Has anybody replaced a Merc-o-matic with a C4 or C5 in a 1951, 1952, or 1953 Mercury behind a Flathead? I'm considering doing this in the future. I've got the Mercomatic column, and I'm curious if there are any obstacles that may present themselves while replacing the transmission. I'm aware of the Speedway conversion kit or Flatomatic conversion kit needed. I wouldn't need to replace the column, would I? Are the column to trans linkages fairly easy to modify or create? If you've used of those kits, would you share your opinion of how well it worked? http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Flathead-V8-to-Ford-C4-Auto-Transmission-Conversion-Kit,8947.html http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Flathead-V8-to-Ford-C4-Transmission-Basic-Adapter-Kit,11051.html http://www.flat-o.com/carproducts/flatomatic.htm Thank you in advance, Gentlemen. .
I've heard of several guys that used the Flat-O adapter for Fords and Mercs. I don't know what the rear mount difference would require but the linkage could be modified to fit I'm certain. A person might be able to use a C4 type yoke on the OEM driveshaft but it may have to be modified for length.
I have been using Flat-O products for 10+ years and Gene at Flat-O is one company you will not swear at but swear to great company and great service. Been running a C4 in the 36 with a chev column and home made linkage simple enough to do with some fabrication skills....... make some bell cranks and wa la your are off.......
