Default Tom McMullen and his '32 Roadster

This story could fill a book, but here are some visual highlights of the amazing life of Tom McMullen's '32 Ford Roadster. In the early 60's Tom was a transplanted east coast rodder who switched from closed customs to an open Roadster once in the proper weather in Southern California. Tom bought the car from Don Hudson as a black flathead powered Deuce Highboy. The car had been used for publicity shots for Nick Adams who played "The Rebel" Johnny Yuma, and it was Jr.’s car in 1955 on "The life of Riley". It was rented out to the studios for a Lassie episode on the dirty good for nothing Hot Rodders.

Once Tom purchased the nice black '32 Hiboy he started racing and modifying it to fit his wild personality. He first through his connections in the L.A. Roadster club painted it with one of the first green metal flake paint jobs while fellow club member Dick Skritchfield painted his similar Deuce in red metal flake. The early paint formula was lumpy and quickly faded and became splotchy. Tom went back to black and added the trademark Moon tank up front, but this time added a set of wild Ed Roth taped flames which Tom sprayed himself.

Tom's wild antics and competitive nature were well known within the L.A. Roadster club. The car would see duty as a street racer, drag racer and Bonneville machine.

This would quickly put the car on the cover of Hot Rod in 1963. The car was seen in multiple magazines as Tom became a talented magazine free-lancer.

Album covers were the perfect place for the high-impact hot rod. Tomís Hot Rod was seen on the cover of the Astronauts album, and more album covers would follow. Eventually Tom lost interest and sold the Roadster that had served him well for a decade.

By the end of the '60s Tom was looking for a new thrill and found it in motorcycles and eventually opened his own shop and started Street Choppers magazine. As a business move Tom started sister publication Street Rodder.

This would rekindle his interest in rods and would bring him full-circle to hot rods where he would build multiple replicas of his original roadster after selling the first one to keep his business running.

After years of abuse and modifications that made the car hard to recognize the car was meticulously restored by Roy Brizio.

Most recently Tom's old Dodge truck was seen on E-Bay.

Didn't he build a twin engined Austin at one time, twin SBC's? Wonder where that ended up.

He was a builder in the best sense...only ran into him once, cruised to Burbank with some Pasadena roadsters, early '60s, ran into Tom and his buddies, his roadster was then green metalflake, he challenged me to street race, but the built 327 with 6-97's just looked too stout for my car, so I backed off and headed back to Pasadena...
