Hi All, Time to start a build thread for my 32 5 window. Here's a link to my introduction thread in the new comers section. Covers the frame build up. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=845437 I just got the Newage Motorsports body about 2 weeks ago. It looks great, a real quality job by Chris and Ed. Chris bolts the body on my frame at the Newage shop.
Rear tires are just some old drag radials I had laying around. Actual tires will be much taller and should fill up the rear fenders pretty well.
Some inside shots showing the inner body framing and wood. Strong and well done. Seat is from a 2000 Dodge Caravan.
NICE! That's the body I was considering before finding a metal one. I love the rear fenders, just dont paint it yellow.
Next step is the drive train, as soon as the dust settles on my checking account! Was going to be a 69 350CI, but that engine had a hole in number 8 so looks like a crate 350CI for now.
New Tires! BF Goodrich/Coker 285/70/15 Silvertowns. Moved diff forward 1 1/2" to center wheel in wheel well. Still needs some tweaking when I get some weight in it.
Speedway windshield wiper motor installed. Still need to trim shaft and install passenger side wiper, which is required in NY. Also Vintique radiator support rods are installed.
Speedway seat sliders and Speedway universal seat bracket mocked up on 2000 Dodge Caravan middle seat. Still need to trim bracket a bit.
I really like the fact that the New Age guys have kept the cowl vent and the firewall has some semblance to the original. Your going to have a cool looking car. HRP
On your one side shot, it looks like the rear could go back a bit. You said you moved it forward to center in wheel well, but maybe too much? I like where you're going with this build.
New Age does great work. I think they currently have the best glass body on the market. I am curious as to why you did not buy their frame as well?
Very nice project. I will be watching the build. The body sure has a lot of strong reinforcement tubing installed. I have a friend with one of their bodies and he loves it.
I am also in the process of building a New Age Motorsports 5 window. I am very happy with the quality of the body. One thing I would do is to let the fiberglass completely cure before painting. My body was very flat when I first got it and after putting it outside in the sun on warm days the body did shrink and settle some and some air pockets/pinholes showed up in the fiberglass. There were some larger air pockets between the gel coat and fiberglass in nooks and crannies that I had to address. Look at it very close. Most of the issues were corrected with block sanding the gell coat and primer , where others had to be filled. I guess its the nature of the beast, it is a handlaid product that is bound to have some issues. Once the fiberglass stink is out of it, its fully cured. Put it out in the sun as much as possible. Dont rush it and you will end up with a better finished product. Good luck with the build. Bill
Funny you should mention curing the body, as just last night I was reading up on fiberglass prep. Thank you for the info. Curious how long you had your body before you primed and painted?
I remember ridding around in a unfinished glass 39 Ford convertible still in jel coat during the summer,,the fumes from it curing were strong not to mention the expanding & contraction,,definitely let it sit in the sun. HRP
