Default how to build your own U-Fab multi carb intake?

with the prices of multi carb intakes it realy makes me wonder why more people dont just make there own?

in therorie after seeing quite a few "u-fab" style ones i must be missing something they are so simplistic looking and yet not many are seen.

some tubing a saw and a welder what more is there to it?

good tech-o-matic potential.

you wanted to tech info heres an opertunitie to contribute what you know

what are you tips and thoughts?

An old car buddy of mine made his own unique intake to mount a Holley four barrel on a Corvair flat six back in high school out of tubing in welding shop...looked kinda cool and worked out well for him!!!

Harlan did one here a couple years ago.
He hammerformed the runners out of sheet steel, put it all together with a MIG.
Hopefully someone saved some pics.
SamIyam made a 2x2 intake by milling the top off an Aluminum 4bbl intake, machining up a new top from solid Aluminum,TIG welded the top on,then dressed the welds so it looks like a production piecs.

It would be easy enough to weld a divider down the middle of the single plenum,so it would work more like the first design.

Nuttin stoppin ya, me boy....go for it. Oh, sure. They're always going to be the nay-sayers that will say a novice couldn't possibly make anything that could perform well..prove 'em wrong Tim.... like Harlan.......just do it.

i plan on it

lol 270 for a 4x2 manifold yeah right lol

i need flow information, like texture wise

any one save the "harlan files"

?

prolly look like that second one but with shorter runners i would supose.

maybe make the top plate bolt on with a gasket so you could switch the amount of carbs you want and keep the same intake.

just switch out the plates, one with a pad to mount a 4 barrel, one for 4,6,8 ect.

there any reason you couldnt run 4 carbs in a diamond shae instead of parellel other then a linkage night mare?

i figure run the single front and backs as primarys and the two middle ones as secondarys

???

ben thinking about this for a few years

the price tage just made me say yes

I had a 200 ford six. Thre guy I bought it from had cut the stock manifold(it's part of the head casting) Had it milled, drilled and taped. He built the 4 bbl manifold. It was a little crude but it worked. Don't know what the hell I was thinking when I sold that motor.

Dr J.....yup. I have absolutely no idea what the jetting is or how it's gonna work on the street...the engine was in a roundy-round racer 38 ford coupe....prolly does ok when it's wide open..we'll see
Tim, the diamond shape could be tricky to run linkage to but so is the staggered 4 and 6 two barrel setups. Mine looks like a big "H" with a carb shaft at each corner of the H..

After sitting in too many mind wasting meetings it occured to me the profile on the supports/legs of office furniture would make a great manifold 'log'. Below is my lame attempt in PS to create the uni-log manifold

Aero profile courtesy of meeting room furniture ... flat plate welded to the top for carb mounts, runners out of more office furniture, HAMB logo proudly displayed.

At the rate I am going the tech post is a long ways off

later,
papa al

Give it a week or so. I have a reasonably secret Hemi intake in progress. I'll post a full write up as soon as I get it done

Think many HAMBers may have seen my intake already, but for those who haven't it was made on thecheap. It runs on the centre carbs with the outer ones coming in progressively. I was a little concerned that the pipework (hidden under the stainless sheet) had pretty poor "flowing " characteritics as I didn't have a pipe bender and just pie cut and welded the pipe. At the moment the end carbs are blanked off 'cos they're junk. It runs OK for now on just the centre ones that run thru short straight pipes, but they're junk too ! (One "sucks" more than the other -and not a shared plenum), Still need to sort 4 new carbs before I can really know how well it will perform !

If you are building it for the street, I'd stay away from the big plenum like a tunnel ram. The smaller log tube style will keep the velocity up for better real life street performance. They look cooler too. IMHO

I got an issue of Drag Racer magazine that has some cool pics of "High and Mighty", the Ramchargers first car. They did basically what you are, but used reinforced radiator hose at their runners! That way they could "tune" it to whatever length ran the best... really good stuff!
