Default 1940 Mercury old Custom convertible found.

My brother told me about a 1940 Mercury Custom .He found out he went to high school with the girl who ownes it.She was given the car from her dad on her 16th birthday 45 years ago.I went over to see the car because she didn't know a lot of what was done to the car.The following mods were done as far as i can tell.Pie cut hood,i believe frazier grill and front bumper,52 ford taillamps with modified rear fenders, running boards removed with new lower panels added, chrome removed with filled holes, and possible rear trunk area sectioned. The drivetrain appears to be all original. The car does not run or drive and i am not sure what it would take to get it drivable but the car does need a total resto.I will try to get some pics up on here.I now know the thrill you other guys get when you see these barn finds. If you love the East Coast style Customs this car you would love.I found a dash plaque on the dash from a rallye in 1959.I believe the car was built in the fifties.

It's interesting how different people can have such different perceptions. I think the thing is pretty rad, and I actually LIKE the front. I don't think it's homely at all, but I do feel the car would read better if it had some new paint on it.

I'm not seeing what is so horrible about this car. I think it's great and I'd love to have it. I might make a few minor alterations to it if I were the one to restore it but there are few customized cars out there that I wouldn't change anything on.

Some of you guys have no vision.

I don't think that is a Mercury. I think it is a Lincoln convertible body style from 42 thru 48.

THE REAL SHIT. Clean it up, shine it up, and this thing would rock. It has a custom style that would be REAL and DIFFERENT. It is East Coast alright. Not my favorite style, but authentic.

i dunno about that, it would be ALOT of work to switch the pushbuttons on a 42-48 Lincoln doors to the lever style that the mercury had & since who ever kustomized the rest of this car didn't seem to radical I doubt they would have gone to so much trouble, PLUS that is NOT a lincoln A-Pillar.
Also, that is a 40 Merc Dash, plus that "tiny" rear fender opening is a dead giveaway to Mercury sheet metal.

Not big or square enough to be a Lincoln. I still think it's a 40 Merc but a little on the ugly side.

When i first saw it i thought it was fugly too but the more you look at it the cooler it is.Not every Merc can be a Barris custom.I will agree i wish i had the money to buy it and redo some of the mods. The amount of work is amazing. The lady who owns it said her dad was not a bodyman.I told her he must have known a bodyman because the average guy would have not done this many mods on thier own.She does know that someone helped him.If anyone recognizes the car from years ago please let me know.I wish i could have the car restored for her .

I think you are too high on your price but that is just my opinion and we all know what that is worth, I would think the car would be more around a 10,000-15,000 car at best, like others have said it is not all that pretty, it is the real thing, it is a real period custom but not one of the best done cars. Also I am guessing it has a fair amount of rust, and that it has no real history, so both of those will hurt its value, and I may still be too high on price my self, I am just thinking convertibles are getting hard to find. Just my 2cents, take it for what its worth. Jim

This car is rad cuz of it's history, NOT because of WHAT was done to it, but more so when it was done.

hey bros, cool is subjective... NOT!

look what George Barris did to the Chrisman Coupe!

I've typed it before HAMB Clones... all that glistens is not golden.

someone should buy it and fix the rear fenders and put a new front clip on it (go ahead and save the old parts for the survivor lovers) and really have a beautiful car. As is it reminds me of a Morris Minor.

cfnutcase you might be right but i crawed under the car and although it isn't perfect the floors look really good and the inner rockers appear to be original. We are going to get it back in her garage and jack it up so i can take some underneath pics.Finding a 1940 Merc conv and then having it custimized isn't going to be cheap.I am looking at the car as a survior and would hope someone would keep most of the mods done to the car.

I don't think it would sell at auction for 5 figures, sorry. Too many condition issues, despite the history.

i was with lstwsh when he went to look at the car.it is definitely a 40 merc convert.one thing that lstwsh didn't mention is that the fenders are not molded in..you could if you wanted, unbolt front and rear, find 40 merc front and rear fenders,a hood and grille, and probably be pretty close to having an original 40 merc convert.the drivetrain doesn't look to be changed at all.all the vacuum lines and the cylinders for the top are still in place.it has the correct cast iron brackets in the front floor and behind the front seat,at the door posts.we couldn't get into the trunk,so i don't know what is in there or the condition of it or the tool tray is.the car itself appears to be pretty rust free.we both think she has something there.

Car looks like it has a moustache! lol Not the best looking custom out there. I also think that $25K is very optomistic for the car. I'd pay $8,000 so it should be worth about twice that.

I don't think it is that bad. It certainly has character. Not sure $20k is justifyable, but it has a LOT of potential.

Great find!

its definitely not the best looking custom, but i wouldnt change it. i think its kind of cool, and it's different than the rest of the 40 merc customs. I think it's ugliness is kind of what actually makes it cool. if it's changed it will just blend in with the rest. needs wide whites.

Not only do I think that car is quite cool. I think it needs to be preserved. Look, there are only a finite number of Customs, or Hot Rods, that were built in any particular era and I think it is somewhat important to retain as much of that history as possible.
Someone needs to buy this and restore it to it's former glory,a nd at that point I think a lot of you will actually like it!

Neat old custom for sure! Thanks for posting! About three or four years ago at the LA Roadsters Fathers day show, there was a very nice old custom 39 mercury convertible that had a chopped windshield and an old carson/gaylord style top that was obviously done back in the day, it had several other custom touches (it was a real clean tastefully done 40's style custom) and it sat out in the for sale area all weekend long and it was priced just around $20,000, maybe $25,000. At the end of the weekend it had still not sold. My friend ended up buying it for probably a little more than half the asking price, don't know for sure. Not to rain on your parade or anything but considering the economy was in better shape back then and that was a better car by far than the one pictured here, i am doubtful that you will get twenty-thousand for the car pictured here. I'm thinking ten would be doing extremely well at least here in California, things may be different in Ohio though, I don't know. Either way Good luck with that and thanks for posting the pics.

IF you were serious, you'd put it in the Classifieds FIRST instead of "pimping" the car by posting pics, asking for info on it's history and your "Little Brother" saying he "feels" it's worth mid-20's.

No Problem.........I appreciate your opinion
Maybe the car is closer to being in the $15000-$18000 range
The pictures don't do justice for the car
When my brother gets back from Knoxville, he plans to take better pictures
and also under the car and Trunk
All I know is my brother's friend Mark, sold a "Rough" pars car for $15000
Any old Rodders from Orlando Fl that recognize the car from1959?

My brother lives much closer to the car than I do
His best friend has owned 2 40 Merc Converts, so he knows what they're worth and what places to look for when looking the car over
Maybe when he gets back from Knoxville, I'll have him put it on the classified
Nothing wrong with asking about history
Had I not asked about history of the "Hamke Car", the original owners son would not have it today
My brother and I are getting "Zero" for helping and old HS friend
she really hates to get rid of it

After reading my Post again,I can see what you're saying when I read it again
I ment to say "Taking offers here first" to sell the car
I wanted my "Hamb" Friends to get first chance to buy it
If it doesn't sell here
Then I'll help the owner sell it elsewhere
I'm not "Pimping" the car
I haven't seen the car since 1967
My brother thinks it's worth mid 20's
I don't know since I'm not around cars as much as he is

He said over all,the car is solid
I asked about the Doors, and he said they're mint shape
The owner found the trunk key
so we'll have pictures later

Hey,

It is what it is! One thing the world doesn't need now is another "Cliche Custom"! Who, other than a total poser, would buy something like this only to convert it into " one jus' like Sam built", or "one 'jus like Jimmy built" etc.

Good luck with the sale.

Agree 100%..

Not going to argue about how pretty it is,but you guys that just don't get it should turn off your computers and go paint your bumpers,or something else equally constructive

Dosn't look like a Merc or Ford, maybe a few inches of the top and a better looking grill will give this duckling some attitude.

This car has serious potential to be anything from a resto back to it's original custom to a rework into different styling. I'd have it in a heartbeat. It's strange how some car people can't see that. If your are asking for votes I'd say find a Merc grill and rework the headlights. Let's not forget that the 37 Ford was for many decades considered Henry's ugly duckling.

The car is a survivor...that fact alone makes it cool....
There are so many "cookie cutter" and "me too" kustoms around already,,it's kinda refreshing to see something a little different...So much potential there,,so many possibilities.......just requires a little "outside the box" thinking, , ,

What amazes me looking at this thing, is the amount of work into it. I mean on top of all the work that everyone is debateting if it's ugly or not, did anyone notice all the body lines have either been sectioned or hammered out?!!?! The work, weather ugly or not, is amazing! Drop a 48 olds or caddy grill in it, and shorten up the tail light pods, and it would look COMPLETELY different. Also, notice it was a very "practical" custom. Even with all the customizing, it isn't chopped. It also still has all the handles, and the lights aren't frenched, making repairs easier?

Any who buys this car will redo the front grille and bring out the car's inner beaty, and remove it's outer groucho.

God I hope not! It is a true survivor and a time capsule of an east coast custom and for that reason it needs to be preserved as such for future generations. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this certainly is not as ugly as a lot of the stuff that Barris turned out in the later years that is held in high esteem. In fact if it turned out this car had been done by a "Name" customizer, the people here would be all over saving it!

Geez, I would hope not....
see cool is subjective..... with all due respect, although VERY NICE, this car is by NO means "Traditional" in anyway & to me it is the less attractive, this streetrodded Mercury would be "easier" to undo what is done, but the "survivor" custom has more .... well, history, style, you would either have to leave it or make some "period" changes to maybe pretty it up a bit.

Shit, do what ever you want w/it if you buy it, it's gonna be YOUR car, this is a board of opinions, some facts & lots of bs so this is my contribution.

Vert1940 is a street rod, NOT a traditional styled custom, Which is fine, whatever you are into.

Totally agree w/ you James, i didnt like it one bit, but its already a diffrent car w/ nice paint on. Will be an intresting build, and any old custom, beautiful or ugly is worth saving.
Its like history, you dont skip periods because theyre boring or whatever, everything needs to be told......wow,never thought i cold come up w something this deep! ah ah ah....

I've said it before, and i'll say it again,,,JamesD...YOU ARE A PHOTOSHOP GOD!!, , , , if i had the car, i would keep it the way it is for history's sake,,but if i did make any changes, i'd shave the handles, get rid of the taillights, use teardrop skirts, 56 lincoln caps, a two inch chop,,,drop the rear down an inch or so,,paint it deep burgundy metallic with a white top,,,,,

X 2. For it to be restored back to it's original "little pages" look, it would have to be bought by someone that 1) Digs period Customs AND 2) loves the look of the customizing that was done to the car. Problem is that this probably won't happen as the "customizing" looks worse than the stock Merc look. It'll probably get new front and rear ends and a few inches out of the top.

Glad that she is letting it go-it could have easily sat til her death when you consider the sentimental factor of her Father building it for her+45 years. Good to see it's in pretty solid shape too. Imagine if it sat outside for 45 years.

Great custom. It might not be everybody's cup of thee, but it sure was for the owner/builder. He put a lot of effort into it to create his dream car.

The removal of all the body seams is amazing, and a very time consuming task. But it sure fits this car very good. I doubt if one would customize it further, say chopped top, 1940 Merc grille and stock fenders will look good on it. The way the car was designed by the owner/builder it seems to all work together for me. Its not something I would built if it was my project. But even the grille and bumpers seam to fit the theme, in my eyes. It most likely was a car that was used as a regular car. So it had to be practical.
I would love to see this one being restored as it used to be. It would be a perfect sample of an East coast period custom. JamesD's Photoshop shows how good it will look. A nice paint job, some wide whites and a set late 40's early 50's aftermarket hubcaps will make this a very nice custom car.

Not all 1939-40 Mercs need to have the same look. It sure is nice to see something refreshing from time to time. And this one sure is. It looks to be built very well.

Some of you guys are just thinking out your ass. You really have no clue what real convertibles in this condition go for, even in this economy. The price being asked is very fair for this car in this condition. Not saying there isn't room to haggle but to say the lady is way off is not the case. If you guys only knew what I got for Rusty Olds last month ('47 Olds convertible) in far worse condition you'd shit, and a '40 Merc custom convertible is worth a whole lot more then a stock '47 Olds convertible. Real drop tops are worth lots more then their counter part coupes.

Its not worth saving.
I'll be right there to save you from having to make decisions and fretting over to "restore" it or rekustom it. I think,.02, that it should be cleaned up and used.

he gave her the car for her 16th birthday

I went to High school with her and her husband

she was offered $10000 a while back but she didn't sell it because she knows the car is worth more
I agree with her

Better pics would help the car sell for more money. If possible I'd get it on concrete or asphalt too. Anybody who really likes that year Merc will tear that front grille out as soon as they get it home, it's worth more with a stock grille.

it is a bit odd looking by todays standards, but back in the day I'm sure it was very cool. If I win the megamillions this week I'd buy it and maybe continue the customizing a bit... molded fenders, mild chop and drop it a bit.

unless the missing body line was simply leaded in, it would be cost prohibitive to restore it to stock.

I think it is cool... people who don't are weird.

Nice, but I would have to lose that bumper and grille. That looks like someone kicked it in the mouth and it got a swollen lip. Kinda like BOTOX.

When my brother gets back from Knoxville, more pictures will be taken of the car
It will then go on "Classified" section here
I would like to help 2 people
The Lady that owns the car
And a person here, that would appreciate the car and maybe share the "Build" or "restoration" with us on the HAMB
I think the amout it sells for, would be the same here as Ebay
It's hard for her to sell it,She's owned it for most of her life
It's a part of her
She has other things going on that have priority
I don't want to get in to her life story
But she's being very noble for what she's doing
and giving up
These cars only come up for sale very rarely

Being noble has nothing to do with the insane amount of money she wants for the car. If she REALLY wanted to sell it she would price it so.

The correct price of this car, will be determined by what someone is willing to pay for it, and someone else, is willing to accept for it.. period!

I don't think that asking a high number at first is too crazy when you have no idea what it really will bring. But having said that, a car is only a "new discovery" once and once that novelty wears off interest in the car will too. After a while when the car has failed to sell for the rediculous price, people tend to feel that there must be something REALLY wrong with a car after it's been on the market for a few weeks or months and nobody has bought it. After listing it on craigslist AND here on the HAMB, I'm sure the seller has gotten several "fair" offers for the car and talked to enough people about it to put together a good fair deal for both parties. After all of that, sticking to the rediculously high price is just plain greed.

I honestly dont get some of the comments here.. but maybe I think different.. I always thought when it came to old customs that some of the builders tried to make it look totally different from stock.. to the point where someone spends 30 mins trying to figure out what the car WAS, while admiring all the body mods and time and work that went into the car.. seems to me just by reading the first page.. the builders got a few of you asking what was it.. no it cant be a merc maybe its a" whatever"...to me that says alot about the work that the builders put into it.. its not the same cookiecutter car.. its a old custom, built at a time when there were there where other customs built and you had to use what ever you could find different from what other customs and stock cars had. its not like today where everyone copies such and such's car.. like some one said before.. its not a sam's car or whoever..calling it fugly and such just shows that you dont get it.. maybe you like things a certain way but this wasnt made last week, this was built like 50 years ago, different time, different custom car scene.. I dont know.. to me this a cool old custom that should be saved as it is.. not put back to stock.. or heavy modded.. doing that just kills something that lasted 50 years untouched.. but hey thats just my opinion.. and I aint all there..

TRUE! You can buy one finished for what it would cost to "build" that one-especially in this economy. Do a Google search. For instance. http://www.streetrodsforever.com/194...nvertible.html

Well, I know its not the popular opinion here......but that finished '40 Merc convert is spectacular! It would be nice to have a piece of history I guess, but I'll take the original look for myself. I have a freind with a '40 Merc coupe that was a show car in the 50's, complete with '54 Buick headlights and other period mods, but it's in rough shape now, been sitting in an outdoor lean to for many years.

I'm glad to hear she's willing to part with it, no matter the price. It's nice that it will be offered here in the Classifieds. I guess she has settled on a number then? I sure hope there is a HAMB member out there that wants it and can afford it. This car needs to be saved.

A "Hot Rod" or period "Custom" demands more money

Here's an example of a "Hamb" Member"s car for sale..............Sweet Car!

1940 Ford Convertible

Location: Fredonia, NY Price: $ 67,500 or ?
When I was in High School in the late 1950’s, the first car I built for the road was a
1940 Ford Convertible. Fifty some years later, after countless other builds and when time and money were not issues, I decided to re-create that first car. It is now being offered for sale.
For Sale is a 1940 Ford Convertible. It is a fresh restoration of an all steel Ford car with a newly rebuilt, bored, 53 Mercury Flathead and a true 1939 Ford top loader transmission. The engine supports duel Stromberg 97’s, a MSD distributor and special aluminum heads (Big Boys) handmade by Paul Samarin. These 3 1/4 inch high heads, besides looking great, provide extra cooling capacity and a mild gain in compression. The exhaust system consists of ceramic coated Red’s Headers, Smithy’s mufflers and aluminized dual pipes. The engine is cooled by a Walker Radiator with an electric cooling fan. Power is coupled to a traditional banjo rear end, lowered 5 inches. The front end has a 4 inch dropped axle, dropped spindles and a super slide spring attached to the frame by a traditional four bar setup. Brakes are 11 inch disk fronts and drum rears.
The body has been painted with Midnight Blue basecoat/clearcoat. The exterior body
is relatively stock except for shaved door handles (keyless entry), a decked trunk lid (keyless entry) and smoothie running boards.
The white vinyl interior and blue convertible top were custom made by Lebarron Bonney. Other interior features include, power windows, two speed electric wipers,
a custom dash with six Stewart Warner gauges and a classic 1939 Ford steering column with banjo steering wheel.
Since after all these years, I am still building early Fords, the asking price of $67,500 can be reduced by trading in an early Ford coupe or roadster project. Questions and pictures via e-mail at enzcss@netsync.net or call Neil at 716-672-2743

Hey, I agree 100% with Pipes. This ain't exactly something I'd want in my garage but, I'd rather spend more time looking at this neat ORIGINAL cool custom than some of the newer "bolted-on, buffed-up, bought it all at the speedshop" nowadays 'customs'. Imagine what the builder had to work with when this was built? Opinion - I like it as-is, with maybe some sprucing up but keeping it as originally customized. 2c. . .
