What size motor, and what do you use? Seems like with oil technology, not alot of SAE30, SAE-40 used much these days, lots of blends.
What works for you?

I just got my car three weeks ago and the oil hadn't been changed in years... so right now I'm running 20W-50 to clean the engine out.

Synthetic 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on OAT, although I did have some problems with MAF contamination. Switched back to Mineral and no more issues...

I just switched to Brad Penn 10-40 in my 289 Ford. Was running Napa brand stuff because I was changing oil often due to sticky lifters. The Brad Penn seems to keep the lifters quieter.....could just be in my head too.

I use full synthetic in everything and the lightest weight I can use and still have oil pressure. I spent some time reading http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ and have become a believer in his practices. My DD OT vehicle now has 160K on it and is still running strong. As for synthetic oil killing a motor, I call BS. With all the things that could go wrong, synthetic oil is the last thing to blame.
FYI, the ONLY reasons I use synthetic instead of dino is that it flows better in extreme cold than dino oil. Also, more miles between oil changes since it doesn't break down like dino oil. Other than that, no harm in running dino. I find it interesting that my Ducati and my BMW superbikes are delivered from the dealer with full synthetic and only recommend synthetic to be used in their engines. Synthetic is so bad for your engines, lol. |

yep, been using it for years and I run my stuff pretty hard. I also noticed years ago in a Ford I had that used oil, when I went to VR1 20-50 it used less than 1/2 the amount in the same miles and I used straight 60 in my Harley for 20 years . Good stuff

Castrol 5-20 in the old lady's 300C. Valvoline 20-50 in the Nailhead. Seems to keep the pistons from swapping holes. 10-30 Q-state in the pickup. Wix filters in em all.
