it running again! Just have to wait until full assembly to get it on the road again.

I had heard that it wasn't the bugs eating the Alloy but rather acid produced in the bugs shit that actually caused the oxidation. Ever more so in items made of Magnesium

  11. Interesting about bug shit, who knew.
I want to thank Cyclone Kevin and Jerseyboy for their replies to my question about widening wheels. Called Collins and they said yes they do it.

You shouldn't miss the fun of driving it, so don't ship it. I'm planning on driving it to LARS in June. I can leave it with you then....looking like you are in California anyway.

  21. Don't stop me here.
I want the government to mandate that I get a 42% raise in 4 years.

  22. Well... Got the carbs finished, Put a low pressure carter fuel pump and Malpassi Filter King (Filter/Fuel Pressure Regulator) on, re-routed the fuel lines. That MSD Link for the old Mallory parts does work. I did get the dizzy cap from them. The old setup was a Holley red pump and regulator. The only thing I changed on the carb rebuild was ditching the adjustable jets and installed the stock 0.48 size jets. It now starts and idles fine as it did before. But it still falls on it's face under load. It acts like it's running out of fuel. Just dies off at the top end of 2nd gear and nothing in 3rd. Takes a while to get it started after that. When in Neutral looking down the carbs, fuel is spitting out of the emmulsion tubes. I know this is bordering on Stromberg troubleshooting/advice. Should I jet these things down? If so, how far? AM I chasing my tail and looking at the wrong thing? Could my problem be timing related? Anyway here are A couple of pics of it all together now, taken before the fuel line rerouting and new cap (painted black) KIMG0222.jpg KIMG0217.jpg

Clogged up interstate 5 this morning. Car ran great at 55-60. Of course everyone wants to do 90. Had an impatient trucker pass me as I was doing a solid 60. Hwy patrol gave me a thumbs up as he pulled the trucker over

  26. Can't find any markings at all on the head. I am just going by a list scribbled by the previous owner's Uncle who put it together initially with mods/parts installed. On the crossmember and water pump, I'll get to those sooner or later. They are a bit of an eyesore now.

  27.
  28. Might be the power valves. I once sent a pair of 81's to a top rebuilder and they came back with power valves cross threaded. They wouldn't seat and were dumping fuel. I made up a bushing to hold tap in perfect alignment and rechased the threads then I made a bushing with a couple thou clearance to guide the valves straight so they would seal. The design of these carburetors is such that with in certain limits they will feed the amount of gas required for the amount of air flowing through the venturies Usually very slight jet changes are needed to tune particular engines.
