Chevy Six Banger Straight Dual Exhaust Pipe Size

    I am in the process of setting up a split exhaust for my 54 Bel Air. I am going to run dual straight pipe from a split in the original down tube until the winter. My question is what size pipe to go with? I want it to sound a bit obnoxious so I am leaning toward a smaller size as possible. I just dont' know how small is too small. I want them to be almost like a full length pea shooter exhaust...You will know the car is coming down the road.

    I know there are a few "buzzin half dozen" cruisers on here.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hey, Chief, you might want to hold up on the pipes until you can afford to split your exhaust manifold as well. A whole lot of the "buzzin' half-dozen sound" comes from separating the exhaust pulses.

    You could send your stock exhaust manifold to Mike Yoder @ Kansas Kustoms, 316-663-3256, and he can split it for $185. Better yet, send him a good spare manifold so you don't have any down time. Tom Langdon @ Stovebolt Engineering, 586-739-9601, stocks the re-pop Fentons dual manifolds, and multi-carb intakes, also.

    For a 235", you could go with 1 3/4" or 1 7/8" tube. You could run one as a straight pipe, and run a small glass pack as far forward as it will fit on the other. That will get some good raspberries when you wind out 2cd gear around town.

    I would split the manifold,and use 1 1/2" straight pipes all the way to the pea shooter tips. Good rappin' Sparky:D

    Thanks guys. I have a split manifold. I am just not putting it on the car this year. It is something that I am leaving for later.

    I have the back piece of a Clark Manifold and was going to split my stocker for the front. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and spend the $$$ now. These decisions suck.

    i recently did a ford six using 1 3/4 and 1 1/2 tubing. different sizes cause the ford is a 2/4 split! it's the sickest sounding thing you've ever heard, sick in the good way!

    I've got 1 3/4" dual on my 292 with glasspacks. Also have long tube headers which helps to get a cool sound. It sounds awesome when I romp on the throttle. 1 1/2" duals would be good on a stock 235, if that's what we're talkin'.
    Oh yeah, and definitely split your manifold or get the cast iron headers from Langdon's. I did what you're planning on my Pontiac 239 and the sound was not much improved.

    Langdon's only has Fenton's for 235's. I was thinking about just getting the kit from National Chevy for $600. Fenton's Steel Packs, pipes, etc. I know it is a lot of money but my exhaust guy is not longer around and I don't know anyone in the Philly/Baltimore area that bends exhaust tubing.

    i just had the exhaust on my dodge done by penn brake & muffler in pennsauken, nj (10 minutes east of the intersection of rt 130 & rt 168). they did decent work for a lot less than i was expecting. if you decide to go there, you should drop by for a beer as i'm only a few minutes from their shop.

    ps- pm caffiene. his dad owns a muffler shop in west philly. i was going to try him out, but decided to go with the local guys instead.

    What ford engine did you split and what were the details the exhaust on the 2/4. which had the 1 3/4 and which had the 1 1/2 pipes? did yu use the falcon/mustang 170-200 manifold?

    Kustom Chief.....I'm using Tom Langdons Williams split manifold on my 56 chevy stovebolt 235 along with 2 carter-webers on offy intake. 1and 1/2" pipes no mufflers. Sweet sound only a 6 can make. Good luck...JT

    On my '54 I have the stock mainfold split and blocked. For the pipes I used 2" pipe all the way out the back. To me thats the best sound.

    It's an old thread but still relevant. How much does pipe diameter affect the sound. I'm thinking of doing a split manifold with factory tailpipes (1 7/8") and no mufflers. Right now I have the factory single exhaust out of the back with no muffler...it sounds deep but "kinda" quiet. My other thought is a split off the downpipe to functional lakes pipes. Any thoughts?

    Smaller diameter = More "rap', higher pitch.
    Bigger diameter = Less "rap", lower pitch

    on my old 54chevy Bel-Aire 2 door sedan with a 235 block in it dualed out with 1&3/4 inch pipe and 18 inch glass packs for a cherry sound you will here it down the block and way around the corner

I have 3/3 split on my 230 flat 6 dodge . sets of car alarms , and breaks windows!!

    I could be wrong but maybe the 2:35 sounds different because it has the siamesed exhaust ports and the 292 has individual ports

    anyone else have a idea on this subject . anyone split a 292 and had good sound .is it possible I put my packs to far back . seems like when they wher straight , should have made lots of popping noise!! DSCF4128.JPG
