To say that you would just slap truck hubs on the original spindles would be an over simplification, since stronger steering knuckles, wheel hubs and brake drums were usually replaced at the same time, for greater durability, as the guide so aptly puts it. No doubt there were some local racers that adapted whatever they had at hand to build a car that would take the same abuse however.
Thanks for the explanation John , that's why I love the HAMB.
Great thread BTW.

IIRC the guy in the infield is Wally Mezkowski. Can't remember who is in the car.

Note to "kids" or anyone. Take lots of photos and tuck them away. Even right now. They are almost free today and it's neat to look back after even a couple of years. For whatever reason I have always done that and can see where I've been.
The trees in your yard that never seem to grow leap before your eyes. The wife still stops traffic if I check the older photos. And on and on.
Uhhh, no pictures on the couch watching TV--we should either be turning wrenches, helping others or youngsters turn wrenches or tacking on the miles.

Damn straight! There is not a photo in existence of me from the time I left home to the time I left the Army (A few from recruit training, so.... I lied.) I wish I had some of the shit I did on film. These days I point out, I have done that to something on a movie and everyone goes 'Yeah sure!'.
Jumping out of an airplane on oxygen above.................well bloody high! That view on the ramp as the globe curves away, far above cloud level, awesome!
I have pictures of the cars I have owned but none with me in them and again no one believes they were mine! Fuckem.

Take pictures, with you in them. Fuck op-sec.

Doc.

And the Lodestar is a conversion of surplus Hudson's, production did continue post WWII as the Lodestar but the simple fact is, they came from the Hudson.
Somewhat like the A.V.Roe Lancastrian , a converted Lancaster. They even completed a number of uncompleted Lancaster's still one the workshop floor at the cessation of hostility's to civil airliners.

Doc.

EDIT!! OK, I was wrong, the Hudson was variant of the Lockheed Superelectra 14. The Hudson was made for the RAF for maritime recon work.
I learned something, the Hudson came about because the airline that had ordered the Superelectras returned them due to the type crashing too often!! So what do you do? Yup, give it to the Military, those dumb shits wont know!.

Yeah, there were some pix on here a month or so ago of Gable & Stanwyck at INDY at the time they were doing the movie. The back-story on the "four birds" gag shot is an hilarious, true piece of racing history -- even if on the ODD side! LOL. THANKS all for putting all the pieces together!

Thanks, CalCoy for adding facts about Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. A little-known fact is that Bobby was a great baseball player. He turned down a major-league contract to stay with his music career!
