    Day 1

I left Dallas a little late. Didn't get to leave the shop until about 8:30, and got stuck in traffic for nearly an hour. Of course, that caused me to run out of gas a half block from the gas station. Thankfully I had a gallon can with a little in it.

Had lunch in Childress, TX, and set out to Flat-top Bob's (Owens Salvage) to check out his new barn. About 10 miles from Wellington, I blew the tube out of the left rear tire at around 75mph. Pretty hairy getting it stopped, but managed to get it to the shoulder without ending up in the ditch or destroying the tire.

I put on the spare that I managed to cram in the trunk, and limped it to Bob's. He had a tube lined up for me there in town, and the guys there had it mounted and balanced in no time.

The freshly painted letters on that Firestone were toast, and Bob let me use some of his One Shot to re-letter it while I was at his barn. In case you haven't heard, Bob Owens in the genuine article. I can't thank him enough for his help.

After that I just watched the miles pass through the windshield. It was hot as two foxes fuckin' in a forest fire until I got to New Mexico. Leaving Clayton, NM after stopping at the Dairy Queen, the road turned to glass and I got to watch one of the most dramatic sunsets I've ever seen. It was bitchin'.

Hit a gnarly thunderstorm before Raton, complete with lightning and rain blowing sideways into the window.

I'm now in Colorado Springs, CO getting ready to depart for Day 2. I'll update this post when I get time.

    -Brian

hey brian, not to side track yu or anything, but can yu tell me, are you running a possie track diff ? and if so do you not think running down the hiway with different size rear tires will harm the spider gears, as they will be churning at different speeds ?
this is a dilemma that's been plaguing me.
    thanks ..

Man you have my envy! My '48 and I used to pack up on July 1st every year and head north to western Washington till Sept.1. Job has changed so that's not the deal any more, stuck in Phoenix for the last two summers. I sure miss the drive though! I think I read where you are coming back through Bonneville, if you are, come back down via some two laners in Utah and the western side of Colorado. Look for Highway 6 south out of Provo through Helper and Price Utah, catch the freeway again at Greenriver, cruise into Grand Junction Colorado, and head down 50/550. Coolest drive ever, period. Dumps you out at Durrango, Colorado, and down to Farmington, New Mexico. A bit longer, but Oh Man, what a drive! I've done it in the Plymouth several times, it's worth it. Oh, killer pictures! Be safe and enjoy!
