Default Where would I find the vin for 1950 mercury?

I'm buying a 1950 Mercury and I'm trying to find out where the vin numbers are stamped on this car. I was told that the engine serial numbers are the same as the vin number. There is no engine or trans in this car. THANKS

On the pass side of the firewall, as well as on the frame, pass. side also. The one on the frame us on pass side, and visible from under the hood, almost directly below the firewall.

Engine numbers / flatheads... Engines wer numbered at the engine plant, and shipped to vehicle assembly plants. As the engine was bolted to a frame, the last 4 engine # digits were added to complete the VIN , part of which which was already on the frame. A "star" was stamped at the beginning as well as at the end of the number,...Supposedly to discourage digits bein added, to alter the number. Thus, if you have a "numbers matching" car, ONLY the last 4 digits of the engine # and VIN will be the same.

Ps; The firewall number is on a metal plate,...riveted to the firewall. I found the numbers on a 50 Merc I rewired for a customer a cpl years ago.

I hope this info helps....

The engines didn't have any numbers at all. The two tags are riveted to the pocket on the upper right hinge pillar just in front of the passenger door and are visible under the hood in the extreme right upper cowl area. The upper one is the manufacturer's patent plate and the lower one is the body plate. They have information on exterior paint colors and interior upholstery selections as codes as well as the VIN. As 40FordGuy mentioned, they are also stamped on the frame. The frames on the Mercs have a backwards K-type reinforced frame. The numbers are stamped in the top rail of the inner right K leg very nearly under the firewall and right where the old flathead exhaust pipe connected to the engine. It can be covered in crud or crusty & rusty but that's where they stamped them.

rotorwrench....Thanks...I didn't remember what that frame piece was called....(brain fart time..) Flathead engines did have numbers,...stamped on the intake surface, and visible between the intake manifold and the driver side head. Most flatmotors have been thru a machine shop a few times by now, and those numbers are gone. I didn't know about the one on pass side door.
I have a cpl of them WITH their numbers still readable,...Not sure how those escaped.

Thanks! This car doesn't have a title so... Thats a load off my mind. First project car. Was worried that it would be impossible to title without a vin number.

Just because the car has a vin tag on it, doesn't mean it will be easy to get a title for it.
I'd walk away from it without a title

Matt,....With a VIN, life at the DMV should be much easier. I took my bill of sale, along with the plate that was on the truck when I bought it, to DMV,...and walked out with a new and current registration and title. I hope it works that easy in Wi.
