It's that time again fellow HAMB members to post pics this time on The Mother Of All Engine Bay Threads!!! I am looking for ideas on mounting Voltage Regulators, Fuel Blocks, Wires, Engines, Fans, etc. If you have a trick on how to make a clean and Sanitary engine bay post it! Right now I am working on finishing the body work on my 35 Coupe's firewall and I am interested in keeping it as clean and thoughtful as possible. So if you have ideas on where to mount particular things on any car really I want to see them. I seen a thread on "period" hose clamps the other day and that's the type the attention to detail that I am looking for. Also if you have "ins" on where to find cool wire (cloth or looms) let us in on that. I would like to make this an all encompassing thread where we can go to for inspiration and ideas and well as questions when redoing a Firewall or engine bay on our Hot Rods & Customs just like the Mother of all Tire Threads, Exhaust etc. I'll start with a car that is of great importance to me. First of all I think LazyV8's '39 DLX is one of the baddest cars to hit the HAMB if not the world and I refer to it for inspiration all the time. His engine bay is perfectly planned and clean as a whistle. I'll be honest, if you see a Filko Regulator on my car you'll know where I got the idea. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Need one!! ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks LazyV8 for the eye candy! If ya got 'em post 'em!!!! . |

Yeah he definitely did a killer job. He almost had me painting my firewall white/cream because it looks so good. Then couple that with everything else and I knew this would be a great bench mark to show what a clean engine bay looks like.

when i bought my house, i found a really cool filco cabinet mounted on the wall in the shop. i'll have to post a pic of it here, despite it being a bit off topic. i am really interested to see what people have to offer. i could use some inspiration planning how the 34 will look under the 'hood.'

Here's a glimpse of another one of my favorites...The Satan Coupe (CLONE). Simple Aluminum Firewall with 60's Chevy M/C & Clutch reservoirs (Original has single res MC), Perfectly dressed HEMI etc. I wish we could get a shot with the Hood off so we could see the rest. I'll search a bit....

Another one just to give an idea of a great looking custom car engine bay. Simple and practically stock but clean and well done. I love how well all the inner fenders were painted as well as the top of the Radiator.

I leaned toward the wimbleton white fire wall to highlight the engine and tried to keep the firewall clutter free. HRP

I love the Hildebrandt VC's and how the fuel lines were ran. Everything being clean is nice too!
![]() HHR always does a nice job! ![]() Voltage Regulator mounted sideways on Diana Branch's Sedan! ![]() Pretty much another inspirational one that I look to for advise. ![]() Chrome generator is nice. I also liked that even though modern wire ends (they may be period I'm not sure) were used he did them all in blue to fit the overall feel. I also like the chrome dip stick and tube and candy painted frog mouths. ![]() Does it get any cleaner? It should be it's a Museum piece haha! IVO!

I will post this one because I think Del has done an amazing job with the engine bay. The hottest 235 I've seen and the whole engine bay is nice to boot! Del has pinstriping on places you'll never ever see which is totally Hotdamn.

My engine in my '47 Chevrolet PU, tryed to keep it simple and all the engine sheetmetal was powdercoated and the block/head grey. The copper was for fun and the white plug wires popular back in the day also.

Scooter, it's some sort of modified Fuel Injected '57 Chevy 283 Motor. The finned box seems to be the same but that contraption off the side is different.

Alright since this pretty close to what my finished engine should look like let me ask you a couple of questions. Where do you think the voltage regulator is mounted? How many of you guys mount them on the inside of the car? Any cool places to keep them out of sight but easy to service?
I started sanding the casting marks off my exhaust manifolds to have them chromed much like HHR did on this one. But then I started to think that I am going to have way too much shiny stuff going on so I am hot coating them satin black to match other accessories. Also what about fuel blocks. Most of the time I see them on firewalls but once in a while I see a few mounted off intake and they look great. I'm looking for details on motors so if you have 'em post 'em!!!

I primed my firewall last Friday so I am getting closer and closer to finalizing where everything will go. I think I am going to make a mount off the intake to house the fuel block and I am going to put the voltage regulator on the passenger side since that's where I plan to mount the generator. Still would like more idea and examples of clean engine bays.
Here's a few that fellow Hamb member took.... Nice looking motor and S.Co.T blowerr but those AN fittings need to go. Perfect. ![]() Another example of perfection...

Here's a couple engine bay questions for ya!!!
What's the best factory engine bay (satin black) spray that you've found? Is there one that you guys swear by when bench building generators and such? What about durability and keeping it clean? Also what are you favorite brands for water pump belts on Flatheads etc. My Dayco broke after only a few weeks so I am looking for something else. |

My humble contribution to this great thread is the engine bay of a '49 Meteor I built for a customer. Hidden in there are : power steering, A/C, cruise, w.washer, two solenoids, PCV valve, full pressure oil filter, Red's Headers, Holley 4 bbl, Mallory dual points, hand made brackets + shrouds + breather front. All this mounted on an 8BA bored .080 and ported, with a T5 behind it. Hope you like it.

I have a really nice 365 Eldorado engine sitting in my garage all torn down and waiting for a rebuild. The thing was driving just a few years ago. Don't think for a second I don't second guess my choice of running a 265 Chevy engine in my '35 instead of that motor. It taunts me.......taunts me!!!!!!

NICE! What the heck is that finned, heat sink looking thing on the firewall above the evil dagger handles?
AND! What am I looking at BELOW the dagger handles, to the inside of the frame, in the shadows?? I see a fitting and a.... ?? |

Its a Zener diode heatsink that the coil lead comes out of, I just like them
![]() The block you see is a oil sender block mounted on the frame, I don't like the senders in view so i made up a block to mount the oil gauge & oil light sender its then connects to the engine by a pipe. I made a stainless cover for the senders although only 1 is in this pic. ![]()

![]() ![]() slowly but surely it's starting to take shape. I'm looking forward to attaching the inner fender panels and detailing the wiring and the bolt on components. Not much bling but I do value clean engine compartments.

I kind of thought that might be a power related heat sink! HAHA! Looks really cool! (sorry for the pun) You, sir, have the knack for details! I love this kind of stuff.

damn, wish I was farther along on my little Dodge.. I've got some cool tricks up my sleeve for it... (i.e. a small stash of period correct hose clamps, brass fittings, cloth wrapped wire, all the good stuff, with a few cool accesories, oh and lots of glass (Holley Glass Bowls, Ball Air Cleaners (originally pre cleaners for Farm All Tractors), Carter Sediment bowls w/ the rock filters, etc.).. And a really cool Reclaim-O cast alum. Oil filter w/ a spin on stashed inside.. Oh and lots of glossy black paint w/ cream striping on the engine tin.. it'll make my little 223 stand out.. wish I could transfer the image in my head onto this computer...

Anybody have anything else to contribute? We're in the middle of running the brake lines in my '35 and after that the engine is being plopped in so I am getting down to the nitty gritty!

For real!! I don't work late into the night I try to spend time with the family....but then they fall asleep too early like they did just now and I am full of questions. So I am seeking them so that I don't have to do things twice. I will tell you this.....I am super proud of the engine bay thus far. Shiny single stage black paint on the engine, polished trans adapter, black tranny, Offy valve covers....looking good.

I have not looked at this post in a while.....Thanks classic, the flathead blower shot was from a photoshoot earlier this summer, I am not sure when it is suppose to run? Crissy (Hilton) Henderson is stunnning. Here is another shot by Trent Sherrill with Crissy and my 40. To keep this on topic, there is a chrome cross ram in there!

Here's mine, a Chevy in my regularly driven '55 Buick Special 2-door post. Still some detailing to do, but it's getting there. Air cleaner is a gennie Olds unit shortened and adapted to the Holley carb.

Jeffrey, I just found this thread. Great job! I'm in the thinking stage on my '41 Plymouth, which I will paint a shade of maroon/burgundy. I'm really leaning toward a satin black for the engine compartment with the Mopar painted hemi orange. Any more ideas/pictures/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The only pic I have is my avatar...for some reason I can't attach pics. Anyway when I finished the truck the engine compartment looked great...but I drive it alot...and it is impossible to keep clean. By the way, what is the best way to clean polished aluminum? Someone told me white vinagar...but that didn't work. The best thing I've found is simichrome and time.

The motor isnt the most HAMB friendly, but the rest of the truck is.

Looks incredible Rocky. Any shots of the other side? Did you go back to the generator? I am worried about space there.

Not really HAMB friendly but this is in my '63 Catalina build. Still a ways to go.

I pulled the clip off my Chevy about 4 years ago. Moved the battery to the trunk and just tried to make everything look clean and simple.

Wow, some incredible engine compartments here. Mine's in process and it only a driver, not a show car - obviously.

Another driver here. It's a 350 in my 56 truck. Like most other rides, it's never done yet either.

To me... the engine has to "pop"... and it doesn't take a lot of money or a lot of chrome... just an attention to detail.
Here's a few I've done... ![]() ![]() Before ![]() After

If I didn't have my buddy custom make a generator bracket that snugs the valve covers so tight I might think about switching valve covers to the set of Weiand Block Letter ones I scooped off here last week! I guess I'm gonna build another 265 sooner or later!

That's pretty sweet. I was just looking at your 265 thread today as I hauled home a disassembled, machined 20 years ago complete 265 out of a Nomad. Heads are redone, crank has been ground, and it came with all the new stuff to put it back together. Viva la 265!
