I know it's a bit early to start this thread but I hope to be showing the "Ghost Rider Roadster" again at the 2013 Detroit Autorama, if they will have me. 2011 was the the first ever indoor car show for us and I did learn a lot and would really like the opportunity to present the "Ghost Rider Roadster" in a better light . Myles and I have started planning early since I am so far away from Detroit and it takes some time to work out the logistics.....just in case. The Autorama just keeps getting bigger and better and I would really hate to miss it and the good friends that we have made over the many years of attending.

You guys are crazy. There's no 2013 Autorama. The world ends on Dec 21 2012!!
But just in case it doesn't, I'll be there.

Ron,
The basement is a lot of fun, but really your car would be appreciated more upstairs. There is true judging upstairs, where the basement is a pick award. Not that I think you're a trophy whore, but it does mean more with a win upstairs.

You're welcome! I love Autorama. I set up a booth downstairs in the Artist's Alley (2013 will be the 4th year), and I always have a great time. It was great that Norwell was actually able to get away and make the show this year. I hear they moved it to mid- March for 2013.

Todd; you are right, the dates are March 8-10. For som reason, I thought it in was late Feb. This is good to know as I thought it would be great to make the Grand National Show in Jan. then spend Feb in Arizona then head for Detroit in March. It will probably reamain just a dream, however.

I'm planning on being there with a bunch of guys from Perth, Western Australia, one of which is building a car to (hopefully) contend the Ridler Award. I know, not HAMB friendly, but it should be a pretty cool experience. Sounds like I'll have to check out downstairs too.

Brootal, glad to hear a buncha you guys are comin' up from Oz! Hope your friend's car shows well, but I gotta say, the basement is THE place to be! Make sure and come downstairs and hang out!
Ron, if ya end up putting the Ghost Rider in the basement, I'm betting they'll want to put you front and center at the bottom of the main entrance!

![]() I guess if the shoe fits, we should probably wear it... ![]() I'm planning to bring a new build downstairs next year, so the March date works well for me. I know we'll be thrashing on it and the extra time will be nice. Very excited for next years show! .

I didn't get mine as I figured I knew better than the judges what my car was all about. I didn't need to change anything to get their approval as it was pretty much the way I wanted it. If they didn't like something about it , just maybe their thinking was different then mine and since it was my project, then so be it. The more I think about this Jeff, the more I like the idea of the basement. ![]() Ron

Been making the trip from Upstate New York almost every year since the mid 90's. My son now lives in Michigan so the Autorama and Woodward Dream Cruise are good reasons to pay a visit. Autorama is a great break in the winter and helps get those creative ideas flowing. Hope to see Ghost Rider make it in 2013.

I've heard a rumor that Elvis has been spotted at The VEC (GM) engineering convertible tops, door seals and such...but he most certainly was not spotted at The Green Green Grass of Billetproof this Saturday?!?!?

Rudy; I went to the 2013 Autorama site then to the "Extreme" entry form to print it off but I noticed the date on it was 2012. Will you be posting an updated one ? I have a $50, burning a hole in my pocket ...

Very happy to report that the application form with a MO and pictures for a spot in the lower level of Cobo is in the mail.We are leaving on Monday with the roadster in tow to it's winter storage spot just outside of London Ont. so that it will be closer to Detroit. I think we have all of the details covered and I'm really looking forward to March !!!

I checked in today with the Detroit Autorama web site and found that the 2013 Vehicle Entry Application form has been posted. I did not see however, any mention of the lower level "Extreme" entry application details. Is anyone aware of changes to the layout of the 2013 show ?

Everyone will get an extra week to work on their stuff as the show is one week later March 8-10. The traditional date got trumped because of a boat show. Looks like they will have that new date for a long time.

Looking forward to being there again with the Ghost Rider Roadster . It's going downstairs this time and I think you will like the way it will be presented. I do love this show and all the friends Myles and I have made there. Bring it on !!!

Any idea if he will be doing any classes during the week leading up to Autorama or if he would consider doing one? I would love to participate in one of his classes, just never seems to be one close to us.

unfortunetly I have a work space and no car to work on unless you want to see him do patch panels on my 54 and "touch up" some of the old custom work !!!!, and not enough of the tools we would need i.e english wheel, sheet metal break, shrinker stretcher, to really learn something ( it's snips, metal pipe to beat on, wood bucks for shaping, etc for me ). I am sure we might be able to come up with something "big" to work on, but that person would probably have to suck up much of the cost to have a legend work on their car I assume?. I'm thinking a top chopping or a section job, gotta be "all in" with this opportunity. Would there be a victim? would there be enough interest to pay for it , could we find a shop with the required eqiupment?

My son Myles took this shot in front of Cobo in 2011 when we showed the "Ghost Rider Roadster" for its first show. What a fantastic time we had and we really appreciated the warm weather, Rudy ordered up for us . Talk about going all out !!!
Can't tell you how much we are looking forward to doing this again in March !!!Ron

Definetly going on,... they had sort of rough car to chop, but found a better example of the same car,... so he will be making sparks on that one instead. Matt B and I sat with Gene at the "Circle of Champions brunch" (which will be replaced by something else this year) last year,... looking forward to seeing him again,... Gene is a first class guy !

Well,, because of the fun I had downstairs...It is exciting to me to see what you folks can dream up and make into works of art!
I started to encourage others , and so for the last 5yrs.. I have booked a Deluxe Highway Coach to bring people from Hamilton, Brantford, Cambridge, Waterloo and Woodstock, London areas to Detroit Autorama. I noticed some of you are from the area.. and might be interested in a comfortable ride.. or know a friend you could pass this on to.. Remember, some years the weather sucks,, and the traffic to the parking can be difficult, so we take care of the driving, the parking, you can sit back and shoot the breeze with a bus load, or just listen to the others BS...lol Also, you can get in to meet and greet some of the hot rod personalities in a private function for Bus passengers. more info http://www.globalserve.net/~jrivers/Autorama2013.html Thanks! I sure hope it is happening Saturday afternoon! I was at show where they did this.. and they ended up delaying the project so they could please a lot of folks,, they did 1hr fri, and another sat, and another sunday.. and it sort of sucked because you didn't see it all unless you hung out there all weekend.
I guess the same thing applies if you go fri, and they are doing it sat... sigh.. is there more information on this event? Thanks Jamie |

Used to make it a yearly trip with a busload and sometimes two busloads of guys from our car club in New York. Turned out to be a lot of work for the organizers and the transportation costs kept going up. Last year a few of us shared driving in my truck. Plan on doing the same thing again this year. Booked our hotel last week.
My son lives north of Detriot so he joins us and we have a good time. Great place to see some awesome rides and always good for some creative ideas for our own projects. See ya all there.

I'll be there again this year working with our dealership display of GM Performance Parts. That is unless I hit the Lotto before then!
Last year I think I had about two hours free time all weekend so I didn't get much time to see anything. But I did spend at least half of that time downstairs. |

This is the 50th anniversary of the Ridler award. You get two great shows for the price of one. Autorama upstairs and the not to be missed Extreme show downstairs. One of the highlights this year will be the display of former Ridler award winning cars. More than half of them should be on display making this a huge opportunity to see these cars. They may not be your cup of tea but they are a lot of history all in one place.

Henry Ford said you can get any color(not colour) you want, as long as it is black. That's good enough for me! Maybe we should continue this debate over a few beers in Detroit. Stewart is buying. ![]() ![]() .

Really looking forward to the show. Unfortunately, I got laid off from my job of 6 and a half years back in July of 2012. Happy to say, I found a job by October but have no vacation time so I'm only able to be there Friday and Saturday and wont be able to have a booth downstairs. I will be hanging out with Ed Tillrock and Max Grundy, though and may be selling some of my art prints in Ed's booth. Either way, I will be there having a blast.

Should be a big show with it being the 50th anniversary of the "Ridler Award". I hear they have about 30 previous Ridler winners coming to the show. There's also a special display honoring JR LArivee and Fred Warren who both passed away this past year.

I hope to be there all three days. We should be floating around both floors, but will probably spend most of the time upstairs at the CRUIS'NEWS magazine booth. A wish for safe travels to all HAMBers who make the trip.

I'm getting excited. It's always a good time.
Sorry to bitch and I'm sure you have your work cut out for you Rudy, but if interest is so big please keep the nearly stock stuff with different colored body panels and patina to an absolute minimum. It's not that people shouldn't enjoy them I'm just not sure they belong at an indoor car show let alone the "DETROIT Autorama" rant over

My son lives 1,000 miles away from where I live so when we get to attend the Detroit Autorama it's always a great time. It's the stuff that happy memories are made of...

Planning on being there.... spending most of my time DOWNSTAIRS at 'Autorama Extreme,' doing some DJing and running the Miss Autorama Pin-Up Girl Contest. If anyone knows of a lovely lady who'd like to participate in the contest, please have her contact me here or on facebook (we have an Official event page there) so I can get here the registration packet and have her registered in advance.... $1,000 for first place!!!
Hope to see/meet a lot of you then, cheers, -Del Villarreal |
