Default The ten Most Beautiful cars of the 1930s

The 1930s were a very special decade for motoring in America. Despite starting out in the Great Depression, it was a time of massive improvements in terms of automotive engineering, quality of roads (WPA projects), and most of all, a huge leap forwar...

I can't argue against any of those choices. I agree 100%.

Great choices, and there are so many more that captured the art deco look in the late 30s. Maybe I'm a little bias toward the fat fender cars.

Here is one I think is worth mentioning - 37 Nash Lafayette 400. Amazing lines for an "everyman's " car.

This is a great post...It's tough to pick just 10 but I agree with the list. There's a couple of them on there that I'd forgot about. The cars from this era were so great for so many reasons. I think it was the sweet-spot in time. art Deco and vehicle design are just so right together. I don't know too many folks that wouldn't do a double-take if they saw any one of those cars motoring down the street. They are just PERFECT.

I have a secret fetish for three window Zephers. I'd probably sell all I have left for one. Love them!

Question is - is this US designed and built cars only or world wide? The 1930s are my all time favorite era and Europeans had the most beautiful designs, but do they belong here?

Here's another U.S. homegrown contender - even if designed by Raymond Loewy, a French Russian immigrant as his first full automotive design - the Hupmobile Aero Dynamic (sic). teardrop styling through and through....

I'm partial to the first half of the '30's. But in the last few years I find myself drifting toward the '35 Fords.

1935 Roadster (Stole this from somewhere on the net)

Great list. My favorites are the
1932 Ford Sedan
1933 Duesenberg SSJ
1935 Auburn 851 Supercharged Speedster(tho all Auburn speedsters are stunning)
1936 Cord 810 conv.

and I'd add to that the 1932 Chrysler Imperial CH Speedster (body by LeBaron)
Walter P.'s personal car...

The '37 Mercedes 570 Roadster:

And the '37 Talbot Lago(s)

Great choices. @38zephyr, any chance you can repost photos of your car that are capable of being enlarged?

I'd really like to drool over it some more.

Thanks!

I'm with Harms on the classics. Still, you can't pick just 10 stunning designs, classic or mass production. I also have a tendancy toward the car's engineering having an effect on how I view it. Indivdual customs from the likes of Murphy, Judkins, LeBaron and Dietrich are absolute rulers in the ways of style. Many of the elements found on the customs became standard fare, sort of a peek at the future. One specific example, the "false hood" design used on the 34 Deitrich and LeBaron customs became a Packard standard through 1947. The Chrysler Imperial and it's siblings had that for quite a while too from 31 to at least 33 that I'm sure of, even the 32 Plymouth used it. By false hood, I mean the rear portion covering a substantial amount of cowl. The 40-41 Lincoln Continental is one of the sexiest body designs of it's time. While still having it's Model T inspired chassis engineering, the looks made up for what it lacked in that dept. I could on and on with this topic...

great list...
would add the 1937 zephyr coupe
and the 1938 studebaker commander coupe (another Loewy job - in this case only a brush up of an existing design, but those headlight pods are just plain cool - in my world)
