Default Complete HO Scale Replica of Lions Drag Strip!

We think this is pretty awesome. Rick Voegelin (former editor of Car Craft, author of the book Engine Blueprinting, etc) built this HO scale model of the legendary Lions Drag Strip in Long Beach, CA. Here's his own story about it with photos, check it out!

Very cool, now just add the stench of the oil refinery nearby, and the yelling from the nearby housing project every time the fuel finals went beyond 10:00...

Do you see what you've done now!?!?!?!?????????
You showed off and have just created a want.
Now, everyone wants one for Christmas, ...........and the shops are closing soon, ............and there's probably not enough HO-sized people in all the stores to let everyone have enough.
That means there'll be half-arsed Lions Drag Strips in everyone's christmas stocking, and it will be YOUR fault!
Oh, the horror!!!!!!

For what its worth, Sylvan Scale Models does a '40 Willys coupe, sedan and a bunch of other vintage cars and trucks in HO resin kit form.

They're true 1/87, though, too small to fit on a slot car chassis. Most of those actually scale out to around 1/64th or so scale, which in model train speak is S-scale.

There was a 1/24 scale track in my area about 20 years ago. It made a great place for my 7 year old son and I to go on Sunday afternoon. We built a number of cars to drag race over the years and then, alas, puberty hit him and that was the end of that. Not much investment in the HO/S scale stuff except for some time and patience. Hmm....

You have to go back to the origin in toy trains. O gauge (Lionel in most people's minds) was actually 0 (zero) gauge from Europe. 0 gauge train trains have been built with bodies of various scales through the years but Marklin intended for it to be 1:43.5 scale.

As manufacturing techniques improved and people wanted smaller trains, they developed 00 (double zero or more commonly oh-oh). It is 1:76 scale. However, there was a problem with the track gauge so some modelers went to 1:87, HO (half oh). 1:87 is half of 1:43.5.

In the late 50’s a guy in England developed slot cars to go along with 00 trains. Aurora in the US copied them but did not change the size of the cars. They did call it HO in order to tap into the toy train market in the US. If you take the early Aurora cars and compare them to true scale autos you can see the difference.

In the mid-seventies, Tyco came out with the TycoPro line of cars. They were scaled to 1:64 which is S scale in train lingo. It allowed for wider tire track widths and larger, can type motors. It is also half of 1:32, which is another popular slot car size. The HO stuck however as the track remained the same (Tyco did make the separation between the lanes larger to accommodate the wider cars). You also had over a decade of calling cars of approximately this size “HO” so why confuse the buying public with “S” as the slot car group was not as into “scale” as the train guys were.
