    Update #2 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=555922

UPDATE #3 The buck is moving right along and as suspected the front of the car was the most complicated to design. I got stuck on the grill for a few days because I need a large opening to get enough airflow to the radiator plus I want to run fog lights behind the grill. An oval opening is to plain and I really don’t want it to look like a Cobra. My friend Ralph came over and asked if I had looked at any Cunningham’s which I hadn’t. I Found a picture of one online and really like the shape of the grill so I stole the design. After the grill opening was done I got the outside of the fender and the shape of the hood bucked fairly easy.
But then came the challenge of having to transition from the hood to the fender. I had made a few temples out of cardboard and had problems adjusting for the uneven rise and fall of the fender to the hood. Then on Thursday night Kirk came over and it took both of us well over an hour volleying ideas back and forth to solve the geometry problem that let the fender drop into the hood evenly. Once we got the concept it only took a half hour to lay it out. (Thanks Kirk). The next day I transferred all the temples to wood and worked on the transition from the grill to the lower front fenders. I probably have eight hours left in the buck then the task of aluminum shaping can begin.
As you can see in the pictures I’m going to need a blister to cover the Magneto and Webbers. I could go aluminum but I’d rather make it out of Plexiglas . If you have info on how to blow plexi please feel free to post it on here Thanks!<p>[IMG]

Looks great! Will it have body work between the driver and passenger (as in a D type) or is the central piece of wood to line things up?

Bucks always remind me of those wood dinosaur skeleton puzzles.

    Looking really good Matt.

Here are a couple of good links for info on thermo forming acrylic sheet (plexiglas). My guess is that "free forming" will work for your application depending on the complexity and depth of the shape you want. Don't be overwhelmed by the industrial aspect of the attachments, you can use a heat gun or even a home oven to heat the sheet depending on the thickness and shape. The tooling can be really simple.

So will you have a removable panel over the passenger well?

Thanks for showing this work - super exciting thread.

this may help on the bubble forming -- how they make a bubble top???

and you may want to look at ferrari 250 gto (which has a nice grill) and the Ferrari breadvan (which has a nice plexiglass bubble in the hood).

    This car will be SWEET!

    I still think you're nuts!

Yeah, the last bits for the front fenders were one of those geometry problems that you need two brains for. Once we figured it out it was one of those "duh" moments that seemed simple in hindsight.

Wow . Wanted to build something like this for years . I've got about a million classic car magazines at home , and have been dreaming of a hemi powered 50's euro style sports racer . Cant wait to see this done !

    It just keeps getting better!
2011 is going to be the best year yet here on the HAMB. Quite a few top level builds are in the advanced stages, and the quality and imagination of the builders to pull new tricks out of their hats never fails to amaze me. :D

Cant wait to see this one take shape. Consider shooting video when you start bangin' aluminum over the buck. I'd enjoy seeing that very much.
