Lightbulb Anytown ....

Anytown ....

On any given weekend - in any given town

I have seen a dozen rods parked at the local diner
in a town of less than 100 people ....

Pomona sounds good to me, maybe Southern California may have started it. There have always been somebody changing something to go faster all over this great country, from the big industrial cities to the hill of the moonshiners.

If you were to look up the circulation of HOT ROD, CAR CRAFT, ROD & CUSTOM etc., by region, the midwest has always been at the top of the heap since the late fifties according to STANDARD RATE & DATA. This coming from a guy that grew up in the fifties in SOCAL.

well i look at it this way..............

the early magazines that came out came from southern california.

car craft, hotrod, rod&custom, and many, many more.

folks like barris, winfield, roth, and many, many more all cut their teeth in california.

now the creators of the performance parts that blossomed into what there is today that were created by the names of;

iskenderian, arias, edlebrock, bell safety equipment, simpson, ed pink, keith black, dean moon, and many, many more.

drag racing and crusing and surfing and a lot more came from southern california.

but today all that has spread world wide, but the originators and the manufacturers are still MADE IN AMERICA.

When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's , if you were into hotrods & kustoms , you found them in Southern California the most of anyplace around at that time . They were all over the USA back then but you read and heard about most of them coming from that area the most . California was the big place for hotrods and drag racing back in the day !
Just my opinion !

Since the FIRST hot rod carclub was formed in Southern California, and it is still active today, I believe it's right here. Bonneville was mentioned, but Speedweek is run by the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA)! Indy was also mentioned, and Frank Kurtis fielded probably more cars than anyone in it's history, all built in Southern California, too....

Me too. I was driving down Slauson Ave in Culver City yesterday and spotted the old Isky building. The sign still painted on the wall. Kinda faded but still there.

I think that a lot of hot rodding began right here in southern New England despite the fact that all the big wig magazines were being published in california where they featured california cars. There is A LOT of hot rod history in new england and a lot of cars here.

I'm going to brag here & say that in the towns of Cumberland,RI, lincoln,RI,Pawtucket, RI & Attleboro,Ma theres a ton of hotrods on the road.On a nice warm night you can drive around & see at least 15-20 rods cruising & a few that you don't know or have seen before. And thats in a short cruise!! there all a joining towns so you can cover a lot in 1 nite.
we have a honey dew donut shop in cumberland,RI & it looks like "mels drive in" on a friday, sunday or tuesday nite.

yep! New England is where its at. Go cruise down to the Berlin Turnpike in CT (known for its retro places, and famous for its cruising hey-days) and you are gauranteed to see quite a few rods and stockers cruising the strip on a saturday night; getting bites to eat and enjoying the night. Its famous for its street racing too. there's a lot of history here and a lot of new england hot rods here. In the summer months we could prob rival california. Back in the day in New England; theyre cars where driven all year in the snow and whatever. The cars where driven no matter what and quite a few of them survived the test of time and the trying climate. New england has a lot to brag about

Shoot, it's wherever you find yourself behind the wheel of your hot rod, that's the Capital of Hot Rod Land. It's not a place, it's an experience. When I get behind the wheel of a built by hand machine, I don't care who's out there, I don't care where I am, because I am one with the thing that I have created.

Okay, I am going to have some fun.

Sorry to tell everyone, but it didn't start in So Cal or Bonneville.

Daytona first.

Even as early as 1903 they were doing land speed races and hot rodding anything they could get a hold of. Even steam cars they hot rodded!

Bonneville and California were about 30 years behind the times of Florida before things really got popular there.

Didn't you know that Floridians set the stage for the rest of the country to follow.

What about the bootleggers in North Carolina? Hot rodding and customizing, but playing for keeps. Time in the slammer. Playing with their freedom.
Is So Cal, everyone was playing for a shot in a magazine! not the same. a little soft, a little weak at best.

Remember, because you see it first on TV or magazines, does not make it so.

Have fun

there are cars everywhere, and always has been

Hot Wheels has held a couple of events in Speed KS. When you go to swipe the sign, look up at the grain elevator, report back if the the huge Hot Wheels logo is still up there...

Texas has a lot of them,It did not all start in California,Cali got published more because most of the magazine guys were from there. All of the old hot rod iron in California came from the cental US during the dust bowl,So yeah they possably have more of our hot rods. But Garlits went to California & spanked some but back in the day...Bonniville has to be the hot rod speed capital of the world. This sounds like a drunk arguing with himself in the mens room while pissing on his feet....This thread will forever be undesided...

You would be surprised at how many cars there are stashed away in san francisco. I know of at least 60 really decent cars years 1917-1975 just in the area inside the red box. there may be more. when we do the Old Car Picnic which is really just word of mouth...we draw sometimes 800 local cars.

Southern CA doesn't have the big events like other parts of the country, but any given weekend in the greater Los Angeles area you'll find car shows all over.

Everyone knows its so cal, LA. Specifically... Pomona. The world flocks here to buy, sell, and race hot rods and hot rod parts. This is where it all started. It has definitely spread everywhere and is BIG everywhere. We hot rod EVERYTHING here. So many well known hot rods have come from so cal. More than anywhere.... Washington DC doesnt have the largest population nor is it the most exciting part of our country. But it is the capital. Definitely the most significant to our country. Same with a Pomona. Its the most significant. Remember, we're talking HOT RODS.

If you're asking where the Hot Rod Capital is now, you'll never get a concensus, it's everywhere and anywhere. If you are asking where it started I'd have to say Detroit. Henry Ford was racing against the Wintons in 1901 and he and Barney Oldfield raced one of the 999 cars in '03. Henry also set a land speed record on a frozen lake with a 999 car. That's hardcore hotrodding right there!

The reason Southern California gets so much credit is that is where all the magazines were founded. All they knew to cover was their own.I was stationed in California in the 60s and didnt see that many hot hods. The mid west has a lot of cars and they are driven every day.

Yes, the midwest is known for having ALL the speed equipment manufacturers start there. They must have ALL moved to Southern California later on to be near the magazines, huh?

We'll simply ignore all the Mickey Thompsons, Barney Navarros, Vic Edebrocks, Ed Iskenderians, Eddie Meyers, Frank Kurtis', Dode Martins, Alex Xydias', Don Blairs, and the THOUSANDS of others who created the whole thing.

well this is a question that will never be anwsered the way everyone wants it to be.we all have a place where we want it to be.i was born in chicago but thats not the answer, i moved to tn. but that aint the answer either. than i moved to al. and that aint it either tho i would love to have it been in anyone of those places.but being a student of history, all kind of history is cool to me.but from what ive read, studied and just kinda put facts together. it is gonna be s cal.alot of talent stayed on there after the war, which kinda drew more talent to the area. and with the weather being good for hotrddin yr. round.it was paradice in the making.jmho.

I was 14 when I moved to SoCal in 1969 from Brooklyn New York. I was crazy about cars. Here's my observations. In N.Y. there were a couple early 60 tripower Pontiacs on my block. Pretty stock except for the tripower. With the hood down, just an old man's sorta car. On the next block, this guy Jerry had a pretty cool 64 442. The guy dating my neighbor Trudi (wow was she cute) had a black primer with blue tinted windows early 50's Chevy with a 396 and a three speed stick. It sat really high and was pretty mean looking. Now, me and my friends rode our bikes all day, every day for miles. We'd see an occasional Mach I or GTO. And when we did, we'd stop our bikes and stare for a long time. Now, I move to the San Fernando Valley in the Summer of 69. On a day to day ....I saw everything that I thought to be confined to the pages of the magazines I'd been reading all those yrs prior. Straight axle 65 GTO as a local daily driver for one lucky kid, straight axle tri-5 Chevys....Hell the cop cars were 68 Belvederes with 440 Magnums blowin through Hemi Muff.s. I saw a handfull of pretty cool stuf every day that Summer. Now, Summer's over and I start my first year at North Hollywood High School. Holy shit! The student parking lot's full of "axle" cars, Max Wedges, 409's, Cobra Jet 428's (that guy's cousin drove a brand new Boss 429 Mustang every day), name it. One guy Pat drove a 66 or 7 Chevelle with 2 4's on a tunnel rammed big block every day. Another guy had a 64-5 Chevelle with a single quad tunnel rammed 327 with 5.13 gears for his every day car. Keep in mind, we're young, in school and have part time jobs after school at best. So, these were our only cars. My first cars were pure shitholes in case you wonder. I was a couple yrs out of high school by the time I learned the art of hustling to get better rides. I got my first Vette, a flared 64 with a 365 HP 327 in 74 at age 18. From there, the rest of my cars were pretty cool. I think a couple yrs later I had my 3rd Vette, a 68 or 9 T-Top with 350/4 speed, and I worked pumping gas and light mechanical work at the corner gas station. Try that today.

Mike why move all the way to L.A. when there is tons of stuff going on here that you won't or can't attend. Good Guys was last weekend and I didn't see you there or the our Party.

Heavy Rebel was in July and your weren't there.

Shady Side Drags was in June and you weren't there.

Auto Fair Spring or Fall and I'm pretty sure you didn't go to those.

I'm not dogging on you because I know you're busy with work and it doesn't allow for you to attend. However moving to a far more expensive city/state just so you can have even more going on around you and not attend doesn't sound like a smart move. Now if you just don't like the area and need a change of pace.....by all means move away. After all that's what landed me in NC.

Austin is the same size city as Charlotte with the same amount of people. However the quality of cars is way way better IMHO when compare to Charlotte. You might want to check it out because you'd like it a lot. best of all it's the South Still!

Who cares, really? Lets all be thankful we can have hotrods wherever we are and we arent all told we have to go to one spot!!!

Then I can see all the bitchy threads about that!:
"Who was here first?"
"Who had the hottest girl in high school?"
"Who has the most traditional car?"...I could go on

I know I sound like a huge bitch but can we please get back to BUILDING hot rods and not all this petty crap like this and all the "look what I found" shit!?!

L.A. CA, because that is were the media machine was based. Writer/photog's would take a day touring the local haunts (E. Rickman/G.BAskerville/Too Tall/ect) and bingo. Ingrained in the membrane.

O.J. is correct. If he ever gets it off of his avatar and on the street it will be the only hot rod in Berryville that I know of... Mazooma1---CHILL...If you have the munchees we are sorry. Groucho,,,Can you find a publisher for that book you wrote?? I really agree with Hotrod32. The capital of hot roding is where ever you are in your ride enjoying cruising or talking to other hot rodders and the old guy that tells you that he used to have one exactly like it. Being happy smelling the gas, oil, grease and polish while taking care of your pride and joy.....Have a beer and your woman and relax !!!!!!!!

when the weather is warm, there is a cruise every night of the week around the Twin Cities in MINNESOTA.
MSRA's "Back to the '50's" in June pulls in 11,000+ pre '64 cars at the State Fair Grounds in St. Paul. 100,000+ spectators pay to come through the gates to see them. 400 car cruises every Friday in North St Paul and 500 every other Saturday in Hastings is commonplace.

I'll add this. When I moved to Socal in 69 it sure was the place to be. Now, with the many Socal Drag Strips having been closed one at a time, the internet, vastly growing popularity in the hobby, it's a lot more evenly spread out through the world than ever

Wisconsin...can't swing a dead cat without hittin' some old car, rod or whatever. We make up in the summer for the lack of nice weather during the winter. I lived in Santa Barbara for eight years and it was rare thing to see a hot rod of any kind. My 54 Chevy was the oldest car I knew of in my part of town except for the low rider crowd.

I'll tell you first were it is...it's southern California...without a doubt! Everyday I would see at least 3-4 dirty, drivingl, and all with a smile on their face in an awful hurry...lol
Even though I wouldn't say Pamona...it does have great venues for one of the biggest shows...and it's home to SoCal speedshop, but other than that, it's really not a hot rodders dream...

And now I'll add to where it ain't...diffinately not in Miami or southern Florida

I was born and raised in southern florida, and its definately not it...unless it has neon lights and a 5,000 watt stereo, thats about all you get down there...and the ocasional guy with the badly made fiberglass replica with billet everything and grey tweed interior......

I'll also add Arizona...since I've lived here for a year now, and I can probabbly count the number I've seen all year.

I second that...even if it's not true, it would still make for interesting television.

If you are going to base this on which state has the most car shows, California WINS hands down. I would also bet that there are more pre-64 vehicles registered in California than any other state.

As`far as car shows.....that's current stuff to me. Back in the 60's-70's....I think a "hot rod capitol" was more based on how many hot rods roamed the streets on a daily basis. JMO

i'm still sticking with new england. so-cal can just keep wishing it was them because they had/have all their purty magazines, press-talk, "builders", loads of money and wonderful weather year round.

Us New Englanders are the die-hards

Not familiar with the So-Cal scene but theres all kinds of rod runs and car related activity in the Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky area. I'll tell you one thing its not the NW Florida area. We have a house down there and I don't even bring my cars down there. They stay in Kentucky.

Not in my neck of the woods in Wisconsin. It is pretty dead around here. Most of the stupid scrappers took the good stuff in years ago. I've gotten many offers by scrappers to help clean my property of running and driving 50s cars. I've had people remark about how my 59 Plymouth with 36,000 miles on it in excellent shape would make a great demo car The only scene around here is how much one can expect to get from their earned income credit for a down payment on a new Kia. Oh and how many brawls one can get into on the weekend at a bar. The only thing this place might be the capital of is white trash. Did I mention my town sucks

Depends how you define it: Based numbers of vintage cars it would be the Mid West, USA - Based on our your hearts, it's where it all started and reminds the "King of Hot Rodding" Southern California with it's sunshine and year around cruising.

I'd have to say, without a doubt... LosAngeles. Especially that corridor along hwy 10.

Listen to these names... Covina, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Pasadena, Pomona, Los Angeles, Ontario, Whittier, Glendale, Burbank... etc.

Granted, Petersen Publishing didn't have to go far to record what would become our history.

But there was such a high concentration of hot rodding after WWII, that no other area would be able support a publication that became as successful as Petersen's.

Through that magazine... the rest of the United States, and eventually the world became infected.

Land Speed racing, Drag Racing, off shore boat racing, Midget Racing, BMX racing... and even though what we know as Motocross racing started in the UK, it was in Southern California where it grew.

Face it, most locomotion sports if not invented in Southern California, saw their largest gains in popularity there.

Whatever fosters this, is what makes SoCal Hot Rodding's Capitol...

Then... and because there has been so much of it passed down to other generations, now.

I've seen alot of votes for southern Cowley County but they keep spelling it wrong...SoCal. Winfield, Ks was even named after a famous car builder, Gene Winfield. That would make Cowley County the Hot Rod Capital!!!!

The Southland is it; if you still have doubts about that, you have not attended the GNRS. Or any other SoCal event for the past 60 years for that matter.

Pomona does have allot of history, You can find allot of information through researching the town, especially when it comes to the birth of the NHRA.. I Personally think its all SoCal; the nesting grounds for Hot Rods and Kustoms. The popularity exploded in the late 40's to the early 50's with Hot Rods and Kustoms and the gospel was then spread throughout the country. A good book to pick up would be Hot Rod & Customs Chronicle; talks allot about the birth and growth. But of course, respectively everyone has their own opinions and that's cool...

LA is a small part of SoCal...Pacific Coast Highway and mountain roads are plentiful.
We all avoid going into L.A.
Today it was 76 degrees, 10% humidity and blue skies.

Too many people....lots of HOT RODS.....but too many people.....probably was really nice in 1948.....but it has been down hill ever since. Very nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Maybe see you at the L.A. Roadster show in June.
