Tech fitting a SBC distributer in a Hemi

    This is how i modified and fitted an old mallory duel point distributer into a Desoto Hemi.
    I was lucky enough to borrow a Hemi distributer of a friend of mine to get the correct dimensions.
    I first stripped down the old mallory unit and roughly cut it to length.

    i then put it up in the lathe and faced it off to length and turned the diameter down to 25mm (1").

    Next job was to make up the ally adapter, this was turned up in the lathe.
    i have done a drawing if anyone else needs to get the sizes.

    the next job was to press the adapter onto the modified distributer body, I also used some bearing fit so it wont move once pressed on.

    I also pressed out the old brass bush from the cut off piece of the old distributer and pressed it back into the shortened body.
    here are the two side by side.

    thats the body sorted and finished, next job is to modify the drive shaft.
    First cut to length.

    you will then need to machine the flats on the end of the drive shaft.
    its important that this is not off center. I do not have a mill to do this job, so I clamped the drive shaft into the tool post of the lathe and milled the flats.

    now fit the shaft back into the body fit and pin a collor to stop it comming out.
    here it is fitted in the block.

    my next plan is to fit a petronix unit into the distributer.

    Good thinking on that lathe-milling op! I made an Olds HEI into a front-mounted '48 flathead distributor...(used a VW single-pinned offset drive: fit flathead cam poifect!)

    Nicely done - one suggestion - put the groove in it for an O-ring like later Mopar distributors - less likely to leak and you don't have to worry about the gasket.
