Just seen a news story about an older gentlemen in Long Beach, CA that rolls the highway in his personal car. The car looks to be an old ambulance and he stops and helps anyone in trouble on the roadside. When finished he gives the motorist a card and asks them to "pay it forward". I guess after the nes station filmed the original story someone cut the guy off and damaged the front of his old ride and he can't fix it. Should would be nice if one of you west coast guys could get us some more info on the guy. I am searching for more info on line and will post it if I come up with anything!

He's down the road apiece from Long Beach (about 125 miles south) in San Diego, actually. He's a good guy, for sure. Been doing this stuff for as long as I can remember (decades).

I saw that story. It looked to be a frontend hit. Looked fixable. The guy was pretty broken up about it too. It never fails that the folks doing good, get the shaft.

I guess the guy that hit him didnt have insurance or what? Why didnt he have to pay to fix the guys car? I mean I am all for helping the guy but seems that the guy that caused the damage is the one that should be paying up here the most. Jim

If I remember correctly, he was helping someone and it got hit. I THINK it was a hit and run. Maybe someone can clarify this.

J.Y. Kid, take the initative to stop and get some info that would allow us to be of some help to repay this kind soul for all his goodness. A lot of us can throw down a few bucks to get this project rolling. You obviously can scour junk yards for goodies and may know a shop that could aid in being the repair spot for this endevour. You know, dirty deeds done dirt cheap!! Challenge has been issued. Hope you can run with the ball and we can get this gent back in action. Best regards, ~sololobo~

Very Sad. One of my buds moved here from Chicago. He belonged to a club back in the day and said that a lot of car clubs were getting bad raps. He said they made it a point to help people on the road and always left them with a card that said "you have been assisted by a member of _______________ car club". Thought that was great.

This fellow is pretty low-key, and won't necessarily ask for anyone's help. He recently wore the engine out in that vehicle (I forget how many hundreds of thousands of miles it had on it), and a few people stepped up to get him a fresh block and got him back on the road. It was a Y-block, and took a little bit of doing. He is worth helping out....

Has anybody in the San Diego area seen the car in person to see if it is really totaled? Unless the frame got tweaked or the engine shoved back into the firewall it looks like an easy fix. If there is not one closer, the yard I frequent here in New Mexico has at least one good front clip and I'm willing to help get one his way.

Not the first time they did a story on Thomas Weller. He is really genuine. Sending some cash for his car fund. They say he helped over 5000 people, so if the car clubs got 5000 people to just donate 5 bucks he could repair anything. He does drive a classic!

I think we need to get more details on exactly what the car needs and maybe we can make arrangements with some of our HAMB brethren for repair. Just thinking. It would be great to help somebody like this guy. he may need more help than just money.

When I roll up to a stranded citizen in my 52 they usually get a little stand off ish. After you get there car back on the road they usually change their tune. Keep the faith alive gentlemen.

I'm in for some cash. I remember as a kid in the early 60's. My dad would pull over all the time and help people on the side of the road. I do it myself and have stopped many, many times. When they ask how much, I tell them "no charge" just help the next guy. Even if they make a cell phone call letting someone know that someone is broke down, that's paying it forward in my book............just sayin.....

Went by and checked out the car today and all I could see was that the rear bumper is tweeked a bit and there is a dent in the left rear quarter just above the bumper. I can fix the dent. If any body knows him to make contact we can get this started.

First time posting but I want to help this guy. I have been trolling this forum for 1-2 years. I'm in Tustin Ca I will make the drive down and bring extra hands (as many as 3 total). I have done basic body work and know my way around a tool chest. Many hands make light work so if there is going to be an effort to rebuild I would like to be a part of helping a man who has help so many.

The one parked outside on the street was the 56 Ford wagon. I don't know how many he has or what else is going on but the one on the street does not have any front end damage.

Okay, so I am a consumate pessimist. But from the looks of it he rearended someone? Or someone crossed the line and hit him head on. He wasn't real clear. I would bet the frame is okay, and a decent front end would fix that car. There must be a few of them out there. Even off of a four door. Tell you what. If somone comes up with a nice nose I'll help the guy bolt it on. I live in so cal. This is a no brainer if the rails are close. If not run it to a body shop and pull em around untill the core support bolts drop in. But first I think we need a decent line on this guy. Make sure he wants help, and all that other stuff.

This one needs to live at the top of the page.
Hard to help from Washington, but, if anything is still being worked on in November, I'll be glad to wheel down that way, and give a hand wrenching, if any is needed. There has to be a ton of talented guys down there that could whip this thing back in to shape pretty quickly.

Maybe we could make this a STICKY, and try to round up some of those front end parts to get this thing repaired. I'm sure there are some folks nearby with Ford parts to spare.
Looks like the quickest repair would be a donor front end. Anyone have any spares lying around they'd be willing to donate? Then again, maybe that is was the car spotted out front of his house was for.

Wish I were closer to lend a hand on putting the rescue rig back on the road. If one of the San Diego members get a solid line on the repairs needed put me down for some financial assistance.

Is it me or does it look like the stainless side trim is '55? The headlight rings look like '55 too. The grill and parking lights and hood are '56.
Regardless, I am in for a donation if someone local can get something going. |

Also found this. I'll be in - at the first of July. Really like to have more info on what happened, and what he wants to do....fizx the old one or get a new one. Right now the efforts seem a little random. I'm sorry I am so far away.

Is anyone local trying to organize this? Here is the deal if you can not find a front clip (nose) locally or for less money:
I talked with the manager of the yard in southern NM I frequent and gave him the story. He said he'd sell me a complete clip for $500 and let me pick it out from the ones he has. This would be inner/outer fenders, hood, grille, bumper, radiator support, and trim, plus radiator if he has one. If this sounds like the way to go I'm willing to donate $50 towards purchase plus pick out and get the parts, and then deliver to Albuquerque where hopefully someone from the HAMB express could continue its trip west. PS: I believe there are better cars to choose, this is the only pic I have in the yard with any 56s in it . . . |

Went back and looked again at the video, the side trim and headlight rings are definitely 55. Also, what is interesting is the car you get a glimpse of at the end of the video sure looks like a 56 Mercury. Is his back up car a Mercury?
Anyway, 55 and 56 fenders interchange, I might be able to get 55s (or 55 trim and rings) instead. Once someone verifies what he needs and I can be of help let me know. |

I have lots of questions. Steve Hartman does these stories for the national news. I would think the guy would be swamped with offers of help by now? Someone set up a fund for the older lady on the bus who the kids were taunting. Last I heard, that was over $500K in a couple days. You would think an area car dealer or two would have come forward.

hiya fellas,
thankee kindly! only happened across this late t-nite - then went to front door and found note from Dave -- didn't see it when I got home from "playin on the freeway" as I come & go thru the garage usually - i'll give him a call tomorrow -- kinda wore out right now to stay up but, just so ya know - a fella from Kansas City has located and purchased a 56 front clip in Texas offa craigslist and is waiting for whereto ship it to for me -- liketa finda local shop that wishes to do this fixin - ain't gonna be easy as the engine tranny driveline was knocked back by the impact and the left exhaust manifold damaged - smashed the steering column and shifting mechanisms - don't appear the frame is bent in front but ------- more tomorrow bedtime for this old codger ---------

Sorry to hear about the damage, but, am stoked that you found us here on the H.A.M.B.
Sounds like you found the parts you need, and just need some help getting everything straightened out. I'm sure that the people in the area can help find a shop equipped to do so. Heck, some of them probably ARE a shop equipped to do so. I wish I were down there to help you. If you still need help come this fall, I'll certainly come through that way on my way to Phoenix for the winter. Can't think of a better group in the world to have on your side than this group here. I'm sure we can all figure something out to help you get back on the road. I'll be watching for manifolds, and column parts around here. Best wishes, and thanks for doing what you do!

Best thing to do is pull all the sheet metal and find out what if any damages are done to the frame. Then pull the motor and tranny and check it all out so we get no surprizes later.
If he has tools we can do the work there.

If the frame is bent (if the whole thing isn't bowed) would it be an easy subframe job? If anything some disc brakes would help stop him a little quicker.
Keep us posted! |

Is there anyone in the are that has a shop where this thing can be torn down? Doesn't need to be a body shop but would help to have a frame machine.
Wish you were on this side, I would host the repair party at my house. Once we find a shop, there will need to be time donated by some of you West Coasters to make the necessary repairs. I'm willing to throw some money or a part or two your way to get it going as well. I think Chip has the resources but if we work together we could probably do a hell of a job getting this man back up and running. God bless ya Highwayman |

UPDATE!!!
Went and stopped by this morning and talked to Mr. Thomas Weller, Real nice guy, Looked over the car and here is what I found. 1. Body is a 55 Front clip is a 56. 2. Needs a whole front clip including front core support. 3. Needs New radiator 4. Needs Power steering bracket 5. Needs new fan 6. Could need steering column 7. Could need Transmission. Front frame looks good as the accident missed the frame horns. The motor is pushed back and all motormounts are broken. Now for the semi bad part - It has tons of extra wiring to contol all the lights and accesories that Mr. Weller has on the car. This will be a challenge as some of it is very old and some not so old. I am willing to donate my time to help fix this BUT!!!! we will need others to step up and donate time as well as a place to do this. Mr. Weller is very very hesitent to open a Pay Pal account that is connected to his bank account. He has heard many horror stories about accounts being emptied. My suggestion is if you want to help $$ wise just send him a check via the posted address. OK Boys it is time to put up or shut up !!!

Way ta go, Fuzzy. You heard him, fellas. Fuzzy is gonna need help. He can't do it all himself. The more the merrier. You guys nearby do the work, the rest of us will send $ to the address posted. Let's follow thru. Good luck to you guys out there. Have fun. Should we maybe contact the news agency that did the original story, and fill them in on our intentions? Or maybe avoid the fanfare...

Man I wish I was closer....I'd be turning wrenches for sure...but CA is too far for me to offer anything except cash.
I'll be sending some as soon as it gets firmed up as to where to send it. Another way to attack this might be to list the parts needed and have people sponsor a part. |

If his car is an automatic and needs a steering column, I've got one in my garage from a 56 Fairlane I can drive down to him.
If he needs it someone send me a pm please.

I was just on Google Earth seeing how far it was from my house and look what I found parked in the street. (see pic)
I'm 80 miles north but can volunteer for wrenching. I need the karma. Have a 7'3" wide box truck if we need to pick up the front clip at a shipping depot. Have a paint booth if you need to spray fenders & hood. Keep posting updates and I'll watch the thread. |

Wow! What a donation. Is the whole car going or just the front clip? From the stance it looks to have a motor and all. I've sourced a fan out in CA and working on the power steering bracket. Let us know what the donor car has that will not be needed and we'll work around that. KK |

To answer the tranny question. He has a spare tranny in case we need one so we don't have to round one up.

Great news, Fuzzy Knight! It will be great to hear the highwayman is out on the road again in his vintage iron helping others! I might have to take a ride to Cali and catch a flat just so I can meet the guy!

P.S. King Karl I talked to Thomas just a few minutes ago and he said if you guys need any of the parts that are left over on the car you are more than welcome to use them and distribute them as you see fit. We will leave that up to you guys. I can tell you that it does have the rare 312 motor and tranny is included. It is a complete mechanical car. I really don't have the time to drive the 80+ miles to help on the rebuild but I will be heading down with the misses for 4th of July and if any parts need to be delivered at that time from the LA area i would be more than happy to bring them down.

KCMarc has ponied up a whole car for this rebuild. At this time I am not sure what extra pieces we will need until we tear it apart. Once we get the donor car and evaluate it there will be a short lull as I will be out of town. Thomas will continue to work on his ride by undoing wires, relays etc and marking them all for reassembly. Upon my return we go at this in earnest and post updates as well as photos.
All of you wishing to donate funds please keep it coming as we have no real idea what is going tobe needed until we get her apart. Thank all of you who are helping as Thomas is the salt of the earth. Fuzzy

Man, you guys are top notch! I wish that I was able to be out there and help Fuzzy with the work. The only thing I'll be able to do for the build from NC is send money and locate parts for you if needed. If you guys want to sell the leftovers that Fuzzy and his crew don't want from the donor I'll gladly run them through for free on PRE73AUTO. (What doesn't sell here on the HAMB that is..) Maybe we can get some tire plug money together for the highwayman after it's all said and done. Again, all of you involved are great people and I hope the very best for all of you. |

Roddin Shack I appreciate your concern for me, but please dont worry about cash being returned to me. If you want to donate to Highwayman from the sale of the donor car parts, that is what I would want. That is where I would prefer any extra money to flow to. I love to support his efforts to help others. Thanks for all your help and concern HAMBers.

So this has to be the coolest thread I have seen on ANY board. so sorry it took so long for me to open it. WHat a great "warm fuzzy" to start the day on.
I'm pretty broke, but while cleaning up my Mom's place (she passed a while back) I found some U.S. money. Maybe i can scrape a few bucks together to help out a good person. Cheers! |

Just a thought... especially if you happen to be local to this guy (or almost local) I bet the CBS affiliate would like to know about the efforts here. It makes a fascinating follow-up to a story they broke. a feelgood kicker as we call it. Probably worth contacting them. It might get even more help pouring in, and possibly some free exposure for businesses helping out.
Please consider it |

I just submitted Mr. Weller for Overhauling. There's a simple form on Chip Foose's website
http://www.overhaulin.tv/ if anyone else wants to do the same. Irregardless, a little donation is in order for this knight of the road. Terry |

I contacted CBS on Friday
They responded over the weekend. It sounds like they are following, but i get the impressionthis guy may not come forward with all the information due to his humility. Let's keep this story fresh untll the paint is drying on his car. Here is their response. Thanks for writing. Yes- we have been in touch with Tom and he is keeping us posted on how everything is going. We'll see where this goes and will consider doing an additional follow-up. Many thanks, Miles Doran CBS News |

Right now we are waiting for the donor car to arrive. Thomas is working on unhooking all the wires and relays in the front so we can change over the front sheet metal and core support

Lets hope it doesn't end up on Overhaulin unless they promise not to slam it to the ground, make it look like a 2003 Taurus and put 20" rims on it.

I agree, I think the talent that we have here will far exceed what Chip can do on his show. Chip is an awesome car builder/designer, but we have more heart and soul. I wish I was still stationed in San Diego so I could help out. I have been broke down onb the side of the road and recieved help from a total stranger, I offered some money, he said but asked for a ride. I got him home, and with his help I was able to get home. We need more people like this. I too have stopped and offered help, some offered money, most offered thanks, the thanks was all the payment I was looking for. I'm glad that so many are working to get this guy back on the road.

guys,
this is truely a one of a kind story right here... i live in north wester pennsylvania and i would be in my truck, with my tools and body work supplies, on the road to help that man tomorrow if thats what it came down to...... its not every day you see someone willing to risk there life for a family with a flat tire, or a elderly woman thats overheating..... the highway is a dangerous place, you never know what your dealing with and even more scary is WHO your dealing with... this man helps anyone and every one, not just whites, not just women. EVERYONE... I deep down in side feel this is how all humans should be.. expecially us car guys..... car guys to me are a different breed.... its someone who values that old piece of metal in the garage, not just saying its uncomfortable and unreliable....... this story should be all over the news and all over car shows on television... this is truely an inspirational story that brings tears to my eyes just telling all my friends about what all was talked about in the news clip and most importantly what you gentleman did to help this guy out....... my hats off to the fella who donated the car.... thats huge and unheard of.. and also to the guy who is helping do all work... you two are a perfect example how ths u.s.a should be and should work... every one on here willing to help and donate should def pat them selves on the back.! great work guys!

"intered" here for nearly a year now since bein kilt August 10th last year --
![]() ![]() This mornin, July 10th, I'd gotten enuf of the destroyed front end out of the way to clear the engine enuf to light it off for the first time since the day Beulah got kilt -- nearta a year ago -- lower PS pulley on the engine smashed and the fan, waterpump and power stng pumps destroyed -- BUT -- after havin set fer nearly a year -- pumped the gas pedal 3 times [ normal ] turned the key -- -engine fired right off and ran -- *BUT* only fer about 60 seconds as I had to turn it off due to the GEYSER of engin oil sprayin all over the driver's side of the engine compartment! Oil pressure switch block damaged by the engine - tranny being knocked outta their mounts on impact -- HUGE mess to clean up this mornin after -- I went out and "played" some -- got my spirits raised by helpin several folk -- last one bein a motorcycle I passed as it was slowin on the shoulder of the NB I-5 almost to the 52 interchange -- couldn't tell initally if he was havin a problem or? -- so I pulled to the shoulder round a curve and waited a mite -- when he didn't appear, I commenced to back down the shoulder w my arrow & strobes lit till I come up on him workin on the bike -- he'd run outta gas on the main tank and hadn't been able to git the reserve switched on before it lost power and died -- add that his battery was dead as well, and he had himself a predicament cause he couldn't kick start it w no juice -- where I came in w my booster pac got him under way and he were'nt late fer school @ ![]() ![]() ![]() July 23rd Have discovered that frame *is* damaged -- bent, buckled, & torn -- probably why steering is so difficult -- can't turn by gripping the drums, turns w effort w the steerin wheel - right depressin -- gonna go out & "play" some to git my thoughts offa this -- some stories here bout how I do this -- git my mind offa things depressin that is -- http://snowchains.tripod.com/sandieg...ogonlinediary/
