does anyone have an idea if a cummins diesel would fit in a 1946 1.5 ton engine bay.
i ask because i am buying a 46 and want to drop the cab on a 1997 dodge 1 ton chassis with a cummins.\
im afraid the radiators and condenser may take up too much space and the engine may be too long.

any help, suggestions, past experiences or wisdom would be appreciated.

Hmmm, if it were me, I would grab some measuring instruments and do some close inspections of the diesel components, especially the radiator, my guess is you would have to do some major fabricating to get the 41-46 sheet metal to wrap around the radiator of any diesel, just because its shape is so different than the 41-46, my guess is that if you could find a radiator that was more upright than wide, and provided correct cooling capacity, that would be ticket. Might check with a radiator manufacturer once you know what the dimension are, consider that the hood of the 41-46 narrows considerably at its front whereas the dodge is hugely wide. This fact will force you to have a taller thicker radiator. I would say its very doable, if you have the shop and tools, and you would have valuable insight and experience once you complete the mission, "should you decide to accept it"

thanks novadude, i was afraid the radiator would be too wide. i almost bought the dodge last night but felt the need to wait. i will have to start measuring. im not afraid to tackle the project, i have the workplace and skills, i just dont know if i want anymore extra work. i may just go with a chevy 1 ton with a v-8.

No, it won't fit. I've tried that one and it looked like crap. The front track of the Dodge wheels is so much wider than the 46 that the wheels stuck way out and just plain looked stupid. The turbo also has major clearance issues. I suppose if you removed the hood sides so that the turbo could squish out, you could also notch the fenders for the turbo. Also, a Cummins is pretty long and you would have to have it sitting in your lap to fit without it shoving through the grille. But, I'm sure it could be done with money.

A short bed 2 ton ex-mobile home mover.
Probably was military surplus.
Has a huge PTO winch in the back.
In 1973 I put a 235 in it for my father-in-law to pull a dozer.
The picture is from about 5 years ago when I sold it.
