Default Let's see your old license plates & toppers

Picked up a 1927 British Columbia plate and an old Standard Oil license plate topper recently on E-Bay.
Correct me if i'am wrong, but from the little research i have done, it seems the Standard Oil topper was given to customers to try out the "new" leaded version of their gas. Lead was not in gasolene originally and Standard Oil wanted to see how it would perform in everyday use. The Topper has a registration number stamped into it to register that topper to a certain customers car.
I'am guessing late 1920's this test was conducted?
If anybody has more info on this i would be interested to know.

Here's my California Black Plate for my California '57 Dodge D500...

It's an Original Plate, and I was lucky enough to get one that had my "JK" initials in it. (See the Dodge in my Album Section.)

A gennie that I paid 15 bucks for...yeah it was a while ago.

A reproduction that I painted. Originals just cost too much for my wallet.

A new topper that never existed back in the day but it looks cool.

I hate to show this one because it always starts a "I want one" todo. It is my favorite and only 5 exist in the world...And I have one!!! nah nah nah! just kidding! It is my favorite for obvious reasons. No there will be no more made. That was the agreement when we bought ours. sorry but that was the deal.

Doesn't that count as a bottomer?

I'll have to go snag a pic when it warms up a bit.

Unrestored Kansas Tag and repop cast from original topper. Maybe some of you older midwesterners will recognize the topper.

I think there were only two made of the one I've got. WhizzerRick made them. Gotta be at least 5 or 6 years old. Can't remember exactly. He was one talented dude. Wish he'd hang out here more.

Yeah I missed out on yours so I bit the bullet and snipped mine.

Yeah I'm a great fan of his talents. I always marveled at his posts.

My rarest is probably my "Redskins" tag topper with a football player passing the ball. It was a Houston Tx high school I guess. I milled the Houston off of it so my local Redskin fans will be jealous. Yeah they suck right now but I'm not a bandwagon frontrunner type of fan. High schools couldn't have sold a lot. The DAMN football broke off in shipment.

That one is NOS. I've had it as for a while, part of a whole early to late 50's NHRA collection I was putting together.

Here's one that I run on the front of my '34 Coupe. It was sold for $1.00 in the 1950's by civic groups like the Lions Club as a fundraiser. They were made by the WV Prison Industries and used the same blanks as the regular plates.

Here are the two that are on my Safari and a couple of not-too-real plates that I made up.They are not stamped;just painted to look three dimensional.

EDIT:In the group shot picture, the only real plate is the bottom one.

Some really cool ones here

While this one is kinda weak by comparison, I found it in my grandparents garage as we were preparing to tear it down. These were fairly popular in the 60's. Although the original message was more directed towards forest fires, it takes on a new meaning in this century.

Heres a 1929 i will use on my 29 Chevy someday. The drive slow was made in Canada in the 50's. The m/c tags were found on a barn wall they are 35,36,37. I don't know why they are sideways. It took me 4 tries to get them loaded.

That was the agreement when we bought ours. sorry but that was the deal.[/QUOTE]

Here are just a few of ours:

for Doctors:

Florida toppers:

1958 (???) GM show car ??? plates

^ these came from an Estate in the Pontiac Michigan area some time ago. No info was offered when we purchased them ... we iinitially figured they were for the Bonneville dream car, but because they say Coupe, they may have been used when the 58's came out, they are heavy metal and were chromed

Here's a near mint pair of old '51 (Territory Of...)Hawaii plates I want to run on my '51 Chevy. Unfortunately, the local DMV doesn't let us run vintage tags like they do in California.

Nice, those are two very rare toppers. I used to have 4 original 1930's NOS devil head toppers, but I couldn't afford to keep them anymore!!! Here is my favorite, found it in a old mans barn stash of parts. It fitted perfectly on the PRC roadster run. Oh yeah, the plate is all original and is also registered to the car too..

Yes he did make 5 and only 5. They were auctioned off on the HAMB to raise money to support the HAMB. He is an artist.

The Flyers is an old hotrod club from the 30s I believe that was revived. I was asked to join.

I hated the Flyers. They always beat our Capitols back in the day. Now I hate the Penguins for the same reason. We whipped them in the winter classic this year

We have this on the front of our '47 Mercury:

I have complete sets of Jersey plates from '45 to '51. My dad kept them each year. I was born in '47 and we have every reason to believe this was the plate that was on the car that brought me home from the hospital.

The topper is a reproduction of one issued in the early fifties and was used as a fund raiser for the Telluride Rotary club. The plate is an original, unrestored truck plate.

I found the same topper in an old shed on my property, and did a little research on it. I found this newspaper ad from the May 8, 1936 Cass City Chronicle, Cass City, Michigan:

I had one I gave to a friend (I should of kept it) it was the Statue of Liberty and had a place for a light bulb where the torch would be, it was made of tin and painted.

Don't have room for a topper on my Panel Truck. But these are the YOM tags I have been running for the last five years.

I've been running this tag on the '37 since last summer. The mounting holes from the previous owner are just a bit crooked, and the plate is bent. Matches the bent, rusty rear bumper perfectly.

I bought this because it was cheap and it will always remind me of the great times and good finds at the Beehive flea market at the spring show. It's strictly a wall hanger. I miss that show. I'm guessing that they were to show that you paid the city tax. That is the way it was in northern Va. with their county tag toppers. Nobody like them!

Try searching eBay for "license plate toppers"; there are lots of them there.

Got this one from a former 'shine transporter who cast a few from one of his originals. The rear shelf of a 64 500XL has the perfect spot to mount such a thing. Also displaying a "NOS" Virginia plate from 64.

I found the 48 truck plate at the dump when I was in high school, the 34 plate came off my model T fender. The plate and plate holder were crumpled up into a ball. With a hammer, crescent wrench, a vice and a little patience and I was able to save them.

Here's 3 motorcycle tags i pulled off a barn wall . Note the big hole in the top center of the tags. I think they used the biggest spike they could use to hold the tags on the wall.

No pictures but I have a nice cast aluminum topper that says HOUSTON "Bright Spot of the Nation" taken from a 42 Ford Coupe in the woods of east Texas.
My other is a cast "Ruptured Duck" GI service pin about 3" across.

Not sure this is exactly a plate but..

In 1944 in Ontario plates were not issued due to WW2, only a sticker.

This is not a reprint but an original in our possession for 40 years
Pretty rare to have never put on a windshield

It's been quite a while since I've posted anything, but I recently picked up a plate topper for my '50 Suburban.

I don't know any history on it, but being a Freemason I thought it was perfect.

I think you are asking about my topper that is an original. It was given away during WW2 for a 100 dollar purchase of war bonds. I am lucky to roll with it. Bonneville bugs and tumbleweed are legit and earned. 34 copper plate from Az that I will run on my 5W coupe that I am building(slowly) Topper is from the famous Stadium High School(look it up) that is in my hometown of Tacoma Wa. My grandmother graduated in 1934 . How fitting. My dad in 56, uncles in 58 and 70. I will sport it proudly. What are the chances of finding a nice plate like this with a great number letter designation. I am very happy with it.

Here's the unrestored one on my 26, and and another unrestored original that will go on my 32 if I ever get it done. Already have it registered under this plate.

The '56 Penna. tag and topper were on my Plymouth coupe when it was parked in Sept. '56. The '36 Ohio year of manufacture plates are now on the car along with this Keystone topper that was in a box in the trunk. The '32 Ohio yom plate is unrestored.

I've got one of those too. It's not aluminum though. Didn't know they made them any other way?

Here's my Arizona YOM plates for the '57 Windowed Delivery and the '49 Fleetline. The 49 plate is cool as it is waffled aluminum, something several states did with their aluminum plates to keep them from bending so easily. Of course, you know what the toppers are. And I'm looking for a distinctive frame that fits the '49 plate, but they are tough to find in that size.

A friend gave me this '52 Plate a couple of years ago.

And this '58 High Point NC tax strip plate was in my glovebox when I got my car. There were some pay stubs in there too for "Max Calloway" (If I remember correctly) from the late 50's - early 60's in High Point also. I checked with the DMV awhile back and the only record showing prior to me was in Alabama in the early 2000's.

I have another 1958 High Point plate in near mint shape, but no pics of it at the moment though.

Found this at a junk yard. It matches my 64 Indiana plate for my cyclone.

Here's some of my collection, plus one old beach sticker on the windshield of my '37 Ford wagon.
