Thought I'd post some pictures of the block, crank, etc -- to give you an idea as to what this engine is all about. Until I got my hands on this beast, can't say that I ever had one apart before . . .
1) Block: It was the first monoblock casting from Cadillac - is strange in some areas. It does not have a valley area with the typical cast lifter bores. Instead, it is open and there are four separate 'lifter blocks' that block into the valley area. The pan rails extend past the normal main-cap parting line -- like a 426 hemi or Donovan 417. The entire main cap sits below the pan rail. All intake and exhaust passages exit at the top of the block - makes the ports a LOT better than a flathead Ford (we get 'quick way' exhausts in the FlatCad for free ).It came with large valves from the factory -- about 1.85 intakes and 1.65 exhausts (don't have the details in front of me). We're going to hog this sucker out and run somewhere around 2.05 titanium intakes and 1.75 titanium exhausts. Here is a shot with some sample stainless valves of this size: Here is a shot of one of the lifter blocks - on the bench and in the engine: 2: Crankshaft - a huge 90 pound monster . . . with two large 'bolt on' counter-weights. The stock stroke is 4.5" and the journals are huge. This will be replaced with a custom Crower billet crankshaft -- with BBC journals, BBC snout and Ford FE flywheel flange. 3) Rods - Due to the size of the crankshaft and the 3.5" bore, the rods have a side mounted cap (like many diesels) - the length is 8.75" - with pressurized pin oiling. We don't have much choice but to make our custom rods the same length, but we should be able to fit a BBC style big-end through the bore. That is all for this evening . . . need to complete the stud girdle while I wait for some parts I need to complete the crank and cam designs . . . Enjoy!

Bored&Stroked, I know from all the phone calls, and DOZENS of emails, that there has been a ton going on with the engine.Progress has been good, and it's a very exciting part of the build. Helluva job you're doing! I think, when we release all the engine mods, you guys watching will be amazed! This is a full on race motor, and when you see the details, there will be no doubt about it! Car is apart, to get bead blasted, then epoxy primer. Need to set pinion angle, after we get the tranny adaptor, finish welding the rear up, get the frame blasted and painted, and run brake and fuel lines. Roy, that looks GREAT! It's everything I thought it would be- super job!
Hmmm, we need a body/paint guy to join the team! ![]() Ok, we're still moving along, but it's not all that exciting! Body is completely disassembled, and blasted. It and all the parts are getting epoxy primed, and then we'll start the body goof-off and rust repair. We have more rust than we thought, but that's a surprise, right! We are going to get the frame epoxy coated in a shiny black, then put the body back on it, after the body is primed, and take it to choptvan .We will then give it it's initial body chop. We'll just tack the top on, so that it can be removed, to weld the roll cage better. The car will then go to Gary Hart, who is doing the roll cage. I feel extremely lucky to have someone with Gary's experience doing the cage, as I know it will be done right in regards to safety, and tech specs. Hmmm, did I mention we need a body/paint guy to join the team!

...and the saga continues! We're working on the bellypan, so that we can run /BVGCC. Obviously, we'll have to make some mods to it, but we have it 'roughed' in. |

Get a rule book! Do your research on the web site. A lot to know and the most fun you will every have. SCTA does not play and the tech guys will not "look the other way", so do your home work

Boring stuff, but necessary . We don't want the body to rust, now that it's blasted, so we coated it in epoxy sealer primer.

Whew . . . finished the Crankshaft and Rod designs and got them off to Crower. Now we need to "get in line" and hopefully get something turned around in decent time. We heard it was about a 4-month wait, maybe they'll move faster and keep us happy
![]() I'm not going to tell you all the secrets of every design for the FlatCad - as a LOT is going into this and who knows if it is going to work Also, we want a chance to run it, learn and hopefully be competitive, so we're not going to share everything we're doing . . . hopefully you all can understand. Here is what I can share -- the crankshaft will be a custom billet design. There are a lot of things that we're doing to it to run a more modern bearing/design package and have a more performance oriented design. We need modern and available bearings - which is why we're going for BBC stuff. One of our biggest concerns is coming up with a design that is strong enough to take the horsepower and extended high-rpm usage . . . not an easy goal. Here is a image that shows some of the design work for the snout and rear flange. What I'm showing has been edited to protect the guilty -- so all key design criteria is not included . . . or all the key dimensions. Now I need to finish the girdle, main caps, intake plate and motor plate designs . . . much to do, but these are not as long of lead-time items as the crank and rods (at least I hope)!
