I wanted some exhaust baffles for the tapered tube lake style headers but could not find anyone that made them. So being the tightass that I am, I decided to make some. Here is the header in question, homemade with crappy speedway megaphones.

I stopped on my way home from work today and picked up some big washers from Fastenal for about $6. The smaller ones are 3" OD and 1.25" ID and the bigger ones are 3.5" OD and 1.5625" ID. The tubing is some scrap 1.5" exhaust tubing I had laying around.

The first thing I did was slid the small washer in the end of the header.

Then I measured from the washer to the end of the megaphone and decided to cut my exhaust tubing at 7.5"

After cutting my tubing I put it in the vise and used my air hammer to fill it full of holes. I started with a hammer and punch and switched to the airhammer cause it was faster.

I then laid out some lines on my washers for holes so there is not to much backpressure. Nothing fancy here, just laid a ruler acrossed them and drew some guidelines

I then drilled the hole via drillpress. .3125" in the big washers and .25" in the small ones.

These are the parts you should have at this time to do one side
    [IMG]

Next I welded the pipe to the little washer.

Then inserted it into the megaphone.

I then slid the large washer over the exhaust pipe and welded it to the end. For some reason I didn't take a picture of this process but here is what it looked like when welded.

Next I welded a tab on the large washer for secureing it to the megaphone. You never know when you'll want to pop them out and shake the neighbors windows.

After the tab was welded on I put the baffle back in the megaphone and drilla hole through the megaphone and tab. I then remove the baffle and welded a nut on back of the tab. reinserted the baffle and secured it with a bolt.(the flange that I had tackwelded on broke off during this process that is why it is missing)

At this time I had one side pretty much complete and mounted it back on the engine.

Here it is with the flange back on.

Thats about it I don't have the engine fired up so I can't tell how it sounds but it has to quite it down a little. I still have to get two more flanges and a couple turnout and they will be done.It only took me a couple hours to do(with stopping to take pics) and about $10 worth of materials. Thanks for looking!!!........Mike

Those are tits, man!! Looks good. Take steel wool or fiberglass(like the kind in aftermarket mufflers) and wrap those tubes you made in it, it will quiet it down some more. I dont know if thats what you want, but there it is.

great idea! you did better than me.

thats sorta what i did with mine. except the outside flange on my headers is round, instead of triangular like yours. i just welded my baffles directly onto the plate that is to be used to cover the end. with a hole drilled in it of course.

it sounds great, real throaty. only thing that sucks, and maybe im being a pussy, all of that exhaust comes into the car. starts to suck after a while.

  21. That's Cool...!!!

And for the people running Zoomies..., all you'd need are the punched tubes or a threaded rod with the Large Star washers on it dropped into each tube and held in there with a pin or a bolt...!;)

I built a similar set of baffles and used a coarse steel wool wrap, as suggested. It went from YELLING over the engine in the shop to being able to hear another person. Quite acceptable sound level.....by my standards anyway.

You did a great job on yours.

  23. Very cool, great idea. Let us know how much of a diff it makes.

Now you will want to add one more washer inside the tube of your baffle. It can have holes, too.

You did yourself proud MP33. Very cool.

~PS~ RYAN- This is something I asked in another thread, but does MP33 have to save these pics in his PhotoBucket album for ever and ever and ever....?
