Default What was the craziest car deal you made?

In 1970 I traded a rifle I had $5.00 in for a 1963 Plymouth Fury . It had a 383 with 400 racing heads and a 3/4 street cam.
An old boozer had gotten this car and put a tranny in it and said the tranny was bad and he just wanted to get rid of it. We towed it to my dads gas station and found no trans fluid had been put in the tranny. I was only 16 yrs old at that time.

I bought a 54 Chevy from my H.S. buddy for $5.00, of course it was in 1964! The worst thing I did was trade my $0 Ford coupe for a 57 Chevy even, the 57 had a broken camshaft. STUPID.

$100 for a '63 Impala 2dr hardtop abandoned in a vacant city lot after the owner tore the frame bouncing it with hydraulics. Came with an extra frame!

Got paid $50 to haul of a '66 Impala 2dr hardtop and an 85 Caprice donor car. The Impala ended up having a 327 with a Winter Industries Hi-Rise Aluminum intake. The casting numbers were from late 63 to early 64 Corvette. Too bad I am not a Chebby kind of guy. One of the Good Guys Reps drives it, now!

I traded 2 tattoos for a this century OT sedan with bad brakes.

Put a subframe in a Metro in exchange for a nice Mk2 Escort van.

The guy couldn't get it to run right after spending big bucks on new engine gearbox clutch 4 new tyres and having 2 new wings put on it and a cheap respray.

Took me 2 nights after work to fix the metro and 10 minutes to sort out the running on the Escort. Turned out it had the wrong dipstick in it and had been overfilled with oil that it was being sucked into the inlet making it smoke and pink really badly.

Guy was very pissed off but stuck too the deal.

Drove it for 3 years until I lent it to my brother to move his stuff to a new flat. He got hit by a meals on wheels van and the insurance company wrote it off, paid me £900 and let me keep the van.

Ended up scrapping it but kept the engine box and axle for a future project.

68 VW Bug from the back lot of a dealer in OKC. Not the type of car they normally had on the lot so I asked about it. Guy said it would not run, I asked him to crank it over. I gave $200 for it paid on a Visa card and pushed it off the lot to run the valves then drove it home.

Not really crazy... but some decent trading...

Bought clean '95 F150 for 3500 bucks...
Traded truck for a kid's fully restored '65 Mustang 1 year later...
Sold Mustang for 7000 1 year after that...
Ran into kid with my old truck as he was putting on a For Sale sign... bought back truck for 2500 bucks. He installed a nice stereo, fixed the leaky trans and only put 5000 miles on it in the one year he had it.

I love trades like that.

Best / quickest flip I ever made came courtesy of a buddy of mine who was delivering pizzas in his 240Z. He told me of this old man that had two '68 fastback Mustangs in his backyard wasting away in waist high weeds. I investigated and bought the pair for 1000 bucks... the next day I sold the pair to Unique Performance in Dallas (who used to build the Eleanor replicas) for 8000. They came and got 'em, no questions asked 2 days later.

The Mustangs were crap, but they bought them sight unseen. Both were 6 banger coded cars, no options, and both had been drag raced hard with half assed V8 conversions.

Still wish I woulda kept one though...

In the late 70's I had purchased a 73 Road Runner with a bad tranny for $50.I fixed the trans and was in a gas station and a kid ask if I would trade for a Hemi GTX that wouldn't start. Got $100 to boot ,wirering was melted on the starter from th exhaust and had it running in about 2 hrs.
Drove it for a year and sold it for $3200.

Just two years ago I was given a 66 nova that a tree had fallen on,It was rough and no drivetrain. We had cut the tree up and winched it on a trailer and was at Subway eating on the way home. A guy came in and wanted to buy the Nova. When we delivered it I told him I didn't want the money I would just trade for all that old car stuff. Three 28-29 cowls, two coupe rear 1/4's ,5 doors, two A frames, two front fenders, and a bunch of front and rear axles including some hyd. wide 5 brakes . We we both happy with the trade and I since have done more business with him.

32 Ford Tudor body, hood, shell and headlight bar w/lights for $600 in the late 70s, sold it for $1850 3 days later, bought a 33 Tudor with a running SBC hooked to the OEM stuff and decent paint for $1700, sold that a week later for $3750, then a 36 3W same drivetrain and needed the front fender put back on. Had a copper n white tuck n roll interior and a 59 Impala wheel. Picked it up for $1800 and sold it a month later for $4000. That was good money in those days. The killer was a 35 Packard 1201 8cyl, complete car with spares, the guy called it a 120 but it was the senior car on a 136" WB. $600. We started a restoration but family needs came up and we soldit for $5500. All we bought for it was $300 worth of paint. Those were the days. Now you need a really big knot of $$$$ to play like that. I wish I still had the 3w...

I'm the guy you call when you need to get rid of a car. these are two from earlier this year. I bought a 98 nissan altima from a friend of a friend. he said it grinds in gear and doesn't go and needs a new transmission. I figure, what the heck if I can get it cheap enough....so I offered $20 bucks. yes one single twenty dollar bill. when I got it home and was disconnecting the saftey chain I noticed that the drivers side cv looked odd...yep, broken cv joint. $80 later and I had a driving car. sold it for $3000 a month later....and immedietly bought a 94 toyota camry for $100 bucks that wouldn't start. one cheap relay later...and sold it a week later for $2000. I have a nose for finding this stuff.

Always a early B body fan, I spotted a 63 Plymouth Belvedere in the local trader. I had no money but wanted to check out the car anyway.
Drove about 30 miles to see it, loved it. A real "Old Lady" owned 2dr post 63 Belvedere, 37,000 orig miles, window sticker in glove box & orig key blanks, 318 poly and automatic. Mint interior. Price $2000.00

Told the guy selling for his neighbor how bad I wanted the car but didn't have the money at the moment but was going to try to come up with it.
This guy, a total stranger said " I see how bad you want the car, take it and get the money to me when you can" What I thought? So I drove it off. Straight to my bank,
the bank mgr came out looked at the car, and gave me the money.
Now we are talking 1980's, and they let me have the money on a '63 model. Ah, the good ol days.

Photo is after putting new wheels & tires on car.

Traded 4 WWW Tires for a complete '55 Chevy 2dr V8 car. The guy had gotten the '55 as partial payment from a customer and he needed WWWs for the '48 Fleetline he was building.

Traded a '48 Chevy radio antenna assy and some misc trim & interior pieces for a chopped '49 2dr Hudson project and a 4dr parts car. The guy was building a '48 coupe and needed a lot tiny hard get pieces that I had on 4dr parts car that a friend gave me.

My dad bought a '66 GT350 Shelby Mustang for 1500 bucks in 1976. CSX1692.

It was a little banged up, but it was a good driver! Sold it for much more in the 90's with a blown up 289...

At yard sale I bought 63 MG midget. The guy had a lot of parts thrown at it and it wouldnt start. "Positive Earth", ya know. I got it for 150 and pushed it around the corner and drove it home. The next day we drove it through the mountains and had a wonderful time. Puled into the driveway and the neighbor was watering hios grwass said he;d gimme a grand for it. He did too. In high school (1974) I bought a 65 F-85 olds cutlass 4 speed convertable for 100 and drove it to death.

Swapped a tired 348 4 barrell engine plus 400 bucks to get a 58 Impala Coupe with a 6 and powerglide, a 58 Pontiac Laurentian coupe with 350/350 and power brakes and steering, and a siezed 348 motor. The Impala had FULL quarter panels thrown in the back seat. Sold off the 350 and tranny, all the Pontiac parts, and the 6 cyl and PG to cover my costs. Rebuilt the 348 and am restoring the Impala. Both are Canadian cars. I cut the entire floor pan outa the Pontiac and am welding it into the Impala complete seat riser to toe boards, rocker to rocker. (The Canadian Pontiacs and Chevs shared the same platform as well as innner fenders!)

I needed a car trailer and found one in the classifieds, drove 90 miles and bought it. Got home and decided it needed too much work, but had a friend that needed one, so I took it over to his place. He said he wanted it, but had no cash, but a neighbor owed him some. He went and got the neighbour, who had no cash either, but had a boat to trade. I went and looked at his vintage 1966 Thermoglass that had been garaged since 1968, and said sure. On my way home I stopped to show it to a buddy , a tow truck driver, who said he wantd it and would trade me for his worked over 750 Honda Supersport, I said sure. I put the bike in my truck and stopped at the bike shop for a new back tire, and the mechanic asked if I'd sell him the bike, offered me $2500, I said sure. He said he had $1000 and the rest on friday, or $1000 and his 64 Ford shortbed. I took the truck and the cash. Next day I took my new truck over to my buddies place and gave him $650 plus a running 327 he wanted for the boat back and a new grille and misc Ford truck parts. I had left home the day before with $1200 to buy a trailer, and now had a cool truck, a cool boat, and $350 left in my pocket. I still didn't have a trailer, but who needs one when you have a friend with a tow truck? I smiled and went fishing.

last january i found a chopped 29 ford coupe body with a current non-op title on craigslist for $1000. i had shoulder surgery so i could not drive. i paypaled the guy $200 to hold it for me and to pull it off craigslist. the next week the doctor cleared me to drive so my first drive in 3 months was an 11 hour round trip to pick up the body. it also came with cherry tank, the old man said it was nos, and i think it is.

Traded a 750 Honda for a 63 Chrysler Newprort, that I still have.

I think the best one was the 69 Chev Kingswood 9 passenger wagon for $125.00, it had a 12 bolt posi, TH400 and best of all a 427. I then sold the 12 bolf for $225.00. So I ended up with a 427, TH400 for -$100.00.

Its OT but a guy had his 72 Chev LWB ps, pb, air, deluxe trim, painted and motor rebuilt. Paint was very nice but the motor smoked like crazy from day one. The guy was pissed because the motor guy wouldn't stand behind it. He said "A truck that don't run aint worth $300!" I said "I'd give that for it" He sold it to me and I drove it home smokin like crazy. 5 minutes under the hood and a new PVC and it ran perfect.

Bought ($100) a 64 chev when the owner said the oil pressure went out. Oil gauges plastic line got on the exhaust manifold and melted it.

Back in 1966, I traded a 1959 Olds 2dr, a 305 Honda superhawk, a portable TV and a nice watch I found on the beach for a Bradley GT ( vw chassis with wild looking glass body). The most memorable time with that car was getting pulled over on Pacific Coast Hwy by the California Hwy Patrol. I asked the cop "what did I do" He said him and his buddy figured the car was going to take off at 100plus and leave him. They just wanted to see what the hell it was. When I showed them the wimpy 50hp motor, they laughed.

In 1968, 2 friends and I bought a 1950 Ford coupe to travel from SoCal to Florida on a surfing trip of the Gulf. Paid 50 bucks for the car and found $ 40+ worth of change in the trunk. The car had about a full turn of play in the steering. As you can imagine driving down the crowned roads back then was an adventure.

Answered an ad in the local paper about a Chevy II. It wasn't running but I wanted it. The man told me it jumped time,, he took my $100.oo and left to run some errands and I was waiting for my buddy to show up to help me trailer it out of there.
Meanwhile I chatted with his wife and she said that the car was a sore topic for them as they were driving it as a daily driver and that he "gave it a tune up and it stopped working".
That's when I decided to look it over and see what I could find.It was mine because he had my money and I had the signed title.
So I looked,,No.1 top dead center, drop the distributor in,set the advance, trace the plug wires, snap em on,work the throttle-yes-had fuel, gap the points, turn on the key,,spark spark,,put the cap on,then the air cleaner. Got in started it up and she was like "wait a minute".
I drove off slowly with her saying "it wasn't for sale".
Then my buddy pulls in and with the owner behind him,,he was hanging out the window saying "Hold up a minute" and motioning me to stop. They were wanting to re-negotiate the deal as now it was running ,,,so I kept driving.I drove it home, my buddy loaded my car on the trailer and came some time later.
We laughed about that several times. I drove that little nova a couple of years. It didn't have a heater so I'd keep burning charcoal brickettes in the floorboard in a coffee can.
Weeze poor folks.

1957 corvette California car 2 owners, had a choice of $200 without motor or my 327 and $200 running with a 283 and 2x4. The 283 was tired so I took it non running for $200. Fell on hard times at 19 yrs old and traded it for a running cameo. It is still in the neighbor hood sitting in a garage that belongs to a buddy after 25 years as a competitive street and strip racer.
Now he would rather drink than race so there it sits.... but that's another story. MickeyC

Did some good deals in my life, but this was the best...

1998 I Sold a real ratty 34 Chevu PU for 400 bucks to a guy who managed a big offshore drilling co. When he told me what he did, I mentioned that I used to paint helipad signs back in the 80's in Houston. He asked if I would be interested in doing any now. I ended up doing 32 helipads in 6 months @$6200 each. Took about 2 days to do one plus room and board and all the good food you can eat.

In 1970 I worked with a guy who had a 1965 Impala SS, 300 hp, 4-speed convertible that had a bad valve, or so he says. The car had a terrible miss and would barely run; he was offered $350 as a trade for a new VW. I bought it instead for the $350, installed a new set of plug wire and a tune up. Buffed out the paint and sold it for $850 about a month later.

I traded a bottle of whisky for a 38 Chevy Sedan. Should have kept the whisky, would have been cheaper.

In the 70's, I had a very clean 74 Z-28/4 speed that I was asking $3300 for. A guy drives up from San Diego (120 miles?) in a nice 69 Vette convertible to look at it. He doesn't say yes or no, and leaves. A few minutes later it starts raining. A few minutes after that, the guy comes back. His wipers don't work and asks if I'll trade (his Vette's worth about $5000 then).

well this one is way off topic but here we go i bought a 1998 mercury tracer with a full fiberglass ground effect package with 4 new tires and a new bat.was told motor was probably gone as it missed horribly.and flooded.i boosted it for giggles after it was paid for and it started so i said screw it and headed for home with my buddy following me.made the 40km drive no prob but promptly stalled once home and would not go.took the new bat out and toook it back as it was under warranty exchanged it. put the new one in and drove that car without putting a single cent in in for 6 months.ended up tearing out the tranny one night and sold the car for 150 sold the batt for 50 and still have the full body kit siting here and it is in the midle of a sale for 100.so i will have -100 in a car that gave me 6 months faithfully.and looked real good doin it to.made all the honda civic boys jealous around here.and still have left over parts from the car for sale like aluyminum wheels and other odds and ends lol

its not that odd but its wheelin and dealin at its finest. bought a 97 dodge ram at auction. got it home and found out someone wheeled the crap out of it and cracked the transsmission all the way arround the transfercase extension. drove it for 4 months hoping it wouldn't gernade. then traded it for a 95 dodge dakota (dont worry the guy knew about the transmission) drove that for over a year till it started falling apart. then i traded the dakota (and some work fixing a motorhome) for a 79 jaguar v8 conversion (thats for sale now if anyone is interested) which ive been driving for over a year and a half. so. in the end i originally spent 4k on the ram and got 3 vehicles allong the way to drive. now im trading a quad for a suzuki samurai. lol to think i haven't bought a car in over 3 years lol I LOVE TO TRADE!!! anyone want to trade for the jag? lol

In the mid-'70s, a neighbor had a really sharp '50 Ford Club Coupe for sale. It was a V-8 car with 3-speed and OD. Looked a LOT like my Dad's '50 that he had in 1953 - baby blue with dual exhaust and glasspacks. The one I bought could've been the very same car, for all I knew, but doubtful. I drove by it several times over a few days, and finally stopped to ask about it. I figured I wouldn't be able to afford it, since I was a senior in high school then, and didn't have a bunch of cash. Guy says "I'll take three hundred for it!"...SOLD!

Drove back home, jumped on my bicycle with some cash in my pocket, and went back for it. Tossed the bike in the trunk. and drove home in my new prize! Had it parked in the driveway for maybe 15 minutes, with the "For Sale" sign still on it, when a guy drives up and asks if the Ford is for sale...my answer is "What'll you give me for it?" He drives it around the block, comes back, and says "How's $1,500 sound?"...SOLD!

Unfortunately, I never got a chance to show my Dad the Ford, as he was at work when all this happened! The buyer drove that car for at least two more years afterward. Shoulda kept that car! Had not owned another Shoebox Ford since, to my detriment.

Bought a new (used) truck a couple of years ago from a private party so i could not trade off my old 95 dodge Ram. Gas was about $5 / gal, so I couldnt even get anyone out to look at it.

Modified my Craigslist ad that I would trade for an abandoned rod project.

Had everybody and their neighbor with a 4 door skylark contact me until one guy call and says he would trade me for his 69 chevelle project with a fresh 350. I gave the guy my truck and $1000.

I didnt want a 69 chevelle much more than I wanted a 95 dodge, so back on on CL with an ad that I would trade for anything from the 20's-40's. 20 mins later a guy emails me that he want a chevelle and will trade me a running 1929 chevy. I gave him the Chevelle and $500.

So I guess not too crazy, but I the 29 in my avatar (which is rock solid, btw) for my old truck and $1500. I drove it last summer stock and just started pulling it apart for the new drivetrain.

Not "HAMB friendly" but I once traded a cheapo small B&W TV and a motorcycle helmet for a Plymouth "Gold Duster". It was originally an old lady's car that a buddy got when she couldn't drive anymore. Had 38K miles on it. 225 slant 6 and auto and had some dents but no rust. I drove that car for 3 yrs.

Deal 1

Bought a 76 6cyl Camaro for $250 to drop in a 350. It ran sporadicaly the guy says it has a bad timing chain. Aint no timing chain in a inline 250, turned out to be the coil wire was shot grabbed one out of the junk box and drove it for 6 months, sold it for $800.

Deal 2.

Worked at a body shop and drove a 66 skylark at the time. Guy I worked with said his budy had a skylark in the barn and wanted to sell it. Ok I call go look at it and it is a 70 GS 455 Stage 1. Got it for $500, it needed work. Never finished it and sold it off. Shoudl have kept that one.

I've done deals like that for ages. Once sold a '58 Dodge ragtop I paid $300 for, based on photos of it covered in 2 feet of snow, for $2000, in less than 48 hours. The worst part is if I'd waited and put it on eBay when the snow was gone, I probably would have gotten more - it was much better than I expected it was going to be.

Had an '89 Dodge Ramcharger - was out for sale for $100, guy said someone bought it and brought it back because it wouldn't go, and it needed a water pump too. I offered him $50 to have it gone that night. Turned out the trans was way low and when it got warm it would quit, did a fluid and filter and drove it about 1000 miles. Then I went to an auction to look at a "37 Chevy parts car" for a buddy, that turned out to be a '41 4-door stripped of most anything worth a crap, and here's a 1989 Suburban I didn't even look at because it was billed as low miles and I figured it would sell for more than I would have spent. Well, no, no one even bid until the auctioneer got down to $200.. so I ended up with that for $525. Then I put the Ram in the paper and sold it for $400 a couple weeks later.

So for all of $175 I had a 57,000 mile 350-700R4 Suburban that still runs and goes, but is rusted so bad it won't pass inspection anymore. Had that thing all the way to New Jersey and back. In fact used it to flat tow home the '91 Suburban I replaced it with.

I also picked up an '85 Diesel Suburban for $170 through an online auction, with a bad trans. Solid otherwise, a 3/4 ton, 98,000 miles on it. So I hit eBay and found an '86, bad motor, rebuilt trans, came with a replacement motor, for $500. Gave the guy $300 and let him keep the motor. Towed it back, stripped it, used the fenders/doors/hood/front seat on the '89 Suburban, saved all kinds of parts for the diesel, filled the shell with a bunch of scrap, and got $425 for it in the spring when scrap was high. So I have the diesel Sub with all the parts to convert to 700R4, tons of spares, and have all of $50 tied up in it.

In the early 90s a co-worker had an 85 Chevy Impala wagon, low miles, V8, O-drive, AC, loaded and everything worked but it smoked. I took a chance and I bought it for $300 which was the price of the new radiator he had just put in. I dropped the oil - black but no grittiness - and after putting in the pre-req 5 quarts very little was registering on the dip stick. A light bulb went off in my head and I let it sit o-night and the next day I check the dipstick and most all the oil registered. I pulled the valve covers and the whole thing was covered in old oil and such to the point that the weep holes to drain the oil back in to the pan were all clogged. I cleaned out both heads - never even removed them from the car - and changed the oil again and frequently for the next couple months and it never smoked again in the nearly 10 years we drove it, all over, up and down the east coast, helped us move, kids learned to drive on it, and it did damn well everything for us. I even found over $75.00 in coins in the car when I cleaned it all out! Not a hot rod vehicle but that car saved me enough money to build 2 hot rods while I owned it!

I wanted another old car but was broke... What to do. I found a 2003 Durango for $2500 that I washed and sold for $6500 the next week. Then I found a 2001 chev crew-cab for $1600 and sold two weeks later for $3200. Then I found a 2001 GMC for $750 and sold it the next day for $2150. Then I found the 53 Chev for $6000 from a buddy, I drove it for a year and sold it for $9250. Then I bought the go kart for my son, the ranchero and the roadster pick up all with money that I made from the equivilent of 1 weeks worth of work. Now I have a driver, a project and a car for my son.

At the time it didn't seem crazy (1967), but I bought a '55 Chevy BelAir Sport Coupe off a dealers lot for $35. It was a 6 cylinder with an automatic transmission and I had to go to the junkyard to get front brake drums and two tires and wheels, but we drove it home and only had $50 in everything. No rust and someone gave me a front fender.

I wish I had it now.

Back about 1985 , I was driving a real beater- a nasty, clapped out '75 Chrysler station wagon - complete with terminal rust, lifter noise, and about 210,000- plus miles on the clock. I had gotten that car about a year and half earlier by trading a guy 4 decent but unrestored model A Ford wheels , that'd I'd
found for $5 in a scrap yard, .The car was definitely on it's last legs, but being a wagon, and since it was already junk and I wasn't worried about hurting in more than it already was, it was great for picking up and hauling all kinds parts and other assorted junk around to swap meets. I was in a scrap yard - a straight metal recycling yard - not even an auto wreckers , one day, picking over their scrap metal piles, looking for more swap meet fodder. While I was in the yard, a tow truck came in and dropped off a really decent looking '72 Ford LTD. After driving over the scales and getting a weight ticket for it , he drove over and stopped next to the crusher and started unhooking the car. I was sorting through a pile of mosstly automotive junk, right nextto where he was dropping the car so I went over to check it out. The car looked really clean , with half decent paint and no visible rust or body damage . I looked inside and the interior was clean and nearly spotless. It was loaded too, with buckets, console, power windows, AC, remote mirrors etc, etc and only 90,000 miles showing on the odomiter. In addition all 4 tires were nearly new too - Firstone 721 radials, with the the nubs still showing in places. . While the driver was still unhooking the car, I popped the hood .Under hood was clean 351 Windsor and ton of new parts. The rad, battery, water pump, distributor cap, plug wires, master clyinder and belts all had been very recently replaced and were stil nearly new. Then I popped off the air cleaner and found a brand new rebuilt carb with the rebuild sticker still attached. I asked the driver what on earth was wrong was with the car and why was he scrapping it???. He told me he didnt really know the history of the car, other than he had gotten a call at 800 o'clock that morning from the owner to come and pick it up and scrap it. Apparently, in the last year months or so, the car hasd turned into a money-pit for the owner and he had spent at least couple of thousand dollars in repairs and new parts on the car and a just day or two before, he spent more money on it to have a rebuilt carb put on. Whoever had put the carb on never botherd to adjust the automatic choke and that morning, when the guy got into his car to go to work, the choke stuck and flooded the engine so it wouldn't start. That was the final straw! The guy was in a rage and so pissed off ' that his money-pit of car car wouldn't start even after he had just after just spent even more money to have the carb replaced, that he went back in the house and called a up towing company and said "Come and get this %!%X$* piece of *@%!* car and and scrap it!" So they did!. Under the hood I could smell gas and noticed that the choke was on. I jammed a screw driver into the carb to hold the choke plate open and got in the car and turned the key. Almost instantly it fired up and then dropped down an nice smooth idle! No knocks, no lifter noise, no smole, noting , just a nice smooth idle. I didn't know what else was wrong with it and I couldn't take for a test drive anywhere, but I decided to buy the car on the spot. I figured even if there was something major wrong with it, I could make some money by strippingit for parts and selling them. The only problem was that I only had about 40 bucks in my pocket that morning as I hadn't intended to buy a whole.car! What to to do? The car was next in line to be crushed. If I went home to get some more money, by the time I came back it would have been gone. I went inside the scale house and asked the yard manager how much he wanted for the car. The tow truck driver had already shown me his scale ticket and told me they had paid out $85 for it.. The yard manager thought about it for all of about thirty seconds and said "100 bucks" I didnt have a $100 on me though and the yard monkeys were already unbolting the wheels to get the car ready to drop into the crusher. I said, ok, I'll take it. The yard manger got on the P.A. systom and hollered to the yard monkeys to leave the wheels on and set it off to the side. But I didn't have the 100 bucks I needed. I looked over to my old beater Chrysler wagon in the parking lot. I ponted to it and asked the yard manager "what'll you give me for that?". "Drive it on to the scales" he said."and I'll tell you". Over the scales, the Chrsyler wagon being a lot heavier than the LTD paid out $105 ! After weighing the car, I went back inside scale house where I told the yard yard manger to give me $5 bill and the signed-over ownership for the LTD, which he did. Then I drove the Chrysler off the scales and parked it in the crusher row, right beside the LTD. I cleaned my stuff out of the Chrysler and pulled the plates off it. Then I put the plates from the Chrysler on to the LTD , loaded my stuff in and drove out! On the way home, I took it pretty easy, but the car ran great. The steering and brakes all felt good .and everything, including the AC worked. When I got it home, I removed the screwdriver I had used wedge the choke plate open , adjusted the choke linkage so it didn't stick anymore and that was it. I took the car in to a buddy's shop a day or two later to get a safety check so I could properly transfer my plates and insurance over to it and put the car in my name. Except for needing one tie-rod end and and the front half section of an e-brake cable it passed a legal safety, with almost flying colors. I drove that car for almost two years, hardly spending a nickel on it and then sold it for
$800!

Bought a running and driving 70 grand coupe cuda in 94 for 75 bucks off a druggie that needed the cash for his next high. It was banged in the front but the grille was good. No title of course but I did drive it home! 318 auto. Sold it about a week later for 800.

Not me, but when my father was 16 (1964), he traded away his half a a '32 Ford coupe to the other 1/2 owner (the thief is still a family friend) for a dwell meter and a 6-pack...Z'd frame, engine from a studebaker goldenhawk (my uncle had totaled the stude)...both the dwell meter and the 6-pack are long gone!

Bought a 57 Chevy 2 dr post back in the 70's for $300, Had a built 350 in it that was never hooked up. Pulled the motor and put it in my 37 coupe. Sold 57 body for $600.
4 or 5 years later a guy wanted to trade a 57 chevy for about $600 worth of work to his A. Decent car, fresh bodywork and primer, new glass and chrome, no motor so I swapped. Guy said it had title issues, never been transfered in several sells. When I got the title, you guess it, my name on the title. He did so much work I didn't even recognise it as my old car. A week later a guy walks in my shop and offered me $1500 for it so I sold it.

Another series of good deals I have had started with the purchase of a 1967 Dodge D200 pickup from a guy in KS, for a whopping $200, with a title. It ran and drove, but the cab floor and steps were non-existant - Fred Flintstone's pickup! I hauled it home, and began parting it for another '67 Dodge I had then. Sold probably a grand of parts off it, then made a pickup trailer from the bed and frame. Painted the trailer to match my much newer Dodge Cummins truck. Stuck some later Dodge wheels on it, and figured it was done. Essentially, I had a free trailer and made a few hundred bucks on the parts off the D200...not done yet!

Traded a neighbor the trailer for a complete 1968 Chevy C-10 that was in great overall condition, but the engine was locked up and the front clip was in the bed. I've got a whopping $200 in the trailer at this point, and traded straight-up for the C-10...

Ran the C-10 on Craigslist. Traded to the next guy for a '78 Yamaha 650 and a 3/4 ton Chevy pickup bed trailer. Sold that trailer for $250 cash. Traded the scoot for a brand new 9mm!

Not too bad for an initial $300 deal (truck plus fuel and tolls!)

Not exactly a car deal, but I went to a yard sale one day, and these people had their whole back yard covered in tables. There was a shed in the yard that was full of empty boxes, I assume they'd unload a box for the sale and throw the empty in the shed. I was a good 25 feet away when I caught a glimpse of a tail light between the boxes. I asked the lady what was hiding in the shed, and she told me it was he son's motorcycle.
We talked a bit, and she told me her son had gone off to college 2 years ago and left it at home. I asked if it was for sale. She told me if I'd move the boxes I could look, so I did, and after moving 4 or so boxes I uncovered a 1978 Triumph 750 Bonneville, Silver Jubilee Edition. Now I was indeed excited, and she knew it. She told me she'd call her son and ask him about it, so I left her my number and waited by the phone for a couple days.
The son calls me 2 days later, and tells me that when he gets out of college, he plans to travel for a couple of years, so he basically has no need for it. He told me the bike had been sitting for 2 years, so he didnt even know if it'd run. Said I could have it for 100 bucks, and I could give the money to his mom.
Man, I never cleaned out a shed so fast. I rolled the bike outside, and turned on the key. The headlight was very dim, and the gas had a funky smell, but it fired up on the second kick and I drove it home without a single hiccup from the motor. I changed the plugs and oil, and rode that bike almost every day for 3 years. Never should have gotten rid of that one.

61Falcon ex racer, solid front axle, empty shell of a car, delivered for 200bucks. When he got to the house, he ended up taking a plymouth minivan (nice car, bad 604 tranny) instead of the cash. I had previously gotten the van for free.

In the early 80's I bought a '71 Charger RT w/ factory Ram Air at a barn sale for $75. No engine or trans but decent orig. paint and interior. I left with a buddy to go get a car trailer and when I got back someone offered me $600 for it, so I sold it. Didn't even have to move it. I thought I was doing good at the time.

Bought a 1976 Nova 4 door for $200. Had to pay an extra $25 for the tires that were on it.. Drove it FOREVER and finally blew up the motor at 196k.

Not my story, but a good friend of mine bought a 76 Chevy Camaro from a guy for $150. Had a Corvette 350 in it and a 4 speed. Said the motor was seized. He tries to turn over the motor and it won't budge, but it does move in reverse.

Goes home, get his tools and pulls the inspection cover, all while still sitting in his yard. Seems the flywheel cracked and wedged in the starter. Goes and get a new flywheel, remember, it's still sitting in his yard, put it in, starts it up and drives it away.

Guy was pissed! But it was a done deal.

While living in Texas I traded my 1969 H.D. Sportster for a very solid non running 1953 Ford Pickup. I also got a small handfull of cash to boot. The non running original 272 in the truck turned out to be a non original, great running 312. Only required basic tune up parts to get it running well. The guy also threw in a 3x2 intake and carbs. After I got the interior and shag carpet out I found an Inox "bananna" knife, a few condoms and $3.00 in silver coins. I also found that the body was nearly rust free and had very little bondo in it. Loved that truck, and drove the wheels off of it. I sold the truck years later but kept the knife and the coins. Hate Sportsters to this day, but still love the old Fords.

I have lived on the same street since 1971. I am 8 when we move there and on the end of street sits a 49 ford trk flat v8. not running. In 77 people move 4 blocks away, I watch them rope the truck up the street. 1982 I am 19, buy the trk for 150, still not running. rope it BACK to my house.Inst batt, filed points and cranked it on THE SAME GAS IN THE TANK! trans had a hole in the side, replaced it, drove it til 84, traded for a 55 chev 2dr. Drove 55 2 yrs, sold it, bought it back 1 yr later, 1987. The same yr that I bought the house at the end of the street!

1.Customer came into my work and asked if anyone was into older cars, he needed to get rid of one. 1964 Pontiac Tempest 2dr 6cyl/3 on the tree. I did a basic tune up and drove it for a year as my daily- price FREE Sold-$1800

2.The kid I sold my 54 Chevy to needed to get rid of it, he also wanted his 06 Charger "murdered out" and his brothers truck 2 toned. It took 2 weeks (a few hours a day) to do the body work he wanted and spray it Satin Black, brothers truck took 1 week. Total cost involved $120-Rustoleum Satin and Acetone, and I finally got my 54 back!!!

You didn't used to live in Placerville, CA did you?

I knew a guy named Joe who traded a very nice GTO dead even for a very tired Honda MT250 just because he really wanted to go riding with us. This was around 1979.

Originally he had a p.o.s baby blue 65 mustang with the 'classic' warrior chick riding tigers mural airbrushed on the hood that we always made fun of, and then somehow managed to trade that and some cash for the GTO which was just an outstanding looking car. We thought maybe he wasn't as stupid as we had thought. Then he traded the GTO for the bike and proved us wrong. He worked at a gas station and every time someone came in riding a bike, he asked them if they wanted to trade for the car. So of course the guy with the Honda took him up on it.
Dead even.
No shit.

Was taking a leisurely drive in my 57 Pontiac in NOrthern Oregon when I pass a house with a cherry-pie 55 Pontiac hardtop parked in the weeds....I stopped to inquire and was told the car was his mother's car.."Blew up" out on the hiway. Said I could have it for free but he wanted to keep his wheels and new tires. I busted ass back to town for 4 wheels with rag tires and got the title...all free!
I dragged the car off the guys property on the side of the hiway and yanked both valve covers to find 2 busted rockers on one bank and another one on the other bank...had my buddy drive me 8 miles up the road to a junk yard where I scored 3 used rockers. Bolted it all up and fired the 287 right up...even had a full tank of gas. I waved to the guy as I drove it off. I kept it a long time, selling it to my dad who also drove it forever...

A few years ago a buddy of mine was reading a three year old Hemmings and saw a pretty good deal on a dual sidemount 1936 Cadillac..We wondered if they still had it and called..Yes, they still had it and were desparate to get it off the property as it had been sold and said if we came and removed the car they would give it to us..So, off we went to Kansas, gave them a couple hundred dollars and hauled off a nice Cadillac..

In 1995 I got a 76 Nova SS for free from a buddy when we got it stuck on a snowbank. He had bought it for $200 and we tried launching it Dukes of Hazzard style over a 8 foot tall snowbank and into an abandoned building. It slowed down so fast going up the snowbank that it just stopped on top. All four wheels were in the air. The snowbank was partially on City property so a cop climed all the way up there to put the orange "abandoned vehicle" sticker on the window. This was all by the shop that I worked at. The next day a guy walks into the shop and asked about the car on the hill. I told him $75 and I get to keep the emblems. I still have those emblems today. We had a lot of fun at that shop but there is a brand new Home Depot there now.

Going the other way, I bought an 86 audi coupe for $100 that "didn't stop, didn't charge, and didn't start." I bled the brakes, put the bolt back in the alternator bracket and tightened it, and replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch and traded it for a springfield xd 40 with lockbox and 5 clips.

4 legged kind. Some people left a rent house with a bunch of junk in the yard in my neighborhood. I was only about 14 at the time but wanted something ANYTHING to get me around. I saw this old motorcycle and thought maybe I could get it running. So I ask the new renter, a hispanic lady hanging up clothes if I could have it. She also had a goat tied to a tree nearby. She said if I could find a home for the goat, I could have the motorcycle. She said they were going to make tacos but, I guess she didn't want to see him slaughtered. So here I am leading this goat over to a house a few blocks over that always had goats. I told them the deal I made and they happily took the goat. The bike ended up being junk and I sold it for scrap. Had I had any sense at the time, I would have tried to make some money off the goat or kept him.

In '07, I guy from church, knowing I'm a scrapper, dropped off his '86 Grand Marquis [one owner, 150K] after the A/C compressor froze & launched the belt. He was "DONE!" with the car, so I gave him $100. Two hours later, I sold the car for $500 after I swapped the compressor & belt from another junk Marquis I had in the driveway.

In 1990, my brother called from the Honda dealer he sold for and said "we got one of those 4-door Mustangs you like, come & get it for $1995--the boss says 'today only'. Tomorrow the price goes to $2995." I had been looking for an '84-'85 Ford LTD LX [the Fox-bodied LTD with the 5.0 HO] but I didnt have the cash, so I put the 55k-mile, no rust car on my VISA. The dealership got paid, but the charge NEVER showed up on my bill!! I drove that car for 5 years, sold it, got it back, wrecked, for $200. Put a '79 Mustang pace car front clip on it, shorty headers, etc. It finally rusted away in 2000, but I would still be driving it if I had owned a MIG welder then...

In the 70's I had a shop and delivered a Corvette for a customer about 100 miles away. The guy that I delivered the Corvette to had a 58 Chevy convertible in the back yard that he wanted rid of.We loaded the 348 tri power in the trunk and rolled it on my trailer.

I stopped by a friends shop on the way home and he just flipped out over the car.I sold it to him for a crisp $100 bill.

Oh,well!

2 weeks ago . I got a 1963 pontiac Catalina 4 dr for $200. A complete car with a little rust nice interior.got complete rebuild kit for the front end ball joint tierods bushings, new disc brake conversion . new power booster and master cylinder, new front shocks, 4 new radials, no rust in the trunk. the only thing I had to do was have new bushings put back in the drivers side .
he started to tear the suspension apart to put on the disc brake kit decided to rebuild the front suspension. then things went bad for him lost his job and ended up losing his house too the house he was moving to wasnt that big so he had to get rid of the car.
I found the car here on the classified and it finally was listed for free . it ended up only being 10 minutes from my houseI went over to look at it and found it to be a REALLY nice car I paid him $ 200 .

Drivin down the road seen a 1964 custom cab swb on a trailer. I get behind them and they pull into a salvage yard. We jump out my truck ask, what are you doin? guy tells me he's scrapin the truck. I ask how much you think you'll get he says 100 bucks me and my buddies pool our money and whadya know we had $101.50. So I hand the guy the money. Soon as we are fixin to shake hands the Junkyard owner runs out yelling... What the hell is goin on here. Guy says I just sold this truck to these kids. Junk man starts gettin mad and asks how much he tells him 100 junk man starts throwin a it yellin I'll give ya 250. So I figure hell, guess we ain't gettin it. THe guy that sold it to us tells the junk man "What part of.. sold it to these kids don't you understand??" turns to me and basically says where ya live I'll deliver.

I was at an estate auction about 10 years ago. I really wanted the 39 Lincoln Zephyr 4 door that was there. I bid to my limit of $1000 and lost it to the next bid at $1050. The winning bidder told me that $1050 was his limit and I would have had it for $1100. I was just pissed - kind of spitting and stamping my feet on the ground. The auctioneer saw this and said, Sir, "maybe you want this one". So I threw my hand up and said, "what the hell!"

I got a 33 Chev 2 door for 10 bucks!

I was at a house party years ago and my buddy gets to talkin to the home owner. The guy had a 66 Chevelle two door post with a 305 tuned port (not installed). Later we decided to order pizza and the home owner didn't have cash for his share so my buddy jokes and says "I'll pay your share and you give me your car"... Drunk home owner says "OK". My buddy sold it the next week for $2500.

I bought my 1932 5 window that had the roof removed back when I was 14 in 1994. the guy tried talking me out of even coming to look at the car and he only wanted $1500 for it. i figured what's a 2 hour drive, even if it's junk! pop's took me down there with my summer lawn money when the guy found out it was a 14 year old kid who he talked to on the phone he just about shit. I went and looked at the body that he had advertised as a cabriolet. well, it was without windshield posts and somebody had put exhaust tubing around the tops of the doors and welded em shut and cut the floor out to channel the car. Sitting underneath there was a usable stock frame that he said was part of the deal. The body was a little beat up but very solid and came with a 1960 home built title. when I told him I wanted the car he said if I made the check out to some childrens orphanage in texas he'd sell it to me for $500. Only thing i could think of to say was "will ya take four?" lol, he said no but I had to ask. I loaded it up and got the heck out of there before He changed his mind! He was a lawyer in CT and a real nice guy. He had a nice 32 roadster too.
here's how it sits 16 years later with a new floor and some hand made windshield posts and working doors.

I used to do security at an auto auction and i watched teh repos come in all the time. 1 day a 86 Lotus Esprit cam in and it sat down back for months. One of the dealers {now one of my best friends} is into that type of car so i told him about it. The action rolled the car threw the lanes for 3 weeks with the details being it had a bad motor and tranny. I told Jason that they never made a key for it even tho they have a locksmith on duty and that it apears to be a GM lock Cyl. Would you believe an gm master key started it? He bought it on a 5000 if bid cleaned it up and sold it for 20+ All Because the lock smith didn't look at it.

I bought a 72 Chevelle that had just had $2000 worth of work done on it for $100 because the guy needed that much more cash to buy a numbers matching engine for his Corvette.

I used to stroll the trailer parks for old cars and made a few deals over the years. I traded a nice polished wood "grant" steering wheel to a guy for a 63 Chevy Bel-Air four door that used to be a police car. The people renting the trailer had been thrown out and this car was in the back yard. Someone had spraybombed flames on it and had put a 427 in it. It was winter time but after about 2 hours work I had it running. I tried to drive it out of the yard but the ice dragged me right into the fence. I damaged the quarter and broke the fence. I managed to drive it home (with a dealer plate) and sold it a week later.

LMAO!!!!!! I have read some really awesome replies in here. "A few " my wife asked what was I laughing so hard about? I said you have to read some of these!
When I was building my 36 fat fender chevy. I needed a glove box door.
A friend told me about a 38 chevy cab on frame, no fenders or drivetrain and it was in Kettering, ohio. I drove out and found it sitting in a backyard. The cab was so rough. The guy said $200.00 for the whole thing. I said I really only needed the glove box door. how much for just the glove box door? he said $200.00. I bought the truck took the cab and sit it down on a 1968 chevy 4x4 frame it had a 350 chevy motor. as I was making body mounts. A guy around the corner said "I have seen some wild things around this garage but this one I want. if you will take $1500.00 cash I will pull it home. Sold it. Soon as my wife digs up those photos I will post it. it had 38'' tires and really looked wicked just sitting there.

Traded a 60 Chevy 4 door that I rolled for a 60 Impala 2 door HT that was not running. Guy wanted the 283 out of the 4 door. I got the 2 door running and drove it all through HS in the late 70's. Sold it and bought a 58 Impala 2 door HT for 100.00 that needed some work. Drove it for a while and sold it for 500.00. Wish I still had both of them........

Last year I traded a 1954 Ford convertible in very, very rough shape and was cut apart in pieces when I found it for a cherry 40' Mercury 4 door sedan! 2 years ago I traded some welding/labor for a nice complete 53' Olds 88 2dr and a 1951 Kaiser Vegabond! A friend of mine back in 1972 bought a 69' Mustang Boss 429 with a warmed over Boss motor that hardly ran it was so radical for $600! The guy was a big time doper and needed the money.

When I was about 15 I traded a plastic POS electric organ I bought at an auction for 20 bucks for a pretty nice 63 Impala SS. They had the plug wires backwards wouldn't pull itself, got a little pissed when I drove it off. Bought a 67 chevy CST pickup for 75 bucks, put a set of points and a battery in it and drove it home, sold it for 750.

I bought a car out from under my boss once.

Running wrecker on an interstate service station, 2 guys come in and want to sell their car to a junkyard, it "blew the rings out". Parked 2 miles up the highway, all they got are keys in their hand.

Boss wouldn't pay. It was 5pm friday. He says the final deal is we'll tow it in, take what we want, if the junkyard pays anything for it, we'll mail it to ya. Take it or leave it. Boss rolls out the door smugly, he's got em by the balls. The boss is a real piece of work, and routinely throws tantrums over $5 mistakes, and they end with a firing. I'd actually given my 2 weeks notice earlier in that day, the boss was notorious about taking 6 months to implement a raise, and trying to pull that crap on me

Anyway, boss is gone, the car owners mull it over for a few minutes and start to walk away looking for cash in hand. Told em I'd pay $30 on the spot.

Fixed my new car over the weekend by swapping the ign module. Drove it to work monday, beat the boss there. He comes in and looks it over real close. I mention getting it fixed over the weekend for nothing, reach in thru the window and it starts with a flick of the key. At this point he's delighted, the car's worth several thou as it sits. He's talking about selling his daily because this car's so much better.

This is the point I calmly explain how every time I tried to take initiative on his behalf, he threatened to fire me. And the price of not trusting my judgement was sitting right there in front of us. If only he'd trusted me and paid my raise on time.

Great car. Drove it daily for several years. But the most valuable thing was that lesson about the true nature of employer & employee.

Bought a cassette deck for $15 from a friend who was broke.
Swapped for a 62 Ford, 6 banger 3 on the column,
next day swapped for a 54 Chevy, stovebolt 6, 3 on the column, foot high shackles, and orange shag carpeting.
next day swapped for a 66 Dodge Coronet 500 convertible, 383 4-speed. Motor in pieces.......that was in 1974. Within 6 weeks, had it together in time for high school graduation. Still have that car too!
I think it's worth a little more than my original $15 investment, even with inflation.

A guy that I went to high school with was late on his rent and asked me for the $135 that he needed. I was in school so I didn't have much cash so I said sure but you need to give me some collateral. I got his baseball card, comic book and coin collections as well as his 1968 GMC truck. He moved away before he paid me so I got to keep it all. I took the coins into a collectors shop and they gave me $150 on the spot. That truck was a good parts hauler for about two years.

traded 8 Mexican bags:

for 2 American shoeboxes:

The orange '57 is a fairly rare sedan delivery with windows.

I sold them years ago and they went to the Pismo Beach / Arroyo Grande CA area. I'd like to get in touch with the buyer but only remember his name was Dennis and he owned a nice '55 Cameo pickup.

It might be 25 years back now I had an I-H Traverall 3/4 ton 2 wd 4 spd. A guy asked if I wanted to swap for a car. I said stop with the car. Well he did a 70 GTO Ram Air Conv 4spd. Even trade but I had to give him about $100 for the tires, He owed that to his brother for them.
Then I sold that to a guy for $$ and 2 Firebirds one ws a Formula 400 4spd.
Too bad I wasn't a Pon guy. Sold them too.

In 86 we lived on some land and needed a truck.

Old guy at work , Mr. Linville, said he had one that ran and was respectable enought to run the kids around in. $600, on time, $50/mo, no interest.

I go to his old farm in Kernersville NC. 50 GMC, longbed. Chalky black. 1/2 ton truck with 3/4 springs. Odometer had 67K miles. Cracked old 600x16 tires. Said his dad put them on in about 1961. Wood bed almost complete.

Turns out they bought it new and used to deliver milk to winston salem in it.

I started it up, drove it home, and even commuted in it for the better part of 3 years. Took a 7 inch sears buffer and some polish and put a black mirror shine on the cab.

Three on the tree, side air and front air scoops, battery cover would raise up at speed. 50mph max. One tailight, no turnsignals.

Used to tow kids around the neighborhood with it with ski ropes and roller blades till the highway patrol shut us down.

About 96 had to sell it. Went to a welder guy at my new job site. He and his boy put it on a trailer and towed it to asheville. My son and I had waxed that truck all the last night. Guy said all down I-40 people were thumbs-upping him and waving. Went to a good home. I bet he still has it.

What I didn't know was the original owner that same month sold another guy at work a beautiful 48 ford tractor for about the same money. But I couldn't afford it anyway.

I've bought lot's of cheap cars but the craziest deal was an expensive one. Paid 23 thousand for an unrestored 67 442 W-30. It was decent, ran well but a little worn, I wanted a driver. The more I looked into it the more I realized how rare it was. I went through all the paperwork and found the original owner's name in Bremerton Washington, googled him and found a phone #, called for several days, no answer so I left my name and number. The guy calls me back and says hell yes he remebers the car, bought it off the lot april of 67 and went drag racing. He sent me the pic below. I asked him if he had any other stuff on the car and he said he thought so but wouldn't be home for a couple of months as he did trade shows. he calls me in Dec 07 and says he sending me a package. He sent both original window stickers, drag tickets and some other pics. I then decided the car should go to someone who would preserve it so I stuck it on Ebay with a 28k reserve. Hits reserve the first day. Turns out to be one of about 5 automatics left and the most documented and retained all it's original parts. After a long 7 days it sold for 58 thousand, most money I've ever made on a car.

In the late 80's I owned a 76 cutlass as a driver. It was lowered with centerlines. I put it up forsale for 1200. Over the course of the next two years I take a deposit from three different guy's, 300, 250 and 275. Same story with all three, when it comes time to pay up they are gone. Two of the guys had move out of state, the other his relatives didn't know where he went. 3 years after deciding to sell it, I sell the wheels and tires for 250 and the car for 1300. I did ok...

traded a box of built models and some cassette tapes for a '57 Dodge Coronet 2dr ht, no motor or trans, but had a '63 Chrysler 383/TF to put in it... that was 1985
traded a red, white, and blue Datsun 510 for a '66 F100 with 390, 4v, at... around 1993 or so (it wasn't the "cool" 510, it was the late job)
traded a 1969 English Ford Cortina GT as part of a deal for a 1962 Lincoln; the GT had the shifter pop out in my hand going from 2nd to 3rd
had some go the "wrong" way too. not talking about those.

For my 49' F-1.
Decent wad of cash, Four 1979 Cadillac chrome steel/wire basket rims & One MTX 700 Watt amp. Only the cash was the expense, the other stuff, given to me free.

I reroofed a 5sq. garage for an elderly church member. Inside were a 1961 Cadillac and 1969 Dodge Leberon. Both ran but had been parked for sometime. I did the roof free of charge and she generously gave me both cars. I still get a kick out of that one.

I bought a 38 Pontiac 4 DR Touring Sedan from the original owner with 30K mi. - a Stanford University prof. Perfect exterior/ interior & the radio worked (Seeberg speaker) etc. (No fender spare tire wells).

I was in college and the seller sympathized with my ability to pay a lot so she said she'd take $1 for ever year newer than 1900 and I paid $38.00!!

Bought a '65 Gran Prix for $50 in 1977.Had a cracked block.Ran but got hot and would stop running after about a mile.Had it sitting in the parking lot of a gas station I worked at.Drunk came in one night and said he needed a car.Offered me $300 for the GP. I took it and off he went.I waited 5 minutes, fired up the wrecker and went down the street and there it sat.Nobody around.Hooked it up and dragged it back to the station.Drunk never came back looking for it so after a week I stuffed another 421 in it and sold it

Probably the best one I ever did was when I acquired my Olds powered chopped 54 Chevy. It had been sitting under a friend of mine's body shop(an old barn actually)for several years and had a LOT of hornet's nests in it.The owner had a 63 Avanti he was going to restore and I had a Delco AM/FM radio in my sedan delivery that had,"STUDEBAKER" emblazoned across the front.Long story short I swapped the radio for the Chevy. This was 1974.
I sold the Chevy a couple years later for $300 after the windshield had a rock pitched through it and it was radically reworked by the new owner.
After this owner passed away a couple years ago,Paul(the original owner/builder) bought it from the owner's widow and now is going to do a restoration on it.As a side note;the Studebaker Avanti is STILL awaiting restoration and he still has the radio too! Here are a couple of pics when I owned it.

I stole a Chevy II by accident, then sold it back to the owner for $100!

The car was left at a rental house and when I asked about it the land owner told me to take it. It was towed to my house by a friend that owed me a favour then I realized I didn't have any paper work and the real owner was storing it at his "FRIENDS". I found out who owned it and I told him the towing was $100. He was glad to have it back. My friend made money towing it to his storage place too! I was going to part it out....

i turned 16 the summer 1988. a family friend gave me a 77 cutlass that was pretty well used up. the agreement was i cut the grass for the summer in trade for the car. deal was made, she handed me the keys and title. turns out we had a drought that summer, record heat, very little rain. grass didnt grow much, i cut it twice. i had about 4 hours time invested in earning my first car.

Mid 70' traded $200 bucks for a chopped top '30 model A coupe, bought a frame for 10 bucks, won a set of coil shocks at a car show and sold the whole thing for $1500. Around the same time a friend gave me a '38 chevy 2 door sedan, i had to many cars at the time so i sold it for $150 hated it every since...that was a great car. 3 years ago guy gave me a '53 studebaker champ, he had owned it 25 years, wife left him and all he had left was the car, sold it a year later for $3000. One year ago the guy across the street gave me a '61 studebaker lark, great body missing motor, still have it..

Bought a 1954 Ford wagon for $25.00 back in 66, got it running and was driving it home when some fool hit me head on. Nobody hurt and he was all worried about loosing his license so I sold him the car for $50.00.

I bought a 1936 Mercedes 230 6 cylinder for 3500 euro from an old man in Holland a few years ago. The car came originally from Russia where the Germans had left it after the war. The Russians had repainted it in ugly white and all the chrome in flat black. I repainted it a saturday morning in German army grey, put some army marks on it and sold it on the German @bay for 10000 euro; that is 6500 euro for a tin of paint!

In 1951, Hayward Calif, my Father decided to build a rental house on our property.
He needed a truck, so he made a deal with a local Cheese-maker. He got a model A
1 ton truck and a Parmesan Cheese for $150.00. We ate that cheese for years, in 1985 my mom still had a little piece of it.

bought a nice 80-s olds cutlass brougham diesel, no rust, drive perfect, new tires, perfect paint, ac worked, but nobody wanted it because of the diesel. got it for 250 bucks

bought a 350 olds from the junkyard for 25 bucks, and dropped it in. turns out the 350 had a bad starter, so I put the diesel starter on it. woohoo that thing would spin.

sold the car 2 days later for 1500.

I worked at a junk yard in 1988 and was in charge of buying cars for the yard and got a call from a guy with a ot 71 Mach I with 16.000 miles on it Original owner car. Went to look at it as they just dragged it out of the garage after 15 years sitting full of dust but real great condition. Asked how much they needed as I thought it was in to good of shape to go to the junk yard and the old guy said $250.00 . I was blown away and then told him the car would be a fast sell at $2500.00 in the condition it was in. Then I got the story behind the car. The son was the owner and years ago he had an accident hitting and killing a pedestrian with the car and it had affected the son so badly that the car was repaired and then parked never to see the light of day since. I then retold the dad how much the car was worth in my opinion and told him to talk it over with his son and if they still wanted it gone I would be at his call to take it away. Driving away I thought was I stupid I should have just hooked it up shut up and kept it but thats not me. The rest of the day I thought how I let it go. When I got home after work I get a call from the older gentleman saying they would like the car out of the yard a.s.a.p. and can I OFFER him more $$ after all I told him what I thought the car was worth. The best I could come up with was $500.00 and he said sure come and get it. I went to pick up the car and for fun I boosted it in his drive way and with the shop dealer plate I drove it home. I ended selling it to a friends 16 year old two days latter for a grand still way under retail value then. It has been totally restored now and still owned by my friends son.

In the late 80's I was working in Stamford, CT and drove a pickup truck.
The city was exploding with construction then and one of the women who
worked in the next department was losing her apt as the building was being torn down to build an office building. She decided to move in with
her boyfriend who lived about 3 miles from where I did- and asked me if
I could move some stuff for her- I took 3-4 truckloads after work on my way home and on the last one she asked if I wanted her old vw. I figured
it would be something to play with so I said yes- Went ober to her landlords house, there was a barn in back- opened it and there was the
VW- a 1964 Karmen Gia with 22,000 miles on it. The battery had died some 5 years previous and she left it sitting- I put in a sears 6 volt battery, filled one flat tire and towed it home. The clutch had frozen so
I put it on jackstands, started it up, ran it up in second gear and pumped the clutch till it broke free.

Sold it for $2500, used the money to build a 2 car garage.

1933 Ford 3 window coupe body, frame, doors, deck lid, dash.......$185 to haul it away. Someone did a really bad top chop on the top center roof area.

I finished out the roof (the only ratty part of the chopped top, the posts and doors were done rather well), primered it up nice and pretty, sold it for $1500.00

Saw it at the Pate swap meet next year for $5000.00 in the same condition as I sold it.

We all made money, but I wish I had it back!

Back in 1976, 2 years of hauling hay from field to barn, shoveling cow sh__ after milking, spreading said cow sh__ in the field's and cleaning chicken coop's for a 1955 Chevy BelAir two door post with no engine or transmission.
I fully understand why Colonel Sanders wanted to kill chickens !

it was a hot summer day and i was drinking a pepsi, talking to the neighbor across the street. he had an early 70's impala with four flat tires sitting in front of his house and i asked what he was going to do with it.. he said "man, i can't even get someone to come and tow it away, right now i'd trade if for a cold pepsi" deal done, i air up the tires, pushed it over to my side of the street.. a couple of weeks later i had some kids (maybe 16 years old) come to the door and ask if i wanted to sell it.. i told them it didn't run and asked em' how much they had?? they dug in their wallets and came up with, i think it was $43.00... i said bingo, that's exactly what i want for it..(really) they said, they paid me, left and came back to push it home (they were on bicycles).. apparently they didn't make it home, pushed it out in a field and stripped it. the guy i had got it from got a ticket for abandoning a vehicle.. i still laugh when i think about that deal....

Short and sweet. Traded a box of ten Maxell blank tapes for a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T. No rust, no dents, paint was dull, wheeled it out. Ran like a champ. Can't beat it.

Traded my 1965 Corvette, title-for-title, for a bank repossessed 1979 Mercury Capri with 1,700 miles on it. Also included in the deal was a brand new washer & dryer for my wife, and a VHS video recorder for myself. (back in 1980, those things were a $1,000) Oh, and by the way, she got the Capri as well. Sure wish I had that Corvette today ... DUMB!

Had a friend call me and tell me to pick up his one owner '65 GTO frm his Ex-wife's house. Gave it to his son and he showed his ass and eventually broken the timing gear set. (Ponchos were bad for that). I towed it home, put a timing gear set in it and drove it for several years. He would NEVER take a nickel for it after years of badgering him, so I gave up.\Here it is after I repainted it.

In 1969 I traded a 327 short block that I had $45.00 in, even steven, for a 66 Gto, 389/4spd running and dr iving complete car, but in primer. About the same time, bought a 58 vette with a bad trans for 600 and sold it the same day for 900, then got paid to put a trans in it. Also bought a 66 vette fastback wrecked, for 600 and a 67 coupe with no engine for 700. Bought a set of 67 corvette knockoffs for 2,000 and sold them for 5400 in less than 5 minutes. Haven't had a good deal since, at least it seems like it!

Usually this kind of stuff never happens to me but one time I got lucky. Someone tells me about an old Falcon for sale near where I live. I go to check it out and the car has been sitting outside for along time. Looks OK, does have some rust, but brakes are locked, it doesn't run, and it smells real musty inside (maybe that smell is mouse sh%^). Tells me he wants $1500.00 for it with a bunch of parts. Opens the garage and there are three 50 gallon buckets full of stuff, plus some engine blocks, a toploader, and Mustang body parts from a 1971-73 car. I buy it all and my friends want to have me committed. Actually I'm saying to myself WTF did I do this for. To date I've sold a little over $3,000.00 worth of that "stuff" (one part being a Boss 302 distributor on ebay for $1,164.00). I still have the car, it now runs well and is registered. I'm still selling the rest of the parts off. Is this a great country or what?

I bought a 63 ford galaxie(?) for 15 bucks in 1970. the guy said it had a bad transmission, I drove it home, put in a motor mount and sold it to my best friend for $75.00. He lent it to a guy who ran it into a tree. Almost killed the kid. when kompact kar corner had just started in Lynnwood, I could have traded my 68 datsun pickup for a 58 vette if I would have thrown in $100.00. I refused. stupid me......

There's been a few, best one maybe the old Ford laying on it's side in the woods near where I grew up. I asked the land owner if it was for sale, he said "Ya gotta ask Neil, down the road". I go ask Neil..He says "Yep" and says "4 or 5". I say "4 hundred for that "? He comes back with "No...4 or 5 bucks dummy" I bought it. '34 Ford sedan delivery. I sold it for $150 to the guy who was going to haul it home for me. The Nomad in my avatar, along with a '56 for $50.
Another was a '66 Chevy Caprice coupe. 427 car for $15. from a drunk at my class reunion. Or how about a '63 split window with an L-88 for $900. Granted this wasn't last week.....

Here's mine...
I met up with an old girl friend from years back. Had lunch with her, and she tells me she's got a car with a blown motor that they wont let her keep at her apartment complex any longer. She asks me if I'll haul it to the junk yard for her... Sure, I can do that.
So the next monday I hook the car dolly up to my DD and head off to her place. Turns out it's a Honda Civic CRX and it's in very nice condition, which is a super hot car in the "rice" world. Instead of the junk yard, I roll it over to a local garage where the jap-crap guys hang out. A guy there offers me $800.

Ex girlfriend splits it with me, so I got $400 in my pocket for an hours work. While I'm there at the tuners shop, another guy offers me $50 to haul his car 10 miles... What the heck, I can do that. Get to this guys house, and he's got a mopar minivan siting in the drive covered with dust. Turns out he had put a ton of money and work into it, but the motor locked up. A little more wheeling and dealing, and I throw a $100 on top of the tow job, and leave with the minivan.

Stoped to get some lunch, and was looking thru it, found receipts for a fresh rebuilt tranny [2000 miles on it], recent radiator, R&P and both CV joints. Call a friend of mine who has the same year minivan, and he wants it bad. So I sell it to him for $400.

I'm $700 up on the day, and it's not even 2:00 yet!
Then the ex wife calls and asks what I'm doing. I tell her, and a few minutes later she calls back. Her Boyfriend's mother has a car she wants to get rid of. Get the address and go over there. Turns out, it's an '87 Ford tempo with 61k oroginal miles on it. It's got some rust bubbles and It's got a bad overheating problem. I went to pull the radiator cap off of it, and the cap was broken!!! Well, here's your problem I tell her... No, she just wants it gone, she got a new car and just doesn't want anything to do with it anymore....... Are you sure? Yep!

Hit the 'Zone on the way home for a radiator cap and a gallon of antifreeze, and the overheating problem was fixed!

A few days later, I transfered it into my name, and it's been my beater for over a year now.

So basically for a days work, I got $700 and a free low mileage car. Not too bad

driving to work one morning, 47 chevy coupe for sale. Turn around to go look at it, absolutly rust free, new original style interior, no engine or tranny, front clip off the car. Guy comes out of the house, tells me he's moving that day and the car aint going, taking offers on it. So i give him my name and number tell him to call me with the high bid. I start to leave and he says, Hey would you give me $500 for it right now?To say the least, wrote him a check on the spot , went and got my trailer and took her home. Funny thing was i was going to sub-frame it and got a call from a guy restoring a 47, he bought the part of the frame i cut off and the wheels and tires from me for $500.Wish i could do that again!

When I was 12 years old in the summer of 2009, I bought this "redneck" 1980 Ford Pickup for $250. The guy spent all sorts of money putting new parts and gadgets on it to try and get it to run. When we got it home, we poured some gas in it, a quart of oil and rewired the solenoid and put a bracket on it so it wouldn't fall off. Cranked it 3 times and it fired right up!

Back in 1969, I bought a 57 Chevy for $50.00 while in a game of pool at the local watering hole, the next week I got paid $20.00 to haul away a 62 Belair wagon with a broken frame, swapped in the 283 and PG to the 57, gave it a butt ugly paint job only a nineteen year old could do, and sold it for $500.00..........thought I was on top of the world! Love all the stories about the deals we car guys get occasionally.
About 25 years ago I was given a Dodge Dart, the guy said that the timing chain had jumped the gears. Trailered it home, put a fresh battery in it, put the timing mark to T.D.C., it was perfect. I'd had my share of Mopars with bad ballist resistors, $4.50 later, it ran great. Very next day traded it for a cool paint job on a race car.
Last year I was given 2 Chevy vans, one with a bad motor, the runner I cleaned up and sold for 1800. The non runner is a fuel injected 350 with overdrive which I'll fix and throw it in one of my crusty cruisers.
Then there was a free Isuzu Turbo Charged Diesel Trooper with a Bum Transmisson. Bartered my favorite Import Mechanic to replace the transmission and clutch. I drive the crap out of this thing, gets 20 m.p.g. hauls swap meet parts and the dog.

Traded a 1978 460/C6/NP205 engine/transmission/transfer case, straight across, for a nearly complete, but rough 1929 Model AA truck.

The best part, I got the engine/transmission/transfer case for free.

The guy even delivered the AA, and picked up his stuff. Good times.

Not me, but my buddy with the "anti-deal" of the year- in '94, he traded a cherry 68 Barracuda (totally solid, good paint, great interior, great runner) straight up for a 86 Chevy Celebrity because the Celebrity had heat and it was getting close to fall. Moron.

Feb 5 1966 I bought a Triumph TR3 from another soldier. I didn't register it or insure it properly because I was geting out of the cursed army on the 21st of feb. This was at ft jackson so carolina. I got in trouble for having the car on base w/o sticker, got court martialed for disobeying an order to move it { it snowed and no tow truck was available ]
Thw 21st came at long last and I blasted out of So Carlonia heading home to San Diego.
What an adventure, like forest gump and easy rider combined.
After a lot of driving through the south in an english car and treated like a yankee alien the Triumph caught in fire in the middle of nowhere Texas. Some farmer put the fire out with an extinguisher, and a kid of about 16 pulled up in a 56 Cadillac Coupe De Ville. He really wanted that Triumph and I really wanted California so we traded even-steven I drove that car all day and night till I hit the Pacific ocean Home At Last! I didn't have proper paperwork on the Cad, but traded it for a lowered 49 Buick to a crazy car who pushed it off a cliff in Mexico.

When a friend of mine ws first getting into R/C airplanes, he traded straight across a solid '73 Chevy Cheynne Super 10 (less engine/trans.) for an R/C airplane engine that I had. So I made the deal and took the like-new 250 6 cyl and TH 350 from a rust bucket pickup that I was driving and put them in the Cheynne and drove it all over creation for 3 or 4 years before the tranny started slipping and I sold it to get out of doing a trans. swap.

A buddy was working for a plumbing and sheet metal shop in the late seventies when he told me about a 56 ford truck sitting out back of the place and that the owner wanted to clean the all the junk out, so I told him to ask him how much he wanted, a couple days later he said he wants $150 bucks and make it disappear this weekend so I bought this thing sight unseen.....long story short I tuned it up on site, aired the tires up, put a gas can in the back to feed the fuel pump and drove it home 60 miles. Had that thing for years as a beater and eventually sold it for $1800 bucks.

I am well known where I live for crazy impossible deals... here are a few off the top of my head.

I bought a 72 442 for $1 (Canadian LOL) drove it home, had some fun with it, the trunk had been pried open by the previous owner, and it was really rusty, but I enjoyed it, traded it for a pretty nice 82 F150 Lariat with a 400/C6 that I drove for a few months then sold for $1000, took that money and bought tools. Not long after that I cleaned a guys house, mowed his lawn and cataloged his cars for him (he had lots of cars he figured were worth a mint, I checked and it was mostly junk) he paid me in the form of a 1960 Buick LeSabre sedan with a broken rear window and a seized engine... I sold that car for around a grand and got a 37 Ford 1/2 ton panel with crappy fenders but an almost rust free body as a partial trade on it!

I traded a Cheeseburger for a driving 1970 Datsun 510 with the IRS and gave it to my is in law for her first car instead of selling it which would have been easy and profitable. (she's in love with it and when she finishes it wants something from the 30's)

A friend bought a 38 Plymouth sedan for $800, took the clip and the engine and sold it tome for $40 as I needed parts for my 37 Dodge, I sold the car to a TV series as a prop for $150, bought it back from them for $5 at their auction after the series was done, stripped more parts off of it, sold a lot of them, then I sold it and a burnt 38 Dodge sedan to a local hot rodder for $200, he filled them full of parts and they sat at his place for years, he joined a cult and ran out on his family and they eventually had an auction, I bought both cars back for $10 each, took even more parts off of the Plymouth and the Dodge, scrapped the bare remains of the burnt Dodge for $300, sold all the stuff out of the cars that was stuffed in them for a few hundred bucks, stripped the Plymouth totally and skinned most of it for other restorations and hot rods locally, scrapped the hulk for I think $250 (scrap is very low here sadly compared to the US and the cars were full of loose crap scrap) so those 2 cars made me all sorts of money from 1995 till last summer!

Looked at a 79 Lincoln Continental (I wanted a weekend boat) and found one locally with 55 000 miles on it, the owner wanted a grand for it, he was the son of a cop and while I was talking to him I realized we had met before, so I asked him if he remembered trying to steal my bike I was riding when I was 11 and he was 18... suddenly I got the car for $150, with spare skirts and oil and filters, and I got a genuine apology!

I traded a file cabinet I found trashed on the side of the road for a 27 T roadster body at a scrap yard, they even loaded it for me! And I only took the cabinet there because it was a road hazard, I wanted nothing for it!

Got a 64 Fairlane 2 door hard-top with a tube chassis and Nascar style cage for free because I was polite when I asked about it, apparently all the other who looked at it were know it all rude douches.

Got a chopped 48 Dodge sedan for free for helping the lady who had it deal with a$$holes trying to con her out of her cars, she was driving a 67 Firebird and a 60 New Yorker at the time and had about 40 cars in her yard and people kept treating her like like she was an idiot because she is a woman... that pissed me off and I had to step in, I never knew her before that, now we are friends!

I know a couple of these are a little OT, but the stories were worth sharing in my opinion, and if someone still feels the need to whine and cry maybe they should get off the internet.

Looks like I didn't post this in this thread before, but last spring I picked up a 2000 Dodge minivan for $120 - half scrap per a call to the junkyard. Pretty solid, ran, had a rear heater and the metal line behind the motor rotted out. I think I had $20 in some new hose, clamps and anti-freeze, plus a trip to the junkyard to see how the lines were run on ones with only front heat. It ran and drove fine, trans even shifted good. So I cleaned it up and sold it for $1300 like two months later. Guy just wanted it out of his garage so he could park the newer van in there. Guy who bought it was going to combine parts of it with another one that got T-boned - I've no idea which one fixed which one.

Although with gas prices what they are I almost wish I'd kept it now for a beater.

That was the third car I got through that guy, too, I got his '94 Saturn free and sold it for $200 without ever taking it home, then later got his brother's '96 Ford .. some small thing like an Escort but not an Escort... wouldn't pass inspection because of a check engine light because someone put an auto trans car computer in it and it was a 5-speed. Paid $100, sold it on eBay for $600. College kid drove it to Albany and just wanted a parts car for one he had or something.

Come to think of it it's wierd how many late models I've sold to guys who just used them for parts.

I almost had a '56 Olds 4dr hardtop with an SBC cobbed in it in trade for a 55 Willys plow truck I got off a Hamb'er for $500, but my buddy lost the deal he needed a plow for. But I got the truck running, and none of his other deals have come through, so I may still get it here like a year later. I even offered to put brakes on the Willys - they're cheap - other than that it ran, moved and the plow pump worked, although it needed a generator and the throttle linkage is a little goofed up.

Needed a truck one winter. So i found an OT 79 3/4 ton chevy 4wd with a built 454 , the400 205 combo , 35's on wide aluminum slots and a 6 inch lift. Had all new bedsides and doors and fenders with fairly fresh paint . Owner was a little booze hound and had been getting in trouble . Swapped him my new england arms 45-70 govt rifle " $250 dollar gun" and a 1964 or so Johnson seahorse boatmotor that needed rebuilt for the truck

Bought a 50 F1 a little rough and in grey primer with a 307 sbc that didn't run for $500. Went to pick it up, it had an electric fuel pump that died. Cost me $29 at the local parts store, 15 minutes and it was running, drove it home. drove it for 2 years, sold it to one of my sons for $500. He drove it for 2 more years in school. He sold it to a girl for $800. She drove it for about 6-8 months and parked it in the back yard. About 6 months later I stopped and asked about the truck. Said it didn't run. I bought it back again for $100. Checked it out, the fuel pump was bad again. Replaced it and drove it home. Drove the truck another 1 1/2 years. Got bored one weekend and did a quick smooth mud job and painted it Kawasaki Lime green and put a for sale sign in the window. About 4 months later, I sold it for $2500. The truck disappeared off the face of the earth. I haven't seen it since...

I bought a '64 Chevelle SS because the tranny didn't shift. A quart of tranny fluid fixed it.

Probably one of my better deals had to do with an engine that I ultimately stuffed in a '68 plane jane torino. I had built he lower end for a boss 429, the fella took the heads to the local machine shop to be redone. the machinist trippled the quote and gave him 3 days to raise the cash when he went to pic the heads up. The fella told me I could have the entire engine if I got his heads out of hock. He didn't want the machinist to have his heads and I hadn't cheated him on the lower end.

I borrowed money from everyone in town including the baptist minister who loaned me 10 bucks. I ended up with a fresh Boss for less than a grand.

I paid $15 for a 55 Chevy 2-dr BelAir in 1965 because low gear was out on the powerslide trans. Pushed it to get the tranny engaged and drove it home...pink and gray 2-tone.

Some time in 1967 or 1968, my dad made a DUMB trade. He traded a running/driving '40 Packard 110 sedan, a running/driving '47 Packard Clipper sedan, and a running/driving '36 Ford 3/4 ton panel truck for a running/driving '62 Renault Dauphine sedan!!!!!

To be fair, he was running a new small business and the 3 vehicles he traded had issues of one sort or another, but still.....

The best "quick-fix-while-the-PO-watched" story was from Chicago when a fellow Corvair Club member answered an ad for a 1960 Corvair sedan. The stoner-owner said the car would start up and then die right away. He only wanted $75 for it (this was back in the mid '70's). My buddy ponies up the bucks and then pops the engine lid and re-connects the vacuum balance tube to one of the carbs. Instant idle and all the PO can say is, "Far out, man..." Turns out the car was the oldest known surviving Corvair at the time being built only the second day of production! That car is gone now and General Motors changed the design the next year so a leaking vacuum port would not disable the engine.

In 1973 I traded my 5,000 mile Honda 750 K1 four clyinder motorcycle to my college roomate for his 60,000 mile 1970 Chevelle SS 454. His car had the LS6 450 HP engine and the Muncie M22 Rock Crusher 4 speed. It needed a little work like a new flywheel and a starter. The drag headers were leaking and the Mr. Gasket straight-line shifter rattled all the time. But boy did that thing RUN!

I replaced the exhaust and the flywheel and clutch and put a Hurst shifter in the car. I cruised Woodward Avenue with it a few times but no street racing. No, really Officer!

As it does happen Life got in the way and I sold the SS later that year for a whopping $2650. Since I only paid $1400 for the bike I thought I had made the Deal of the Century! Maybe not. Today's prices for a nice K1 Honda 750 are many times my original purchase price. But a numbers matching original LS6 M22 SS 454 has been known to trade for $150k. So much for my deal of the Century! Oops.

Not too much to get excited about but I went to a yard sale last year. Guy has a 95 Mitsubishi Montero for sale, loaded, 4x4 etc. Price is in the window on a large cardboard sign that's kinda wrinkled. Looked like $500 but couldn't tell for sure. I asked and he says $500 because the head gaskets blown, or so he thinks. Ran good. Towed it home and found out it had 5 quarts too much oil in it. Drained it off and the wife's been driving it all winter. Great rig for $500.

in 2000 at 16 years old I traded a 40 Ford 9N tractor in need of restoration and a 80 C10 pickup for TWO 62 Impala Sport Coupes (1 was in fresh paint and all body, chrome and seats redone) and a trailer of 62 Impala parts, an 84 Blazer K5 4X4 and $500 cash. I think I made out pretty well. I took $400 of the trade money and bought a 52 Chevy Styleline deluxe with 37000 orig miles and in original paint with not a speck of rust one week later. In short, I traded a 2,000 truck and a $1,000 tractor for an impala that I later sold for $7,500 a blazer that I later sold for $1,400, a trailer of parts that I made almost $6,000 parting out on eBay the other 62 Impala was rough and was traded to a buddy in exchange for body work, including hanging new 1/4s and door skins on my 69 Chevelle and still have the 52 Chevy

Back in high school I cleaned out a barn for an old woman. When I was done she gave me the 1953 Chevy pickup that was setting in the barn. I had it running within a few hours and drove it just the way it was.

Also painted two rooms in a house for a 1967 Buick special.

Back in high school (1980s) my brother and I tried to purchase nearly every unrestored 1958 Ford in the St Louis area. We knocked on alot of doors and pulled many '58s and '59s from garages and backyards. Usually for $400.00 or less. We got a 30,000 mile tan/white '58 custom 300 sedan from a dude selling it in the paper. We went to the house and he told us it never ran since his son put a battery in it some time in the early 70s. Well, we looked at the car for a minute and we said "well take it!" I handled the title stuff with the owner on the porch and I asked if we could tinker with it for a bit in the driveway and the owner said "Good luck! You aint gonna get that POS to run...you better get a truck and trailer!" We took one look at the battery cables and saw they were installed backwards. We installed some fuses, a fresh battery, distributor/wires and carb we brought with us and poured some gas in the carb and that sucker lit right up! We got it to idle on a gas can under the hood, checked the brakes, and drove that car down the driveway having worked on it for only 45 minutes! The owner came out pissed as hell and started calling us crooks and shit. I reminded him my name was on the title now and that I didn't care about his lack of car knowledge. He had some more choice words for us as we drove away with our new prize!!!

We got countless cars the same way and flipped them real quick. In the 80s we got a red 30,000 mile '69 1/2 Maverick 6cyl once on a Friday for free (took it home on a wrecker) and drove it back to the former owner cleaned, polished and running perfectly the very next day. She told us the car was her college driver and was just parked for many years and her husband and son tried for years to get it running. Her husband was pissed when we brought that one back........

I just bought a '32 Studebaker Rockne sedan in big chunks out of a you-pull it yard - the hood one day, the cowl and doors a week later, today the back half of the body and some pieces. Missed the grille but I have a line on who does have it. Who the fuck junks a car there's only 200 of known to exist - between two years, three models, and umpteen body styles?

Traded a 10 year old 18' car hauler for a 98 dodge diesel truck that needed an IP. Put the pump on, replaced the trailer, and made $4k.

Back in the 50's I traded a home made go-cart for a full blown Road racing 55 Austin Healey and all related extra parts. Owner had been in a street wreck and lost an eye, end of racing career, wanted the go-cart for his son. Made the Healey streetable, drove it for about 4 years and sold it to a Austin Healey restorer for $900.00. A bunch of money in the 50's.

About a month ago I had a quad I didnt ride anymore listed locally for $3000.
I had paid $1800 for it and had dumped about $600 worth of parts on it.
The quad had a good bit of motor work done to it by the previous owner.

I put in the ad that I would consider a hot rod project as trade.
I must have gotten 200 calls from guys with 80's Camaros and all other sorts of crap.
After a week I got a call from a guy 80 miles away who said he had a 38 Chevy truck project.
I drove out with the quad in the trailer to check it out.
It looked pretty good so we did the trade.

The old guy wasnt much of a car guy it seemed and had the truck in his garage for 15 years.
He bought it already built and took it completly apart to make it pretty. He spent a ton of money just to realize he didnt know what he was doing apparently.

When I added up all of the receipts he had it came out to a little over $24,000...
