A guy may dad knows told me I could have a 40 4 door sedan that's been sitting on their place. My question is with all the quarter panels and stuff that carpenters has how hard would it be to make it a coupe? I know the doors are almost the same. The hard part looks like getting the roof and the slope of the rear around the windows in the back.

Build the sedan they make really neat cars with lots of room. The doors are longer than a coupe and would be difficult to narrow to fit. Go get the sedan if it is any good.

The 4 doors front doors are the same except the top corner gets trimmed up some. I don't like the four door sedan. They look like a bus with that extra door to me.

I'm not bitching. All I'm doing is asking if it can done. The back part is prety rough. If it cant be done I will get what's good off it and scrap it. That is what he was going to do with it.

Dude ... dont scrap it... I patred out a 39 cope that had the drivers side rusted completelly away. Made good money and had less than 100 lbs of scrap when it was all said and done... But 4 doors are cool to.

There are a bunch of good parts on the car. I have been looking at this on turning it into a coupe. With all the sheet metal made now I think it would work.

I sure do hope you have some mad metal fabricating skills if you want to turn a fourdoor into a coupe.

If you are willing to buy the quarters, roof, deck lid and rear valance, I would think this feasible. With all the threads on the HAMB about converting 4 doors to 2 doors, this seems doable to me.
I suggest you pursue it further by investigating parts prices and see how that suits you. Then, if you can get a copy of a Ford parts manual for the '40 models, you can further research other common body components. Interesting idea...best wishes with it. Ray

I did one with a cherry 4dr and a rough coupe but the coupe had good quarters and wheel wells and a nice roof.
Split the factory spot welds across the top of the firewall and at the bottom of the wheel wells. Left the bottom 8" of the door pillar of the 4dr and mated to the coupe above the rot. Had to put lower quarter patches in the coupe. Used the cherry front doors of the 4dr. |

There should be enough repop pieces available to make it into a Coupe.

With all of carpenters stuff they have now I think it can be done. I think the hardest part would be the roof.

Or the cost involved if you buy repo sheetmetal. I would try to find a used rear section.

I think with the new sheet metal if you watch it will come up on sale every now and then. But that new trunk lid is very expensive. The quarters are allso but the worked saved from buying new might help out.

Be different. Leave it as a 4-door and chop the top. It'd be a shit load of work, but so would turning it into a coupe. Do a search on Brian Penna 40 Ford. There is also a cool side profile photo of this car in Rolls & Pleats #38.

like skidmarks mentioned.. it has been done..
and yes you could do it.. for me the cost would be the deciding factor.. as I'm not sure what a decent 40 coupe shell would be worth right now.. (and I am not looking for one)
