History Thatcher Darwin Car

I was looking through my copy of Robert Genat’s book “The Birth of Hot Rodding” when I came across the picture of Thatcher Darwin’s boat-tailed special (or is it a speedster?) on page 61. I’ve been thinking of building something similar with a 1931 Chevy chassis I have stashed in my Dad’s barn loft. Does anybody have any information on this car as it was originally constructed or know of additional pictures of it from back in the 40s?
There is another small photo in the reprint of the February 1948 Hot Rod magazine. (page 42 of “Hot Rod Magazine, The First 12 Issues”)
What’s the HAMB policy on posting copyrighted photos from books? I didn’t know if should put the pics with this post or not.
A Google image search led me to a photo of the car (sporting fenders) in the background of a shot taken of an MG at a hillclimb in 1951:

Looking forward to this - the Birth of Hot Rodding is a great book with lots of brilliant cars. Just about every one is an inspiration.

 

The Darwin "Beetle" is alive and well. Rick Cannon found it and restored it. If you have the proper credentials, you can rent it frm Rick and race it.

 

Further Googling this afternoon led me to a reference to a feature on the “Beetle” in Rod and Custom 10 years ago. I dug through my boxes of old car magazines in the garage tonight and sure enough, the June 2002 Issue has an article by LeRoi “Tex” Smith with plenty of information and a couple of pics of the car’s pre-WW2 configuration with a supercharged Cadillac V16 and a hood that looks about 8 feet long!


I don’t think I would want to build a clone of this car by any means, but I kind of like the way the front end looks. Now to find a Marmon grill shell ….
