Update 183: Front to back as the reassembly continues. Jim Hume is working on chute releases.

The liner is getting closer and closer to its debut at Speed Week. Motor parts are being installed and the tail section is about completed.

Update 184: Steering. Marlo Treit gives his evaluation of the system.

This is another one we've all been waiting for. Many people have questioned what kind of steering system the liner will use. We haven't disclosed it for a number of reas
ons, but now it's explained in detail

Only one catch. Ya gotta go to the site to read about it. I'll just say that it's the same type of system that the Summers Brothers used on their Goldenrod.

The Treit and Davenport streamliner was on the salt flats for display and a bit of "trial run" testing of the car carrier and the trailer, etc. It didn't compete at that event, but drew a whole lotta attention. In addition to the photos that Freud shot, I made a few myself. Ok, more than a few. A lot. I chose 48 of 'em to use in this week's post:

Target 550 Update 188: The liner is back at Hume's shop for a little more work. The photos show that the car carrier is better suited to turning around on the salt flats than on a gravel driveway. A few other subjects are covered, but I'll leave it to the viewer to check 'em out.

Target 550 Update 189: Getting ready for testing. There's still a lot of work to be done before the liner can make its test runs. Some of 'em are shown in this post...like the doors on the parachute tubes and drainage holes/slots in the blowers and belly pan.

Target 550 Update 190: Here are some shots of the liner's instrument panel and some of the unusual materials used in finishing it, mainly ivory. This isn't yer normal elephant ivory (which us illegal to possess, buy or sell) but that which comes from a prehistoric mammoth.

And just to top it off, there are a couple of areas that are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Pretty fancy stuff!

That's a good question. The answer is probably in the previous posts where the tubes and latching mechanisms are described, but I'm up in the night fighting with a recalcitrant computer.

Seems the built-in fan on the Radeon video card has seized and is, as a friend might say, wreaking hate and discontent with the system, including the only BSDs I've ever seen with Windoze 7 Pro. If it's not one thing it's another.

Waitaminit while I do some quick checking. I'll be afk for a minit. I'm baaaack. Did ya miss me?

Going back to post 189, the chute release handles are shown:

The tube release mechanism is positively actuated by cables connected to levers in the cockpit. However, in this photo:

http://www.target550.com/gallery/189...ng/189_023.jpg, Freud states that he hasn't seen the mechanism for expelling the chutes. And it goes on to say, "Time will tell on that." I guess we'll all have to be somewhat patient until that's revealed.

Yanno, I wish I lived a whole lot closer to Marlo in Oregon or Hume in Washington. Then I could just run over to either location and check things out. But alas, I'm in the USSR (Utah Sovereign State Republic) and only get exit visas for salt flats trips.

You might wanna post this on Landracing to see if Freud knows off the top of his head or found out anything in his trip to Sedro Wooley yesterday. After yesterday, the liner may be back at Marlo's hangar with the exception of the tail assembly which is still having the riveting redone.

Update 192: The parts of the front wheel fairings and their attachments. There's more to the fairings than I was aware of. Doc Freud explains it with his photos and text.

Update 193: This update covers the canopy latch and duct as well as the finalized wheel fairings. Things are getting to the point that there are only minor details to finish up. I hope to be able to announce a re-scheduled testing date in the near future. Cross yer fingers.
