Default Another Swedish Hot Rod

Hi this my '29 Ford roaster pick up.
When I started this thread I had an invitation for the Helsinki Car Show in Finland 2nd of April, and a half finished car.
That was 2 moths ago.
It's been a race against the clock but I made it with 1 hour to go, for real!
Everything without the paint job and interior is made by me with normal garage tools an next to zero budget.

Enyhow... this is how it all started

And sorry about the spelling but I spell like a retard in swedish to haha.

It all started with a original model A frame I hade from a earlyer build and when I found a gas tank and firewall I knew exactly what I wanted to build...

I starded by welding the frame, front/rear axle to a jig with the riding hight I wanted.

When I hade all the things in place like the crossmember, motor/tranny mount front/rear axle I welded everytning, with the frame still in the jig.

This is how low it's going to be in the lowest position, yes it will have air bags all around.

I will do my best to hide the bags and to keep as much as possible of the original frame.

Get it?

The body is a mixture of original, Brookville and homemade.

No bondo is being used, is all lead like back in the days

The dashboard is homemade and the gauged is '59 Volvo

To be honest I bretty much build the car around the winsheild...
I allways liked the "Hallock" winsheilds and when I found the gas tank and firewall I orderd a winsheild from Seller Equipt the day after haha.
Great fit and finish by the way

First time it´s out of the garage.
A lot of things I will change that I didn´t see when is was in the garage.

When I got the the frame back from sandblasting and power coating it looked like a moon landscape

Repainting... Thanx PG, beutifull jobb

bro!

Hell Yeah!! Cat belive how much a little paint can do!
The front axle and wishbones are from a '48.
The wishbones are turned upside down, cut and welded to get the right angle (4-6 degrees)
I would do it again I would used a more narrow axle like a model A.
I have to use 1" spacers for the '56 Ford rear axle now.

Becouse a model A frame is thicker then a '32-'36 it´s stronger even if it looks like a bicycleframe.

The ladderbars are made by me, it's realy hard to build a low "functional" car!
You cant bye 1 thing over the counter, everyting have to be custom made.

Painted the Powerglide and engin in it´s new color

Like I said there is not one thing you can bye...
I bought a HURST motor mount on Ebay and it wasn´t even close to fit haha.
I hade to make a hole new one and send it for crome ( expensive).

The body is on it's way to the painter.
Low enught???
The tires are Firestone 5.25x18 in the front and 7.50x16 in the back.
The front wheels was just for rolling the car in and out of the garage but after a while they kind of grew on me and now I love how they don´t mach the rear '40th wheels.

I was kind of confused at first, origonal parts throughout and lead instead of plastic filler like they did back when, than air bags? In your defense you did say you were trying to hide them, and it is coming out VERY nicely i like it alot.

Why couldn't you put it at the ride height you like and leave it there? Are the air bags just for dumping it when it's parked?

I still like it, very nice work all around, keep the pics coming please.

I did a per of scoopes to cover the wishbone ends like on the bonneville hot rod's from the 50th.

I worked on cars sins I was 15 but I never knew how to work with sheet metal untill I took a course in Oakland Ca at Lazzes metal shaping, check out http://www.lazzemetalshaping.com/.

Hmmm, not sure if I will use them.
I decide later

Got the body back from paint
Rootbeer candy over green pearl and 8 layer of clear!
Looks great!!!
Thanx Hakan for the best jobb ever.

Time to make a radiator
It´s realy not that hard.

The upper watertank was made in 3 pices and leaded together.

I Leaded everyting from the inside, have no idé if it´s the right way to do it but it worked for me

Just to paint is and it´s done.
A couple of days work and $200 for the material.

Radiator in place and painted.
If I have the time I´m going to build a grille out of 1/2" stainless pipe east coast style. If I have the time..........

Ok, next thing is the Lake headers.
Like I said earlier, if is low yoe have to make it yourself!
This is probebly the one thing that toke the moste time of all the things of the hole car!!

It's made in thin stainless and then polished to show finish.
Everything whitout polishing is made by me.

I needed to do something to cover the ugly steering axle and I hade a pice of alloy, 4*4*1" so I used the grinder and the drilling macine and a few houres later it was done

I try to make everyting by myself and so far the only thing I have not done is paint, interior, electrical work and crome.

Looks good, just to polish it and it's done

Better then before don´t you think

The stering box is from a volkswagen van/transporter from the 60th?
It´s the best stering box ever build!

And no "sura" is the town i live in, not sora haha.

I hade a real hard time to found a nice looking alternator.
So I decide to use one from a Harley, it dosn´t have any "ears" like the car alternators have or a pulley but It was worth making new brackets and a pulley because the end result look´s real good.

I don't like when the alternator is wider then the grille shell.
On my first hot rod I put a generator on my rear axle, tought it was a great ide', untill I got stock in trafic for an hour and the batterie died on me haha.

The mid post was cut down 4" to get a more agressive look.

A new shifter was made from stainless, it´s going to be polished.

I bought a ´56 Ford steeringwheel on Ebay, and when I mounted it my legs didn´t fit haha.

But a '68 Ford taunus (europeen car, ugly as hell) steeringwheel was welded together with the '56 one and now my legs allmost fit

Very impressive, you do beautiful work! I see a lot of great cars coming from your country.
Please pay no attention to the crude comment posted about my land though, there are a LOT of great craftsman here as well.
Keep up the good work.

Great job on the roadster pick up! And your english spelling I am sure is way better than my swedish! As soon as I saw the small scoop I knew you had to know Lazze, he is a great teacher I have known him for a few years now, a real nice guy.

I hope to be starting my hand built roadster pick up very soon. I need to do a full shop remodel so I can fit all my equipment and still have room for my chassis table so I can work.

Also I dig bagged vehicles even if it is not "traditional", keep up the great work!

Ahh, thanks. See, told you it was a dumb question!

Since the pivot points of those bars and the bones are not concentric, is there any concern of suspension bind with this setup? Or is the travel too small for this to be an issue?

again not speaking for the OP but i'd think travel would be too small for any bind or really any type of air setup in the front... the bag inflation would increase ride height so much for a rod with a solid axle. That's why i've only ever seen em in the rear but hey to each his own!

Since the pivot points of those bars and the bones are not concentric, is there any concern of suspension bind with this setup? Or is the travel too small for this to be an issue?
The shackle eliminates the bind from having different arcs.

So here is the air bag construction.
I know most people here don´t like the ide' of using bags (and I´m not a big fan mysellf) but the thing is that Cadillac hade bags as an option 1959 so you can´t call is a "modern thing".

Like you can se on the picture the bag is "standing" on a 1 3/4" x 1/4" thick pipe with shackle in the front (so the axle can move up and down)
And in the back I used a soft bearing to avoid tensions.

The smallest bags I could find was FBI's Slam.
They measure 5" in diameter.

Did you make these panels or were they purchased? If purchased, can you point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Hi Urban.
I like the neat roll you put in the top of the dash to work with the Hallock screen.I'll have to do something similar myself.
Keep the updates coming,
Mark.

Rear axle

The rear axle.
What can I say... '56 ford, dusty as hell haha.
Pete and Jake shocks, Air Lift bags (lifts like 8"!!!)
The breake lines was a bitch.
The funny thing is that I just figured out how to do them in the front haha

As soon as I get home (next friday) I´m going to take picture of them.
The only thing I can say is that the wishbone is part of the construction

It's from http://www.brookvilleroadster.com/
Most stuff I bought from them have been realy good, but if you might need a bead roller for some parts.

Nice picture by the way haha.

The headlight/shock mount is from a 48-52 ford F1 truck, it would have been easier to make complete new ones insted of rebuilding the old ones.

I found a taillight... finnaly!
It´s a 40th Vincent motorcycle taillight, wish it wasn´t aftermarket but right now I'm starting to panic a little bit, it's only 3 weeks left untill the show and I still don't have all the parts.

Time to paint the steering wheel.
Like I wrote earlier, the mid pice is '56 ford and the "ring" is europeen ford taunus welded together.

After I grinded down the bondo I rattle-can sprayed it with a filler and wet-sanded it

I'm allways supriced how glossy it gets even if it's just a garage pain job.
Some day I hope I could have my own spray booth.

The thing I like about HAMB is that people here build there own stuff, it proves that you dont need a lot of money to build a top notch Hot Rod or Kustom.

Yeah, that's the perfect place for the HAMB alliance tag.

Nice build!
Really looking forward to more of the updates!
Gotta love all the details you are making for it. Will surely be keeping an eye for it during the upcoming season here in Sweden!
Keep up the good work.

PS: Don't want to sound like a besserwisser but I'm sure that the middle part of the steering wheel you are using is from a 49 Ford Shoebox. Nevertheless, fantastic work!

The steering wheel in place

Because I didn't want the break cylinder on the outside and the car is to low to mount it underneath this was the best idé I could think of.
And yes I did the disco effect on purpos haha.

The bracket is made in stainless and every joint has bearings.
The break cylinder is '39-48 ford.
A break pedal has to be at least 6:1 on an early ford. I think it's like 10:1 original but I'm not sure.

I did not catch this before but don't you need to allow the brake line to flex at the rear housing? Looks to me that after a while the brake line will work-harden and fail.

I'm assuming he has a flex line near the front of the ladder bar assembly. What's pictured there all moves together as a unit.

Nice work, Demented!!!

Time to make the windshield.
I started by making tamplets out of masonite, then a auto glass shop cut it out in laminate glass.

Pieces of stripes was perfect to use as shims.

The slit was filled with silicone before the glass was put in.
I used my finger to smooth out the extra silicone.

Soap water helpes to prevent the silicone to stick on youre fingers and make the surface really smooth.

When its dry I will remove the "shims" and fill the gap with a little more silicone.

The end result.

The carb setup is done!!!
They come from some old hot rod and the crome are pretty ruff but I like that they look used.
The fuelline are made in 3/8" stainless pipe all the way from the fuelpump.

After all a Hot Rod are made to drive!

Looks great! Nice stainless work.
I prefer the used look over the new shiny look myself, more appealing to me.

I couldn't agree with you more over your last comment.

Fxxxing Hell!!!!
What have I got myself in to?
7 days until the car show and I haven't even started the engin yet.
This is my "to do" list for this weekend
Tomorrow: weld a aluminum gas tank and wire the engin.
Friday: Start the engin.
Saturday:Finish the wire work
unfortunately my time plan have a tendency to be a little optimistic haha

Friday: Start the engin.
Saturday:Finish the wire work
unfortunately my time plan have a tendency to be a little optimistic haha
While doing the wiring, just remember "The 3 P's", "Patience, Perseverance and Profanity". It will get you thru just fine.
Looking forward to seeing the finished rod!

The gas tank was a lilttle tricky to make.

My break is not strong enugh so I hade to weld all corners.

Allmost 10 gallon.

Here is a few pic of the first Hot Rod I build.

This is how it looked when I found it.

Here is the last pictures of my build.
Forgot to mention the engin so here it come's..
Its a Chevy -63 283 bored 0.60" with high comp pistons (11,5:1)
Power pack heads (327) with bigger stainless
valves and 1:5 roller rockers, an ISKY "300 hp" cam (simular to the one in the 300hp 327 engin), Mallory distributor, Offenhauser 2x3 intake with two Stromberg 97.
It's not tuned in yet but is sure sound great

A friend of my took this pictures for Low Brow Magazine.

The color changes from black, purple, brown and greenisch (the base color). Lookes better in real life.

1" to go in the lowest possition and 5 in drive possition.

The shift knob is from a '41 ford I think, it was not my first pick but then it kind of growed on me and now I love it!

See how happy I am (to tha left) haha
Thanx for taking the time to look at my photos and for the nice comments.
See you guys when my next car (Ford '41 coupe) is done.
Urban
