Those Nash pictures from page 1086 bring back childhood memories for me. My parents bought three new Nashes...1950, 51, and 53. We had a boat so we always went fishing and camping. There was no need for a tent as the Nash seats laid down making a bed. Here is a picture of me at age 5 in the summer of 1953 next to our new Nash.

"While working for Sopwith after WWI, Harry Hawker, Australian pilot and aircraft designer, used his Sunbeam-Mercedes for fast transportation. He had to lengthen the Mercedes chassis by 10 inches in order to accommodate the 225hp Sunbeam V-12 aero engine."

Diagrammatic section of the Gobron engine
The opposed-piston engine used in Gobron-Brillié cars.
Unusually for an opposed piston engine, there was only a single crankshaft. The lower pistons were driven conventionally, the upper pistons were driven by long connecting rods to a yoke above them.
As for other engines of the period, it used petrol (gasoline) as a fuel, although this was unusual for an opposed-piston, or a cylinder-ported four-stroke engine.

A Variable Stroke Engine
A piston engine (gasoline) with a stroke that may be adjusted whilst the engine is running. The crankshaft stroke remains constant, but an adjustable linkage between this and the piston connecting rod allows adjustment
