Dual Quad Fuel Lines - How was it done?

I'm going to be installing pair of 4bbl Carters on my Olds 455.

How did they do the fuel lines, say, in the 60's?

I've found a few plumbing kits, but these don't have the right look.

What aftermarket kits did people mostly use when converting to dual quads?

    Thanks :D

Here's a 57 Vette. This set-up is very clean looking.

Heres a pic of the factory 2-4's on my nail head. Original fuel lines and filter.

  5. The inline classic fuel filter really helps amplify this period look I believe and there are several of these stylrs still available and the inverted flare steel nut/brass fitting look "Factory" . Above pic is a great example.

In the 60s dual quads meant that you were serious and I don't recall seeing many dual quads with the red vinyl hose found on many of the tri-power setups of the time. This is an aftermarket dual quad setup from 1964 plumbed with steel tubing and a sediment bowl fuel filter which I love. The vinyl tubing was soon outlawed at the track so you did not see it on serious racers.

    Nice pics guys

That's a good idea. What type metal and size?

I do have another 455 on a stand that I could use as a mock up.

Some speed equipment suppliers made neat little aluminum fuel blocks (I think Eelco was one but don't buy from Marty Lackner!) They featured an inlet and two or three outlet ports and had a flange to mount to the firewall or fender well -- old time music! I'll bet you could find one on E-Pay

As I recall this was the most common aftermarket dual quad fuel block used back in the old days.

    Still available. Mr. Gasket #6150

Just regular 3/8 steel tubing, I get it from napa (a lot better quality than the Autozone stuff).
Summit has the fittings for the carter, edelbrock carbs to accept flare fittings.
I try to minimize the rubber hose as it seems to dry rot quickly anymore.

I can get you the part #

I thought it would be pretty good initially to see if it was getting fuel when firing it up before I put the permanent steel one on

Not factory, but just how I did it. Neat and simple

This is correct. While the factory used steel fuel lines, most guys installing multiple carbs would remove the factory steel lines and use the fuel block with rubber fuel lines. Remember, a home made fuel block is what put Moon Eyes on the map.

Cool ideas. Way better looking than the Edelbrock dual quad lines.

Can I use this by itself?

Moneymaker - I was thinking about on of those, but they mount to the firewall right? Mine would be like the pic below. The lines would come from the front of the eng

However you do it think about a metal gas filter rather than a glass bowl type. It's a lot safer.

That's exactly the same motor (455 Olds), intake, & carbs I have. I really liked the look, so I'm doing the same thing

I'd like to see a better pic of the new hard lines.

You can mount the fuel blocks anywhere. Does not have to go on the firewall.

We have made neat looking Z shaped brackets to bolt the fuel log or block onto the intake itself.

Ok, I took a pic this morning. Use some stainless an that I had at the shop on the carb, flaired 37 degree an, welded the line together.

Thanks for the compliments on the car, I abused it a little this weekend...he he he!

Wow, that looks nice. Good idea welding it. What size is that line?

  25. So what else is new...?:D

Can't wait to see it at a track and see what it'll do!

I finally mocked up another 455 in the basement. Glad I did 'cause I just noticed my old Competition Series Carters have the inlets on the throttle side (unlike the Edelbrocks). So I'm gonna have to sort out the linkage & return springs before I fabricate the fuel line.

Here are a few pics. In blue are the planned 3/8 fuel line & routing. That light blue thing in the middle is a fuel block that has 4 openings. The white part would be one of those little fuel pressure guages. I guess I'll need some type on banjo fitting at the carb inlets too.

Let me know what you think. Should I change the routing?

Does anyone else have a pair of carters with the fuel on the driver side?

Also, can I run a hard line all the way from the fuel pump to the carbs?

    Thx :D

cutting apart a Holley dbl pump line always works and the chrome don't look too bad either..

I wasn't going to reply on this thread because I've only got twin 2bbls but after looking at your drawing I decided to go ahead. I set mine up very similar. My fuel line is solid down to the pump. I've got a short piece of rubber hose frome the frame to the pump for flex. I couldn't find 90* fittings so I shaped the angles to the carbs with a torch. Its very important to get a quality flaring tool, as well.
