My first car was a '54 Chevy with a later 235. Had dual 1s, split manifolds and sounded like a B-52. Loved that sound. Flathead is a close second.

There's really no contest here. Do I actually have to say it? Hint: Avatar.

Although the sweet sound of the V12 in a P-51 gives me goosebumps.

A good running engine does sound sweet whether a single cylinder hit and miss or V16 Rolls Royce or anything between but one that comes to mind and has its own distinctive sound is a hopped up Studebaker V8
I can recognize the sound a block away

I ran my 55 chevy six banger for years with split manifold and straight pipes loved the sound. my 51 merc flatty runs porters it sounds real nice also. I have them running all the way to the bumper but have cutouts in front of them and the pipes come out just in back of the rear wheels. just like to hear it bark once in awhile.

When I went to get the exhaust put on my coupe, the old guy told me I didn't need mufflers if the pipes were bent and snaked a certain way...he was right. My 1965 327 was bored .030...9.5:1 CR... 1965 double hump heads with screw in studs, guide plates...Comp Cams 276* hydraulic roller cam with real roller rockers...vintage Edelbrock C4B intake with 650 Holley/electric choke...stock dizzy with Pertronics innards...Speedway rams horn manifolds...2.25" pipes...no mufflers. I was surprised at how quiet it was...and it consistently got 18mpg/hiway.

***EDIT** I added some engine build specs for the inquirin' minds.

I run around the cornfields on 2 lane black top hedders, completely welded 2.5 straight pipes. when I was a grown up I ran mufflers but not any more. I have a lot of friends who love the sound, but are unable to go straight they just come over, we get the old farm truck out and they can not get enough of loud. I feel very lucky to live long enough to go back 50 years and be a kid again. Don in Indiana

That youtube clip was taken by a buddy as I was moving the coupe for Kevin Lee for the R&C photo shoot.

On the conservative side, mild 1950's-early '60s 283's with legal exhaust systems and Duntov 097 cam...
That gave a mild lope and a quiet, understated clatter from properly adjusted solids...

  24. My pleasure? ... I guess I would have to say a 392ci Chrysler HEMI V8 ... with weed burner zoomies :D:

  25. It's amazing to me how you can get different sounds from the same engine. My 200 had a single exhaust that went from 2" to 2 1/4" straight back through a hush power. It sounded like a pissed off hornet! When I redid the car I had Ed Hanson put bell flowers on it. They kept the hush power, but ran smaller diameter pipe, and split the exhaust so each bellflower is functional. Now it is deeper, quieter, and not buzzy at all.

  26. being an old timer, nothing sounds sweeter than a Chevy 6 with dual exhaust. it has a sound all it's own.

I'd say it's a toss up between a supercharged Lycoming or a Flathead.

I had a set of powerstick/turbo tube mufflers on a F100. What a head turner that thing was. It was LOUD.
