I am new to rods of the age on the Hamb but not new to muscule cars, drag cars etc. I have done a bunch of searches on each piece of the setup I am looking for on here but am only confusing myself in the end. My question seems kind of convaluted but here goes.
I picked up an Essex coupe body and various parts. In with the parts were 2 Model A frames, 1 excellent, 1 rusty. I do plan on a 4" channel (or about the width of the frame). My qestion is this: when you are setting up a Model A for a more traditional highboy look (IE: not slammed) how much drop is used and where is it dropped? And how much drop is gained with each mod? 3 1/2" at the axle (dropped stock A axle) = self explanitory I have seen a pie cut at the firewall to bend the frame up (not a fan of the look) Z the front and back (width of the frame in front. Double in the rear?) = Good to do on an A frame? I have heard a T spring with 2 leaves out in the rear? Reversed spring eye in the front? dropped front spring or raised crossmember? I understand alot of what I asked is subject to how it is done, personal preferance etc. I also know I could do a spring behind, suicide style, heavy Z front or back, build a whole new frame, heavy / deep channel etc. I guess I am just looking for some pointers on how it used to be done and how the out come was. Thanks in advance. __________________ The pic is about the height I would like to acheive. Maybe a slightly smaller rear tire and 1" lower in the back but other than that just about right on.

Outside with reverse eye main leafs front and back.
![]() Outside after the rear frame height step: ![]() outside after rear step and drop axle: ![]() I also have yet to remove the leaf springs in the rear pack I think it has 8 leafs in it now. I'm going to remove a few and the new front 5.50 tires for it are shorter as well. Last edited by Hitchhiker; 04-20-2012 at 08:08 PM. |

Thanks hitchiker! Couldn't ask for a better photo line up and explaination. The last pic with the channel to the bottom of the frame would just about do it.

the rear is still a little high for my taste. I think the car you pictured has a spring behind rear end. this is what I am going for. Last edited by Hitchhiker; 04-20-2012 at 08:17 PM. |
