We've all heard that old saying: "A man's work is from sun to sun, but
a woman's work is never done." Right? The "recipe" below is the best
proof I've seen that this was certainly true in the Old Days. I saved this,
because you just have to read it verbatim to appreciate it. Many years
ago, I was told, an Alabama grandmother gave this to a new bride, os-
tensibly to make the young woman's married life a tad easier by sharing
her own experience. This is said to be an exact copy, as written and
found in an old scrapbook -- spelling errors and all.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WARSHING CLOTHES
Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert.
Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.
Sort things, make 3 piles
1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.
To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.
Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.
Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.
Hang old rags on fence.
Spread tea towels on grass.
Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water.
Turn tubs upside down.
Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.
Washing clothes in Utah, 1902.
This photo pretty much speaks for itself.
'30s shot of a lady doing the laundry with a state-of-the art washer,
complete with self-contained washboard AND wringer!
Down on the farm, USA 1910. Looks as though hi-tech didn't necessarily
make wash day a snap! Anybody wanna fill us in on the contraption???
I can't imagine why these two ladies are smiling, except maybe that's human
nature when somebody points a camera at you?
What a life! Modern tech makes laundry
a sit-down job? Better living through science,
I guess!
