So Cal Plating inspired 1936 Ford

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by nostalgia59, Dec 11, 2011.

  1. I've wanted to build this car for a long time and finally got around to it. The way I did it is definately the hard way but the results are encouraging. I started with a fordor humpback that came with a ton of extra parts, then found a tudor back half and doors. Mated it all together and modified it to resemble a Touring. I'm trying to keep it period built 1940's by using '39 ford suspension/brakes/trans and a 59A engine. I will be using ripple disk caps on '36 wheels, homemade skirts, '41 ford gas door, '37 Desoto bumpers, lowered spare, smooth hood sides and running boards and of course a Duvall windshield and custom made top.

I`ve often wondered why this hadn`t been recreated years ago. THANKS YOU for building it.

  8. Doors and cowl reshaping were the most challenging part of this build. I found that the 35-36 ford upper rear window area had the right shape to use for modifying the doors and cowl.

i like the lines on your project, keep up the great work

  11. Luckily I had a roadster to make patterns from for the cowl and doors. I'm using sedan doors that are 6 inches longer than roadster/touring doors.

  13. I was able to use the roof from the fordor and some pieces of a late model roof to form the top...

  14. I filled the roof with a piece from a 55 chevy panel delivery, then made the side opening trim from leftover garnish mouldings...

  15. These '37 Dodge taillights came with the fordor and look pretty good. I plan on using '37 pontiac headlights (pics later) and they have a similiar shape...

That is coming off slick. I like your term "inspired" rather then trying to clone the earlier car as too many people would.

  19. Retirement is GREAT! I need to get this one and some other cars done before I'm a total geezer (Haha). Don't have the same energy I used to and damn arthritus from banging on these cars all these years....

  24. My idea all along was to build an Inspired version for several reasons. Mine will be more like these cars and I didn't want a long enduring project trying to clone the So Cal Plating car. So many difficult modifications on the original I know it would burn me out.

I actually think that noting that your car was inspired by the earlier car and not building an exact clone honors original car more than building a clone. I try to understand the clone thing but then after a while it becomes a "my clone is more exact than you clone" thing as it is with the Graffiti coupe clones.
