A Surprise H.A.M.B. Upgrade

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ryan, Mar 25, 2009.

  1. Our Corporate IT dept. really doesn't have any issue with "social networking" sites (though HR and managment probably do) ... but rather the embedded multi-media (Photobucket, flickr, YouTube, etc.) that is so prevelent in Blogs, message boards and on-line forums today ... including the H.A.M.B.

I think their real concern is all the hundreds of employees that are listening to streaming audio or watching streaming video on their desktops and eating up bandwidth.

I know that at my office, sites like myspace & facebook (and in my case, the H.A.M.B.) are typically left running on many of our employee's desktop ... and defintetly contribute to degraded performance / congestion on our network.

THANKS RYAN!! I created a social group just for the Hemi Tech stuff. I think that will work out. Being able to edit the index helped me pull all the posts and organize them.

These new features are a very good addition to the HAMB!

  5. Ryan ... How 'bout adding a "Find all Social Group posts by {HAMB username}" and a "Find all Social Group Discussions started by {HAMB username}" function? ... the Search Discussions feature doesn't appear to allow searches for HAMB usernames.

    Ryan,
It may have been a bug but man I sure liked the red text, it popped what you had read and if you were looking for a post you read earlier to comment or just keep up, it made it very easy to locate since threads can get buried 5 paged deep in a matter of minutes.

    Please re-bug it LOL

I'm not a big computer guy so forgive me if this is a dumb question... Will we be able to still see all posts on the regular HAMB? Looking at the new social groups, it appears you cannot see it unless you are a member... I'm confused... At present I'm not a member of any social group. Does that mean I won't be able to see anything posted on a social group thread?

It's up to the admin of that group, I left mine open so anyone can read it.

Don't sweat it man... If you have no interest in the social groups or don't get them, you don't have to deal with them. They are designed to get the hell out of the way if they aren't your thing.

The H.A.M.B. hasn't changed and will remain as is.

Working on this... Right now, you can go to a user's profile page and see all of the groups they belong to... I will make searching more powerful - promise.

I'm not sure how it could have done this... Before I fixed it, the read text was links to stuff you have already seen. All other links were black.

As it is now, links to stuff you haven't read are black and bold. Stuff you have read are black and not bold.

    Did I screw something up?

Point in fact, I'v started a social group for diesel engines in hot rods... It's a seroius topic and a lot of people are interested in it, but if it was placed on the HAMB, it would turn into a flame fest real fast.

As a social group, only those people who are interested in this particular topic can discuss it, and the "haters" wont give us crap... Win-win!!!

We got 100% faith in 'ya Boss!

I would very much like to see the ability to add video's to discussions within social groups added.

Nah, thats how it looks, read is unbolded. I just happened to like the threads that you read turned red...LOL get it? It was apparantly a bug? Bummer, it made it really easy to keep up on the threads you were reading without subscribing.

    Thanks,

    Scot

Is there a setting I'm missing in the prefs that emails you or sends a daily digest email for groups activity?

I mentioned this in the Q&A section after the last upgrade and hoped it would return with this upgrade. The "view all" feature is still missing once you're inside the thread. It's a very handy feature that seems to be unique to this forum. Anyway of getting that back?

Sure, blame it on them! Don't you get into enough trouble on your own?! :D

Ryan, you stated that in the social group it will be like the normal hamb (last page being the latest stuff). I think there are a number of us who would not mind having page 1 being the latest and the top of the page being the newest post. at least in the NW social group it worked very well for us. since it was a one stop place to check in an chat about the NW it worked perfect. maybe now that there can be a number of NW post (a mini version of the main board) it is not possible for that to work. I guess it will depend on if we leave all the discuss to one folder or do multiple topics...
