Tech Week - Flames Made EASY!!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alteredpilot, Mar 2, 2011.

  1. okay...
so i've been waiting for the right time to do this tech. here it goes.

when we decided to build this 52, (for my wife) her non negotiable paint scheme was black with red sparkly flames. LOTS of red, sparkly flames. well, to be honest, i had painted a bunch of motorcycle tanks and race car panels, but never a full size car... with lots of curves... i bought a bunch of 1/4" fine line tape and started laying flames out on flat panels at the shop. then i quickly realized that i did NOT have enough practice to lay out a whole car and make it look good. i investigated my options and this is what i came up with. now... i want to remind you that this is the FIRST time i'd EVER attempted ANYTHING like this before. i'm posting this to prove that ANYONE can do this.

I was looking through the AAC catalog and saw these flame stencils. they come in different styles and sizes. i went down to Coast Airbrush in Anaheim, CA and picked up two styles which complemented each other and gave me great versatility for filling space. they are cut from a thin plastic/mylar material and are very flexible. the larger pieces are a handful and you're gonna need an extra set of hands while laying them out.

i laid the design out on the living room floor to figger out the combos and such and then took the design out to the garage, grit my teeth and got to work.

Now, i had it in my head how the layout was gonna work, so we just kinda eyeballed the first stencil into place and used some green tape to lay it up.

once in place i used a staedler omnichrome pencil to LIGHTLY outline the stencil. its like a stabilo but more like chalk. don't worry. AAC is bulletproof and you can just wipe the lines off later.

then we just kept eyeballing the different stencils into place and repeating the process.

we simply reversed the pattern side to side to get a mirror. i didn't take any measurements. we eyeballed the whole thing. there's so much going on you'd be hard presses to find any incongruities. Like Von Dutch said... you can only look at one side at a time....

so with the stencils outlined, we began to trace the pencil marks with 1/4" fine line tape...

after that was done, we masked off the rest of the car with different widths of green tape until the entire thing was sealed off air tight...

Next it was time to spray!!!! with AAC, there are no time windows or silly stuff like that to worry about. jut a quick run with the tack rag and you're ready to go.

I'm using a durablock 007 with a 1.2mm tip and SATA RPS cup system.

    paint....

the base here is AAC flame red mixed 9:1 with 4011 reducer with cosmic sparkle red (it acts like a pearl).

it goes on in dust coats until coverage is achieved.

  2. then that is followed up with hot rod sparkle red and hot rod sparkle white (micro flake. the red is red. the white picks up what ever the base color is.) mixed in clear base and reduced. same application. i usually only make three passes for effect. i don't want to over saturate the base.

once everything has been properly cured.... its time to unwrap the present! you can already see the pearlescent effect coming thru!

next is clear coat. i used Virtus HS clear.

    SHINY!!!

    stripe the flames...

    deliver for show!!!

While the finished product and your paint work looks really nice, I can't get behind pre-fab flames. Sorry.

I'll admit, when I first started looking at the photos I thought "oh no, not another flat black with red flames paint-job"...but then...the last photo is just KILLER!

Congratulations on a beautiful paint job!
