I've posted it on many similar threads, but once more probably won't hurt.
A friend of mine raced this car in the mid 60's. Pretty typical of the competitive 55 gassers that raced around here.

Looking very nice, like how you kept the stock quarters on the car, would love to see it painted.

Question is what were yal running? Straight axles? Stock A arms? Inner fenderwells or none? fenderwell headers or regular longtubes? Full interior or gutted? Answering these questions would really help, and i would greatly appreciate it!

I seem to remember more radiused wheelwells than stock. Remember, these were race cars first and anything that made them easier to work on was quickly adapted. Sometimes the radius job wasn't too much to brag about either.
Inner fender wells were part of the rules.
Thanks for remembering my project. It's been dead in the water while I took care of some other stuff, but I hope to get back on it soon. It's gonna be white when I finish it. (G)

Well from what i see it looks awesome, love the big tires tucked under the quarters, So im debating to radius the quarters or not, if i radius them im going to run my brand new set of polished torque thrust originals, if i dont im thinking of running painted black rally wheels in the back, and some slots runners in the front.

Started out to run in D/G with a 265 bored to 272 but had to bore block so far I ended up using a old set high compression pistons from a friends 69 Corvette 283..The car ran C/G as it was very light, damn thing ran so well I didn't want to add weight so later in the season I just replaced it with a 301 and continued on in C/G..that 301 was my favorate, 40 lbs steel flywheel, Scott fuel injection, Crane cam & heads...leave the line at 6,800 and shift at 9,000...god what a sound!!!

One of the most famous 55 Chevys was J.C. Sizemore's Goldenrod. It was 10 years ahead of it's time. It ran mostly in the southeast. The picture shows a chop top, wheelbase changes, and many more small changes.
I can't download the picture from at work, but do a search on yahoo or google using J.C. Sizemore+goldenrod

Very nice racer, but not a gasser with altered wheelbase.

57 Pontiac rear axle with 6.14 gears mounted on a spool, 7.10X8X15 M&H slicks (28" dia.) about 8,500 through the lights, not real fast but quick, as I remember..it would launch great and et at or near record.

many gas cars had "subtle" wheelbase alterations. when i was working on the Vail, Conkling and Shosie Bros. Henry J, we found that the wheelbase had been shortened to 97" from the original 100". the car ran legal in A/Gas and was never flagged in tech for violating the spirit of the rules

That is a wild looking ride, but going to advoid the chop top and the altered wheels base, would like to find a rust bucket to do that tough, would be very cool!

When I built that car it was a "RACE" car, not some wannabe gasser like they build today, it was never street driven and the ET's started in the low 13's and worked down into the low 12's.

Could you get by with fudging an 1" or so on each end? Probably, I don't think wheelbase was checked most of the time if it looked "about right". My Anglia was actually a little shorter than the 90" minimum. But it wasn't really legal and if a tech guy tossed you there wasn't much you could say.
To me, it's pretty obvious that the Goldenrod's wheelbase is modified (6 to 12"???). I think that it's blatent enought that he would have had to run Altered at a national event.

Very impressive man, i would love to throw the 5.13's and build that 301 ive always wanted to build i have the pistons and the crank, i also have 2 sets of 283 60 over pistons, could build some nostalgic race motors, but the more i think about it the more i want to enjoy this car on the street, i would like to find another car maybe one in real rough shape to make a all out race car, me and my dad have another belair hard top which would be perfect, but we have new quarters and everything for that car, so it all depends, but if i could find another sedan or a 63 nova i would love to build a little 292 or 301 for it!

Look closely at the picture, it looks to be from around '62-'63. This predates the mid-70s street freak scene by a good 15 years. No, I would not consider this a "street freak". This is a purpose built full-on drag car that never saw street action. In the early '60s to gain weight transfer for traction, many of the cars built just kept getting higher and higher.

There is a reason that in the early '60s, suddenly every drag car sat like a frog on a hot rock, and here it is: the High and Mighty. A group of young Chrysler engineers who called themselves the Ram Chargers determined that raising the car's centre of mass would produce more forward bite. Everyone copied. The Ramchargers would become even more influential as the nucleus of Chrysler's all-conquering NASCAR, drag racing, and muscle car programmes throughout the '60s.
The "High & Mighty" was the first Ramchargers project. It ran in C/A and was powered by a 354ci hemi with 392ci heads. First outing was at the '59 Nationals, held, for the first time, at the Detroit Dragway, where it set best class speed for the meet. Texas' Billy Rassmussen won the class with his Dodge hemi-powered car. The Ramchargers chose C/A because, with the exception of Billy's car, Chevys dominated the class. The Ramchargers car went on to set and reset E.T. and speed records in the class.
Finally, the car was eliminated.
No, not by anything powered by a Chevy, but by a rule book. The NHRA introduced its crankshaft height rule and then changed the pounds per cubic inch from 8.6 to 8.0. With that heavy hemi engine, the first rule essentially made the car obsolete. It needed the high centre of gravity to be competitive with the Chevy powered deuce coupes off the line. (It was the first car to be deliberately raised for more effective weight transfer. The valve covers were right up against the underside of the hood.) The second rule change allowed the Chevy powered cars to recapture the E.T. and speed records. (This is not to say that a modern Chevy engine couldn't exceed the specific output of that hemi engine built back in the fifties. But, that's a sword that cuts both ways.)

Peter Broadribb (Madbrit here on the HAMB) owns and restored the car. You might try dropping him a PM. I don't know if he checks in anymore or not.

The wheels on the front of the Gene Moody's "Moody's Garge" car are American Racing "Lemans" and are magnesium.
