    Hi guys

Did my intro a while ago, said I would post some pics of my 36 ford project when I worked out how to post images. Here goes.

Started off with a 36 flatback sedan that I bought just around the corner from where I live. Started building it as a sedan, however I have always longed for a 36 roadster or phaeton. Decided that I would take the plunge and cut the roof off and build a very traditional phaeton, but I will lengthen the doors to same length as a Tudor and do it as a 2 door. A mate of mine gave me a right side top of a rusty roadster door, this has made it much easier as I now have a template for the other side and the cowl. If any one has a spare L/H Roadster Door I would be interested in purchasing one as it would save me a lot of metal forming.

The car is running a 50 Mercury Flathead with 2 jet rochester card. Engine has been mated to a four speed single rail gearbox from an aussie falcon and diff is also falcon mounted on chassis engineering springs. Front end is 4 inch dropped axle with shortened 37 wishbone.

Windscreen on car is from Carter Components in Queensland, truly is a work of art cast in one piece from aluminium.

I have attached a few photos (I hope) of progress so far and will post more as I get the chance.

    Thanks Guys

Jimmy, I had already subscribed to the thread re building the roadster from coupe and sedan. I have to do my cowl a bit different as I am installing a narrowed 53 customline dash complete with original radio etc. I want to still be able to bolt dash in & out. I still need to either install a second pod for clock in the dash or centre up existing clock to balance out dash. I thought if I could find a small early style tacho, it might look good in a second pod next to existing clock.

Did a bit more work tonight, finished the front upper section of inner door frame and cut front door and extended 6 inches. Just need to make sections to fill the gaps.

I will put up some photos of doors as they progress.

Forgot to mention Jimmy, love the lift off roof, but also like the idea of folding top. I have a mate who has a genuine 35 phaeton, who said we can use his hood bows as a pattern to make new ones.

Does any one have photos of 35 or 36 phaetons with good lift off roofs.

  7. Damn I'm going to build the same thing but am using a tudor slantback. I'll be modifying the tudor doors and will be making a roof like the So cal plating truck..

This thread is off to a great start. Looks like a fun project and it should be a very cool body style.

The Cal Plating is a favorite, too.

Quick update, didn't get as much done on the weekend as I had planned, decided to clean the shed first. Did get the quarter tack welded, need to finish the front edge and then complete door.

Will put up some better shots when done.

Quick update. Got a bit done last week end. Fitted up the front panels to ensure body mounted square on chassis and run a centreline through the vehicle to ensure measurements were correct from side to side as per mates 35 phaeton.

Have now started finish welding the R/H Quarter panel. Also finished mods to rear door Pillar, Just need to get some burst proof locks now to complete.

Will then move on to finishing door before doing all the inner supports.

Got my burstproof locks fitted up. Have started doing inner supports for Quarter and Door. Built seat belt mounts into inner quarter panel structure. Also extended the inside top of the door so that it blends into the dash better. Just need to make the skin for upper part of the inside door, so that I can mount inner handles etc.

Looking great ! I have a question though ...on lots of projects I see from guys in Oz the structural steel most guys use is painted the same shade of blue the 1st few times I just figured it was used steel but now I am not so sure lol !

  26. Thats a preservative paint thats on steel, mainly tube when bought from the local steel merchants, dunno if its a particular brand or what type of paint, its just there............lol...............andyd

  27. Blackroad, compliments on the work so far, will look a real treat when finished......btw you asked about a small tacho, I got a small 2 &1/2" Speco brand tacho from the local Supercheap, its in a chrome cup, black face, white letters, adjustable orange needle, dunno if this pic shows it well............anyway really like the car......andyd

    Hi guys

Been a bit slow over the last week or so, just cutting some rust from pillars, finished off and tacked the new section for the top of the tub and starting to form the left hand side door from my old four door sedan door. Also formed the new edge for the door jam to the quarter panel and got it tacked into place. Hope to get some more done during this week.
