Don't bother, find a hobby worth the wasted time.

If this means what it seems to mean (and I can't read any other meaning into it), you just put a serious dent in my respect for you; not that that matters to you, I'm sure. ANY hobby, almost by definition, is "wasted time."

Waste your time with friends and family, not by your self.
Learned that the hard way, my best mate of many years died just the other day when I was too busy playing with models to help him.

Sorry for your loss Doc. Sounds like it couldnt be helped. Its cold and wet here in Slower Delaware. My old bones dont want to be out side. so my early Saturday and Sunday mornings while the wife gets her extra rest are spent in my toy room cursing the mess I make of models. Ha ha , keeps me off the street. I still love doing it. Lost most of my skills that I never had. Trying to relearn...Kev.

I have a question on model glue. Is there a different kind of super glue for the plastic models, I have been trying to use super glue and it will not hold the parts together?

Sorry for your loss Doc.
A personal word about hobbies. I was raised with an alcoholic family. I had the 3 alcoholic step fathers who would constantly verbally abuse me and sometimes, hit me. I found model building as a kid to escape the hell, it was my salvation...otherwise, I contemplated about suicide at a young age. I might not be here today.
If you take great satisfaction in your hobby, it's not a waste of time.

they make "super" glue for models you can find it at most any good hobby shop i just use good old testers orange and white tube if your trying to glue plated parts together the plating has to be scraped off for the glue to stick goes for painted parts also

I have never considered any hobby a waste of time.
We need a diversion from the complexities of everyday life, jobs, and stress.
We need to express our individual creativity and hobbies afford that outlet.
Death is a fact of life, and it does sadden us when someone we know and love passes.
it is saddens us that we may think we did not do enough or spend enough time with the one who passes from this life.
This, too, is a fact of life. We go about our days living as if we have plenty of time and develop the attitude that tomorrow we will visit others.
The time slips away and we do not take those opportunities we may have.
Sometimes we get other chances and the poster who asked for help is one.
Doc's skill and experiences would afford him the opportunity to make a new friend, if it is just over the internet. Who knows where that could lead?

I know what you mean paintcan......I stopped using superglue.....it ruins your glasswork and fogs it up.....ask me how I know. Finally went to a hobby shop and got the regular model glue. Works for me.....

Anybody have windshield and back glass for a 67 Nova hardtop? Need it to finish my Nova. DOH!

Maybe others have something better? Kev.

there's a subforum here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/g...hp?groupid=105 it's not that active but there's some good builders and most guys will try to help you along.

one thing which is helpful, and that's to ask a specific question. most guys who ask general questions get no responses, or ones which aren't all that inviting.

a gazillion internet forums, but here's some of my favorites:

http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/

http://trakinscale.proboards.com/index.cgi

http://z8.invisionfree.com/Scale_Rac...ex.php?act=idx

http://vintagedragmodelsinc.proboard...i?action=login

http://drasticplastics.proboards.com/index.cgi?

http://cs.scaleautomag.com/f/

http://www.scalemotorcars.com/

http://www.largescalemodeler.com/newforum/index.php

http://therustbucketbrigade.proboards.com/index.cgi

http://plasticaddictsanon.proboards.com/index.cgi

http://custommodelhotrods.proboards.com/index.cgi

don't be put off if a site isn't devoted to the scale or type of car you like the most. knowledge is cumulative and can be gleaned from anywhere. to post, sometimes even see pictures, you have to join, but that's fairly painless.

you'll figure out the sites you like the best in short order!

Sorry guys, I'm a little mad at the world right now.
He died by his own hand, after serving with him over 18 years in our Army and 4 deployments I was not there for him.
Please don't hold it against me.

Doc.

Make that mad at myself.

some reference sites & aftermarket parts here:

http://www.thedpmcc.com/instructionsintro.html

http://www.themodelcarmuseum.org/index.html

http://www.socalcarculture.com/modelcarlinks.html

again, if you have need for something specific, it makes a much easier job for the folks to help.

Thanks everybody for the quick replys, I just got back into the model building thing after about 40 years. Man has my skills gotten rusty over the years.

Back to the glue thing thanks again, I will try a small Hobby Shop for what I need, the large ones I been to seems like they realy don't have time for questions, if your not spending a lot of money.

Scrambler1,
You will want to try the Testors "Clear parts cement".
Highly recommended for windows. Will not fog or ruin your windows. It goes on white and dries clear.Try a practice piece with it first, you'll love it.

Hey Doc, your statement did not seem like you at all. Thanks for your explanation and really sorry for your loss. Don't beat yourself up.

Great bunch of work here again this week folks, you have some talent.

[QUOTE=halfasskustoms;8692422]Lookin great guys....Heres a 1/87 scale 32 Im almost done with. Its made after Paul Sr 32 that Jesse James made for him on his TV show. I only changed 2 things. 1st the motor. Wanted a flathead in it. And the front wheels, wanted WW on both sides oh the tire. Heres the 1.1

I really like your build up, but FYI, this is not a '32.

Doc, I'm very sorry for the tragic loss of your friend. I can only imagine what you must be feeling. I did have a friend from our model club take his own life several years ago. He was an extremely reserved and private person and while we spent a fair amount of time together, I feel I never really knew him. When he died, much too young, it was a complete shock, and I'm not the only one left with the feeling that if somehow we could've cut through the wall he'd built around himself, we might have prevented it. Even his family had virtually no clue. He left no messages, and all we're left with is a mystery and the memories.

But I do try to not take my friends for granted anymore. And it's the friends with whom I share the hobby that make it worthwhile. The kits I have and the models I build are, in the end, just "stuff."

Some great stuff this week, guys. Pscott, I love the T roadster and, ClearSpot, I'm envious of your opportunity to build that rare Johan kit! OldSprinter, your 1/8 scale car are always amazing.

I feel lucky that I've got something to contribute this week! Finished my build of this previously unmolested original issue SMP '59 Corvette 3-in-1 Customizing kit as a sort-of tribute to the first version of the '58 the late great Larry Watson painted for Lavonne Bathke. Though I didn't have the nerve to attempt the candy red and gold flames that Larry did in the coves!

Man,I couldn't agree more! The owner of the kit and car pictured said he'd rather see it built on the shelf.Cannot argue with that...It was a gift to him from his wife.

Doc.
At 50 years of age, I can say this much, model cars are how most anyone I know learned of cars. Long before the internet and video games were ever thought of, I spent my time building model cars. At a very young age, I learned where the parts of the car go, that reading the instructions is a big help. I learned that once you've seen how stuff fits, you can vary things to fit your tastes and needs. I learned how to chop tops on '49 Mercs, build funny car chassis that sit on all four wheels on a flat surface. I can now sand, paint and buff to perfection as well as make doors fit. I know the difference between a '64 and a '66 Corvette as well as how a 1960's Logghe funny car chassis is built. All of this I learned from "wasting" my time with model cars. I also wasted my youth drawing cars when I didn't have money to build models, which helped me visualize things before I actually build them, oddly enough that helps me in my current time-wasting job as a CNC machinist/programmer. I think my ability to build everything and I mean EVERYTHING on my current cars is due to my youth "wasted" building models.
