Hot Rods What color of black is best

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ol' Blue, Jan 24, 2013.

  1. I have been building my model A coupe for the last couple of years and I am finally ready for paint. I want to paint it black but there is boring black and there is wow black. If you have seen any really wow black colors on vehicles could you recommend them to me. My buddy has a new black GMC pickup and it looks really nice but maybe there are other ones.

    There is only one black.

  3. Not anymore and hasn't been for awhile.

When I did my '57 Buick I found that Sherwin-Williams had the deepest, purest black and I checked all including some high end brands.

    Non traditional?
I like Honda code B92P. Black with just a minute bit of blue pearl that only shows up it the brightest light, give hint of a blue sheen, like crow feathers.

  7. i think rim-job black is the best

  8. Go to the paint store and get a hand full of color chips,,pick out a black,,paint the car and when ask what color it is you can proudly announce.."It's Black" :D HRP

Any paint that has something other than black in it, is not black.

  10. Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. Larry T. , when you say 99L are you referring to the old Centauri black. I used that on the frame on my '40 and loved it. We can't get it anymore in Canada with the new paint rules. Paints have changed so much in the last few years, maybe there is even a better one out there.

Ford has the deepest black.. I believe code is UA. Or you could just buy a gallon of PPG 1683 toner. It's straight black.

    Hey,

Whata 'bout the original black used by & spelled out for Briggs & Murray to use by The Ford?

This is a true carbon black, not the wussy-blueish chemi crap used on late model yuppy rubbishmobiles:D

    Ford black is UA
    Chevy black is WA8555

IIRC, Dodge black is a straight black.

R-M or Sherwin-Williams seem to have the blackest black. If you put clear over it, add a few drops of black to the clear to give it the depth that you want, without looking foggy. DO NOT use cheap clear.

There is only one color black. The color black can have millions of shades and tints. Pick one.

I had a truck painted black a few years ago, the painter used spies hecker paint.
he asked me what tone of black, there was blue, green, red.
I picked blue-black , it was black in every sense of the word, just a little blue in the reflection, it was a lot better than a friend of mines black Lincoln it came out with a gray reflection. it looked good until it was sitting next to my truck.
It was also the toughest paint I have seen, it kept its shine until I sold it years later

Yes and no. The 99 was Dupont's paint code for the black. The L was the code for acrylic lacquer and Centari was the acrylic enamel (maybe code A, but it's been too long ago to say for sure).

And as far as all blacks being the same and "true" blacks, all the codes had mixing formulas and none of them that I remember (I mixed paint for the Dupont dealer) were just the mixing colors.

I think we can still get Centari here, but none of the painters want to shoot it anymore. They all wanna use BC/CC systems.
