Event Coverage NZHRA 50th Anniversary National Show 2012

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Greg Stokes, Jun 21, 2012.

  1. Hopefully not too much off topic but its four weeks until NZ's milestone 50th Anniversary National Hot Rod Show celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the New Zealand Hot Rod Association.

While there will be a wide range of hot rods, street machines, muscle cars and custom cars on display there is a large number of traditional themed hot rods on display.

There will also be a lineup of iconic original show rods of the sixties & seventies in their restored or immaculate as is state. One of them is the green Dodge based bucket named Vandal (on the bottom of the poster). This was John Reid's first hot rod and has recently been restored to its late sixties - early seventies format. Other treasures include the Crown Jewel originally built by the late Bill Perriton & now owned by Mike Hooper and also the famous "Baloo" Fiat Topolino drag car of the sixties campaigned by Pete Lodge and now owned by Carl Jensen.

This event is hosted by Harbour City Rod Club and Southside Streeters and is one of the events which are all part of NZHRA’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. It seems fitting to return to the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane, Auckland to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of NZHRA. Furthermore for the two host clubs, the initial objective was to display a wide variety of high-calibre hot rods and street machines to showcase the hot rodding hobby to 20,000 patrons of the already established CRC Speedshow.

Over 100 entries were received from all over New Zealand which is believed to be a first in a number of years to fill the 65 car display allocation. Interestingly the committee thoroughly went through the selection process and was able to accommodate for 70 cars. Most classes of the NZHRA Show regulations are catered for and there is an excellent cross-section of hot rods, street machines & muscle cars best representing 50 years of organised hot rodding in NZ. Special mention must go to Protecta Classic Insurance for their support of the People’s Choice Award, Frosted Glass for supporting the Sweepstakes Award and Rocket Speed Equipment for supporting the Best Nostalgia Award.

All in all it is to be a spectacular event for all. In addition to the vehicles on display, NZHRA and LVVTA are representing themselves with special displays and there’ll also be a range of national show merchandise available. Entrants will be entertained all weekend and the awards banquet will be on Saturday night MC ‘ed by Hauraki’s Mike Currie and a hot rod & drag racing memorabilia auction will also be included. Tickets are available now for non show entrants at $75.00 per head for the awards banquet at Saturday night on a first come basis. NZHRA affiliated members and their partners (not mates) are entitled to a 25% discount on admission price to the CRC Speedshow when they show their NZHRA affiliation card. The discounted price is $15 each instead of $20 each. Visiting hot rodders will also be entitled to park in the preferred parking area for hot rods, customs and classics.

    National Show Merchandise

It's just over one week before the 2012 NZ Hot Rod Association National Hot Rod Show opens at CRC Speedshow at the ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane, Auckland over the weekend of 21-22 July. The 71-strong line-up of NZ's best hot rods, custom cars & street machines will be all on display for NZHRA Judging as per the National Show rules. The host clubs; Harbour City Rod Club and Southside Streeters have worked hard to raise the bar of indoor shows in New Zealand and are overwhelmed by the interest in the show from entrants, sponsors, spectators and overseas visitors from Australia and the USA.

This show is one of the events which are part of the NZ Hot Rod Association's 50th Anniversary celebrations and with that concept the show committee has put together a Souvenir Program which will be available at the show. The full color, A4 size program totals 36 pages and has news from NZHRA & LVVTA, spotlights features of the show
including the NZHRA 50 Year Display and the Ray White Boulevard of Dreams. Not to mention profiles on the major award sponsors - Protecta Insurance Peoples Choice, Frosted Glass Sweepstakes and Rocket Speed Equipment Best Traditional Car Award. As well as the strong support from Castrol EDGE, Meguiars, the Village Bar & Kitchen and NZ Hot Rod Magazine, NZV8 Magazine and NZ Petrolhead. All 71 vehicles are shown in the program as well as profiles on each club. Special thanks to the valued advertisers who made this program a reality. Further, even greater thanks must go to Mitch Keys of Electric Designs for the design and production of the program and poster artwork. It is his creative flair and vision which has made this program very special - check him out at www.electricdesigns.co.nz

The program is available at the show for $5. Each of the car show entrants and sponsors will get one copy free and we have printed limited quantities. See the attached file showcasing the cover featuring the three poster cars for the event. Also available will be T-shirts at $20 each featuring the artwork of Ron van Dam and we also have posters available at $5 each of the National Show artwork you would have seen in NZ Hot Rod Magazine, NZV8 Magazine and also NZ Petrolhead. The NZ Hot Rod Association will also be displaying at the National Hot Rod Show with a full range of 50th Anniversary merchandise and LVVTA will also be on display showcasing their services to the low volume modified vehicle industry. Also on the NZHRA stand will be some members of the Pukekohe Hot Rod Club with entry forms and information to the 2012 Century Yuasa NZHRA Street Rod Nationals which they are hosting at Whitianga in November.
