Well here we are in 2012 and if you've been following the Twin has made some passes at Eagle Field and been included in a Downtown Fresno photo shoot although not finished. This thread will be dedicated to "Fit and Finish" giving the Twin some much needed detail and distinguising it from the barn find look it unintentially has.
The team over at Hot Rod Coalition has a Feature on the Twin and I with the BEST photos before we tore it down to ready for the 2012 Season. Check it out here.............. http://www.hotrodcoalition.com/rockys-evil-twin/ http://hotrodcoalition.com I also want to thank everyone for their support in the "Search For a Champion" Sweepstakes, we'll be notified Feb 23 if we made it to the "Finalist" runoff. For those who are seeing the TWIN for the first time here is the original thread links. Thank You, Rocky Phillips Toymaker's Twin Engine Dragster Build http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=533613 Toymakers needs your VOTES to go Barnstorming! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=656822 Here's where we were..................... ![]() ![]() Here's to 2012 ![]() Twin Disc Clutch ![]() 15' Ring Slot Chute ![]() ![]() ![]() Mounting the Body using Army Surplus Fasteners Last edited by Toymaker; 02-16-2012 at 01:16 PM. |

I have plenty and have only used 4 to this point. I haven't decided on the mounting of the belly pan and still have to mount the T body.

A Little progress has been made with some details being addressed. I shortened the cowl to the angle of the engine plate then filled the gap between the eng plate and cowl with some 1/8" aluminum sign material, tuff stuff
![]() To mount the plate I used Chevy VC bolt "load spreaders", I wasn't looking forward to more small tab making. ![]() Here's the view from the back side. ![]() I also have been fiddling with this and that.........here's the mods I made to the exhaust. ![]() ![]() Finally found a tank, need to have some repairs, make some straps and clean it all up. ![]() Before the night was over I had to try the T body fit after the front of the body was completed. The mounting of the T body is coming to me and although I'm not looking forward to the glass work I'm salivating at the thought of how low the body will make the car look when I figerglass in the Tonneau cover.

Getting the details detailed..........painted the axle, hairpins, spindles, drag & tierod, steering box cowl extension, bellhousings and picked up the intakes and seat from the electroplater. The Moon tank just bneeded a patch which my son did then I wet sanded it with wd40 and 180 paper and finished it off with red scotchbrite, also wet with wd4o. Besides the history marks it turned out ok.

That'd be awesome!!!! I forgot to mention when I sanded my tank I put 2 layers of masking tape over the original Moon Sticker and it protected it from the sand paper and scotch brite. I was carefull when sanding around it but ran the scotchbrite over the tape and it held up.

You are an artist Rocky, it's going to look spectacular with all of the bits painted and plated. The body will be the icing on the cake!
You could save yourself a lot of fiberglass work and make the tonneau out of aluminum.

Time for some progress photos, Eagle Field event is just over 2 months away and I have some Car Show commitments so I finished fitting the Helmet, Kidney and hoop upright bars.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lining all the bars up was the biggest obsticle, nothing worse than looking at it and they are not simetrical, I started with a Tape measure, than used a level but ultimately went with eyeballing it ![]() I have a hole saw joint cutter but I've learned to use the chop saw with success and I'm happy with the results. Here is a brief description of my method. ![]() My friend Roseville Carl sent me these "T" clamps and I copied the mounts he made for his Digger. Tanks gonna be the icing on the cake, I may have to rename the car the Lembke and Phillips Twin ![]() ![]() ![]() That's all for tonight, tomorrow I hope to have all the bars welded in and primer the beast! |

I finished the helmet bars with the tube between the uprights, then I was struggling with what to mount the Fuel Tank to and had been wanting to ad a diagonal so I combined the 2.
![]() Here is the chassis in better light..... ![]() We're rolling along NOW!

You may not be Tom Hanna, but you are building one fine looking digger! Almost too bad that all of that aluminum will be covered up with the bucket.

Thanks Chris! The chassis is fully welded and the body is done less some removal of paint and stickers (the aluminum was off a Nascar trailer my friend pulled at one time) that need to come off. After some paint and pick up the rear end housing that's getting powder coated I can start putting the pieces together. This week I'll start on the 350 that I'm putting in place of the 307 that resided in the LH side.

This week/weekend has been good. I painted the chassis with rattle cans and @ .99 (lowes) it only cost $8 and I can touch it up. ![]() My son jokes with me that I finally had something powder coated, the rearend housing cost $45, it looks Bitch'n and should resist the wear and tear of getting in and out. ![]() After installing the rearend housing I had to fit the side panels......... ![]() With that all done I put all the pieces together and added my (painted) aluminum drums.![]() Mounted the battery and assembled the front end and we have a roller! ![]() ![]() Now I have to get the engines ready. When I pulled the heads off the 307 I found the EX valves had been "Kissin" the pistons, luckily no damage to the camshaft. I never thought that .480 lift would interfer but I'll be checking the 350 when I assemble it The goal is to have it together by next weekend for a local car show so I'll have more regularly! Rocky

Thanks everyone! The Battery is a "Dry Cell" so I think it's OK, but the car won't pass TECH at most tracks anyways
I'd like to remove the battery all together and install Mags but $$$$$ prevents it! Can't wait to drive it again!

Had some time and was wondering what class the TWIN would have been back in the day and read somewhere to use the SCTA designations as they reflect the early classes. So....AA is 501 and over, the TWIN is 700, runs Gas and plans are to be a modified roadster..............AA/GMR or AA/GD for now as a Dragster even though SCTA doesn't show a Dragster Category and Lakester doesn't work for me. With some more research and in time my goal is AA/FMR

Engines and Engine Plates are painted and put together, Chevy orange awt to set it off nicely!
![]() Then the business end, had to position the replacement 350 on the LH side and after seeing some marks on the rig gears that showed me it was too tight I moved them apart. New clutch is really nice, too bad it's covered up ![]()

Looks good Rocky , Is the clutch your useing need to have the pack clearance set after useing it a few times , if it is I'm sure I have an extra set of the long 12 inch feeler gauges so you can set it more evenly, let me know and I'll find them and send them out Tim Jones

rockey,
after looking at your intake the inner runners are shorter then the outeres so I figured you may have had a lean problem on one side? I was just wondering after you tore down the engine and did an inspection did you find the intake manifolds evenly distributed the fuel/air mix or did you find any indications of lean conditions on different cylinders? just curious Paul |

I understand the engines are counter rotating, but does it matter how the 2 engines are timed (indexed) to each other?

I had plans on attending one of the biggest car shows around today but the weather had me worried and I didn't want to take the TWIN out in the rain. After I was sure of good weather I pulled the TWIn out of the shop to take a few photos. After the photos I fired it up and had some ignition issues, cleaned up the points, added a ballast resistor, set the dwell and timing and man all I can say is its sounds SOOOOOO much better with two 350's! I cannot wait to get the clutch pedal dialed in and drop the hammer on it!!
![]() ![]() ![]() The plugs miss by this much! ![]() Chromed the Brake Handle! ![]() 5 Spokes are forever! ![]() ![]() Thought I'd never have a MOON Tank, especially with the Tr-Bar cap! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I admit it aint real sexy but it is how I think I would of built it in late 59!

This is exactly what Hot Rodding is all about ! The best part was when you started the project, and all the people who said it woud'nt work,or tried to change everything you did, they sure shut up when it smoked the tires for a 1000 feet!!! lots of people have started projects like this ,but give it up when something do'nt just bolt together. Love the car Rocky, super job making a bunch of parts you had laying around into a bitchen car. see you at Riverdale! Chris

You are an inspiration Rocky. You had a dream to have drags at Eagle Field, and made it happen. You had a dream to build and run a twin engined dragster, and you've done it. You have a dream to take your twin on tour, and you are going to do it. Many talk the talk, you walk the walk. Hats off to you my friend.
And yes, the twin looks like the type of cars I saw at Pomona, San Gabe, and LIONS in the late 50's. You got it right!

I never get tired of looking through your threads, that car is full of badassery.
now the stupid question of the day, do i spy your throttle pedal on the left side? because of the drive line taking up real estate on the right?

The audio on this computer is less than good, but it doesn't sound much like 2 different engines at all. They are in harmony. And those Strombergs are tuned perfectly.
I can't help repeating myself, but this car is just simply fantastic !! Tom S. in Tn.

Think you need to take the gal whos voice you hear to the drags. She sounds like she has had her nose stuck in too many paperback books reading them love stories.
Like the sound of those motors under a load. |

Rocky i gotta say we must have the same thought process build a super bitchin car in the garage and then make test runs right out on the road in front of the house! My neighbors probly love me the same way yours love you lol. Damn that digger is so badass i cant wait till the hamb drags to see that car in person and officially meet you. I just put a new motor in my afx dodge and done the exact same thing you done only no one brave enough to video for me lol. Take care and ill see you at the hamb drags.

Tim, I think I know what you are hearing, when the clutch gets hot it wouldn't allow me to get it in gear with-out "Cramming" it into gear, I've since adjusted it. Thanks for the Shirt "Thumbs-Up".

Tonight I got out the shears and made up a couple of "Flash Shields" for the carbs. The holes you see in the tops are to tighten the carb top screws which double as the shield mounting.

Very cool artwork for the shirt. Who did it? BTW good to see you testing the car just like the old days
, I also felt the highway in front of my place was my private testing ground back when i was running my cars, now all the roads around me are gravel , Could be some tricky driveing to test now
