The Cain '32 Roadster build

So I decided to make a build thread for the roadster. I had the car almost to a roller point as in my avatar but a good friend of mine made me an offer on the rolling chassis for his upcoming project so I decided to cut it loose to him, I was also in somewhat of a financial bind at that time and wasn't sure what was even going to happen with the '32. I was trying to get through school, had other projects that needed time and money and the '32 was put to the back burner. Come December, my mom was diagnosed at that time with terminal cancer and only given an initial 2-3 months to live. It was a huge hit and crushed me pretty much being only 23 at the time and getting that news. I told her I would sell all the '32 parts I collected over the past 2 years and help her out, she wasn't having that what so ever and told me to get the car done so she could have a ride in it as she knew it meant a lot to me. She started improving health wise and the doctors found out that her cancer was caused by the BRCA1 gene, a hereditary cancer that is passed on, luckily they're able to treat it better, but I may also be at risk for it as well now. Well February comes round and a few guys and myself head to the Rolling Bones open house in New York. We brought a lot of parts with us and I decided to have Keith and Ken build a roller for the '32. It was a big decision at the time, but with graduating in my last semester at school and being at home, I decided to pull the trigger and do it, and now come August, the frame is ready and I couldn't be happier. My mom is now HOPEFULLY cancer free, she went in for her last chemo treatment today, they say all the cancer cells are dead, thanks God! She wants to see the car on the road just as much as I do, I think. Soooo anyhow on to the pictures I have right now on the computer. When I get to the shop tomorrow I'm going to get a lot more. The deuce is going to be powered by a 291 Desoto hemi with 10.5:1 slugs, ported 330 heads, a solid roller cam from Donnie Johansen of Contrera's Cams, and topped off with a Weiand 4x2 setup with for 97's. The body is at the metal shop right now, we're blending the tops of the doors in with the cowl to look more streamlined like a '36 roadster cowl section, all done in metal and lead. Anyhow, that's it for now, I'm excited to finally get rolling on the car, hopefully get it all mocked up in the next couple weeks.

 

Good News all round it seems like, especially on your Mom. That Chassis looks great, and that Weiand intake will look Killa sitting on top of that Hemi.

Chassis looks good! My intake has a hole in the same spot on the runner, weird. More importantly, good news about your momma.

 

Here's some more pictures from what I have around the house for the car. Figured I'd throw them up on here.

All cloth wiring, terminals, cloth tape for the wrapping springs, wax covered lacing for the wire ties, glass fuse panel, everything from Rhode Island Wiring Service Inc and Restoration Supply Co, both 2 VERY great places! I highly recommend them!









Box of seals, dove tails, strikers, horn button, shift knobs, pretty much everything to finish off the body, all from MAC's and The Hot Rod Company, 2 great companies.



The only Hemi parts I have here at the moment, all the rest is at the machine shop, the Hot Heads adapter plates and parts to make the plug wires, I still need to order cloth covered wire for that.



Here's the Scintilla/Vertex mag, I sent it out to Fuel Injection Enterprises and had Spud Miller freshen it up, it looks amazing now and packs a PUNCH! He sends a dyno chart of the specs of when he got it and how it ships out, GREAT work!





A guy on Epay is remaking the Hurst S10 shifters. I'm using a World Class T5 with a s10 tailshaft housing, so I picked one of these up. I'm adapting a swan neck early Ford shifter on it. From the interior no one will know a difference.



A small order from the guys at OTB, for some trim rings, sealing gaskets, mounting studs and new marker lenses for the Guide 682-C's. Very nice products!



Finally for tonight, the Stewart Warner Wings 8k tach, I have the oil pressure, water temp, fuel level and amp gauges as well, but they're at John Wolfe Co getting freshened up and gone through.

on the rear of the frame above the "C" why did they leave the plate exposed above the rails?
what are you plans for steering?

Wow shocked to hear all the news about your Mom. I'm glad it has turned out for the better. When we were hanging out at Charlotte in April I didn't know you had all this heavy stuff on you. Glad things are going good now! That thing is looking awesome! Thanks for the cool pics too. Very inspiring!

Real quick... I noticed you mentioned you will be running cloth wire for the plug wires. The Rod Company sells what you need if the RI place doesn't have it. When you get a chance, can you list out what you're using for the boots and terminals for the ignition wires for that hemi? I need to make some as well.

That is incredible hearing about your mothers strength and recovery. She sounds like one tough lady with her head on straight(hence the desire to see your '32 done).

It looks like a great start. It doesn't get any better than having a Rolling Bones '32 frame to have as a foundation for the rest of your build. Keep us posted on the progress on your '32 and on your mothers health. God bless her.

Interesting thread, hope that your Mom continues to improve, and that you don't get it...,I like your chassis, love those friction shocks...really old school. You are getting the good parts together, the DeSoto is one of my favorites. It's cool that your picturesque shop opens onto a road for "testing."

 

Needs the"signature" holes in the axle and wishbones !

 

I remember your other thread on this car, quite a while back... I'd wondered how the project was coming along. Glad to see you are still plugging away at it --- and with an awesome new chassis!!

Thanks for the kind words guys, I'll pass them along to mom tomorrow! She's in the hospital for the last round of chemo. It's some nasty shit, they keep her there to monitor her since she has a bad reaction to one of the medications, but it's nothing she can't beat! She's a fighter, she kicked breast cancer in '82 and she's kicking it's ass again in '10!

Cadillaccoffin, the plate is just to stiffen it and add support that's all. I have to raise the floor over it, but it's alright. Steering is all made by the Bones guys as well, Schroder box with early style Ford sector shaft mated on and '32 pitman arm.

Dog_Patch - I have a good way of masking things up and try to hide them, it's not the best move, but it helps. Hopefully I'll have the car down there next year!

Scooter, the boots, terminals and insulators are all made by Taylor, still readily available. The inner boots come with terminals and they're part number 44500, "Hemi inner boot, for 44000" and the insulators that go in the tubes around the boots are part number 44000, "Hemi tube, O.E. type black" Hope that helps.

Racemad55 - I thought about the holes in the bones and axle, but I wanted to keep it all solid and simple on this car. When I saw Richie's 3-window up there at their shop, (the heavy patina'd one), it was undrilled as well, I think it gives it even more of an old timey look. It was a tough call though on to drill or not to drill. This car won't be louvered much either. I'm going to use a Rootlieb hood since we stretched the frame 2" in the hood area, and since the hemi has such a wide profile, I'm going to build the 'blister' area for the valve covers into the louvers. More to come on that later. But no louvers on the decklid or hood tops... for now.

An incredible looking chassis for sure and I'm so happy that you mom is Cancer free again. My mom had breast cancer when I was in High school and that was definitely a hard blow to take.

All the parts looks great and I can't wait for you to bring it down to our party next year!!!!

Count me in then!!! When ever I get everything settled and squared away, I'd like to start my own '32 5w powered by the almighty Chrysler!!

Update time. I met of with the Bones guys on their way to Bonneville in Dayton and picked up some goodies, A FRAME! It looks AMAZING in person, I love it, can't wait to getting rolling on it! It's been SOOOO damn hot in the shop though with heat indexes during the day well into the 100s. Earlier in the day, Dave and Ron from Culver City Quickchange met up with me in Columbus OH, also on their way to Bonneville to make a special stop to deliver my rear end to me. They do TOP NOTCH WORK! Hands down the only shop i will EVER use to do my rear end work! They gave me a stack of pictures of the whole assembly process to ensure that all work was done right. The wear pattern they established on the ring gear was phenomenal! I'll scan a few pictures in and get them up. They showed me a special box they had with them, low and behold a NOS Halibrand POLISHED quickchange center section, RARE Torrence CITY rear cover, and differential that was still done the old Ford way by Halibrand, a beautiful piece! The box still had 1977 newspaper in it! It's for sale, if anyone is interested hit Dave up on here, dgasbag. I'm hoping to get the chassis going soon and get the plumbing done. The body should be back this week, so stay tuned! Anyway, on to the pictures!

Here's something aesthetic I wanted to keep. I took '40 rear hubs and machined the rear section off so I could slide them on over the drums and between the wheels to retain the old axle look.

 

Nice trick with the axle ends..that is the type of work I like!, clever stuff that no one else will notice..

 

I love all the Nostalgic parts you have on your car.Elbow shockers,Split radius rods,cool.
I have 36 Radius rods for mine,and a forty buggy spring for my 32 Roadster, but got talked out of using them.Ended up with Jag coil overs and 4 Bar rear.I am still happy though to have it all done and welded in.

The Hemi has got such a wide V looks like all heads in there thats why they are cool.

I'm running a 1957, 371 Olds Tri carb set up in mine.Old Skool is cool.Cant have enough carbies on it the 4x97's will look great on yours.
